A zero-dependency watchdog is a custom script, not a documented Freqtrade feature; use one only when you understand exactly what it checks and how it behaves after failures. For Docker deployments, Freqtrade’s documented sd_notify-to-systemd path does not work inside the container.
What “running 24/7” requires
A supervisor can start a process, notice certain failures, and attempt a restart. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted trading, exchange connectivity, correct configuration, or safe recovery from every failure. Choose based on the deployment and the health signal you need—not on an assumption that a watchdog makes the bot infallible.

Freqtrade’s installation guide lists Docker and a terminal multiplexer as ways to avoid stopping the bot when you log out, and presents systemd as an optional Linux post-installation task. Set up Freqtrade as a systemd user service

Copy the project’s

Edit the unit’s
WorkingDirectoryandExecStartvalues to match your installation and the command you actually use to launch Freqtrade. Check the example against the Freqtrade version you deploy. -
Start the service with
systemctl --user start freqtrade. Check the unit’s status and logs before relying on it; a supervisor will not correct an invalid path, command, or configuration.Rank #2

To keep a user service running after logout, enable linger for your user:

For application-aware watchdog notifications, enable internals.sd_notify in the Freqtrade configuration or use the --sd-notify command-line option, then configure the project’s freqtrade.service.watchdog example. The documented notifications include keep-alive pings and the bot states Running, Paused, and Stopped. Follow the unit and configuration details for your deployed version. What a zero-dependency watchdog must define
“Zero dependency” describes an implementation choice, not a Freqtrade option with documented behavior. Before using a custom script, specify its behavior rather than relying on the label:
- Health check: Does it test only whether a process exists, whether the application responds, or another explicit signal? Process presence alone does not establish that Freqtrade is working correctly.
- Polling interval: How often does it check, and what delay before detection is acceptable?
- Restart policy: What exactly gets restarted, how are signals handled, and how does the script prevent duplicate bot instances?
- Repeated failures: Does it impose a retry limit or backoff, and what happens when the same failure recurs? Repeatedly restarting a bot with a bad configuration can create a loop instead of fixing the cause.
- Logging and alerts: Where are checks and restart attempts recorded, and how will an operator learn that the process keeps failing?
- Persistence: What starts the watchdog after logout or host reboot? A script running in a terminal does not automatically survive either event.
Unless the specific implementation demonstrates otherwise, do not assume a simple loop can detect a hung application, shut it down cleanly, avoid duplicate instances, survive reboot, or identify exchange-side problems.

Docker changes the choice
Docker is a supported Freqtrade installation option, but the project explicitly warns that Freqtrade’s sd_notify communication with systemd will not work when the bot runs in a Docker container. Docker can still be used to keep the bot running; that does not make the documented Freqtrade-to-systemd notification path available inside the container. Restarts and trading state are different concerns
Freqtrade’s advanced setup guide says its SQLite database records information such as past trades and current positions, helping the bot track ongoing activity if the process restarts or terminates unexpectedly. That is state persistence, not proof that every operational failure or in-flight operation will recover safely. Which approach should you choose?
- Direct Linux install, standard service management: Start with the documented systemd user service, configure the actual paths and command, and enable linger if it must continue after logout.
- Direct Linux install, Freqtrade-aware monitoring: Use the systemd watchdog example with
sd_notifyenabled, and verify the example against your deployed version. - Docker deployment: Do not expect the documented in-container
sd_notify-to-systemd communication to work. Use a supervision arrangement that fits the container deployment. - Custom watchdog: Choose it only if its health check, restart conditions, failure limits, logging, and startup persistence are explicit and maintainable.
There is no official head-to-head uptime figure establishing one method as more reliable. The practical decision is whether you need systemd’s service management and Freqtrade’s documented state notifications, or whether a custom, deliberately limited check is sufficient for your deployment.
