KDE Connect vs. GSConnect: Which Should You Use on Linux?

GNOME users should generally pair GSConnect on the desktop with the KDE Connect Android app. Here’s how it compares with KDE Connect on other Linux desktops.

On GNOME, use GSConnect on the desktop and the KDE Connect app on your Android phone. On KDE Plasma or another supported Linux desktop, use the KDE Connect desktop application. GSConnect implements KDE Connect functionality inside GNOME Shell; it is an alternative desktop implementation, not an add-on to run alongside the KDE Connect desktop app.

What is the difference between KDE Connect and GSConnect?

KDE Connect is the broader project and protocol for linking phones and computers. Its official download page lists desktop and mobile clients, including a Linux desktop app and an Android app. It says the Linux version works across desktop environments and points GNOME users to GSConnect as an alternative.

GSConnect is a GNOME Shell extension that brings KDE Connect functionality into GNOME. Its GNOME Extensions listing highlights integration with GNOME Shell, Nautilus, Chrome, and Firefox. In practical terms, the choice on GNOME is between GSConnect’s GNOME integration and the KDE Connect desktop application—not running both desktop implementations together.

Which one should you choose?

Your desktop or priority Recommended desktop implementation Why
GNOME Shell GSConnect It integrates KDE Connect functionality with GNOME Shell. Its official listing says it will not work if the KDE Connect desktop application is installed.
KDE Plasma KDE Connect KDE Connect is the direct desktop app for Plasma.
Another Linux desktop KDE Connect is the general starting point The KDE Connect download page says its Linux version works on all desktop environments. Check your distribution and desktop setup for any particular integration requirements.

For either desktop option, the Android companion is KDE Connect. You do not need a separate GSConnect phone app.

Do the features match?

The projects describe overlapping phone-to-desktop functions, but their feature lists do not establish exact one-to-one parity across every desktop, app version, or phone configuration. Choose based on the tasks you need rather than assuming that every feature behaves identically.

Capability What the project documentation describes
Files, links, and text GSConnect documents sharing files, links, and text. KDE Connect describes secure file sharing.
Notifications and clipboard GSConnect documents notification and clipboard synchronization. KDE Connect describes secure notification sharing.
Messaging GSConnect documents sending and receiving messages; KDE Connect describes SMS messaging.
Media and remote control GSConnect documents media-player and system-volume control. KDE Connect describes remote-control features.
Contacts and commands GSConnect documents contact synchronization and running predefined commands. The cited KDE Connect listing does not establish equivalent details for these functions.

Some functions depend on phone permissions or optional desktop integrations. GSConnect’s installation documentation identifies additional software as optional for certain integrations.

How to connect an Android phone to GNOME

  1. Check GNOME Shell compatibility. Compare your installed GNOME Shell version with the current GSConnect listing. It currently marks GSConnect 73, 72, and 71 active for GNOME Shell versions 46–51, 46–50, and 46–49 respectively; version 70 for Shell 45; and version 69 for Shell 43. This is a live compatibility listing, so check it again before installing.
  2. Install and enable GSConnect. Use the GNOME Shell Extensions listing and enable the extension in GNOME.
  3. Install KDE Connect on Android. The KDE Connect download page lists Google Play, Huawei AppGallery, and F-Droid as Android distribution options.
  4. Put both devices on the same network, then pair them. Open the relevant KDE Connect or GSConnect controls on each device and complete the pairing prompt.
  5. Allow only the features you intend to use. Grant the Android permissions needed for functions such as notifications, messaging, or contacts, and install optional desktop components only if an integration you want requires them.

Why can’t GSConnect find your phone?

Start with network discovery. GSConnect’s help documentation identifies TCP and UDP ports 1716–1764 and UDP broadcasts as requirements for KDE Connect protocol communication and automatic discovery. Firewall rules, network routing, or a VPN can prevent devices from seeing one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm both devices are connected to the same local network.
  • Check that firewall rules permit the required TCP and UDP traffic on ports 1716–1764, including UDP broadcasts for discovery.
  • Check whether a VPN or network configuration is separating the devices or blocking local broadcasts.
  • On GNOME, confirm GSConnect is enabled and that the KDE Connect desktop application is not installed alongside it.

What does GSConnect’s maintenance status mean?

The GSConnect project repository says development has shifted from a developer-driven model to a community-driven one, with no dedicated developers working on new features or bug fixes. The project relies on contributions from users and distributions that package it. That status is a maintenance consideration, not proof that the extension is unreliable; weigh it if dedicated ongoing development is important to you.

Is one faster or more reliable?

The cited project documentation does not provide controlled performance tests that rank KDE Connect and GSConnect for speed or reliability. The evidence supports choosing by desktop integration, GNOME Shell compatibility, needed features, setup and network constraints, and maintenance expectations—not by an unsupported benchmark claim.
