You can install the server directly on a Linux machine or use it as part of Kasm Workspaces. It is not a standard RFB VNC server, so compatibility with legacy VNC clients should not be assumed.
What KasmVNC does—and what it does not do
Kasm Technologies describes KasmVNC as Linux desktop streaming software. A server runs a desktop session or application, then delivers its display and input controls through a browser. The project is used by open-source Kasm Workspaces container images, but it can also be installed directly on a server; Kasm Workspaces is the broader containerized streaming platform, not another name for the standalone server component. KasmVNC does not follow the Remote Framebuffer (RFB) specification used by conventional VNC implementations. Its browser client is the intended access method; do not assume that a traditional VNC viewer can connect to it. KasmVNC configuration documentation and the KasmVNC repository

Server requirements
The KasmVNC 1.5.0 installation guide lists 2 CPU cores and 2 GB of RAM as a server baseline. That is a minimum starting point in the documentation, not a guarantee of smooth performance for every desktop, application, or number of users. The same guide lists amd64 and arm64 packages for these distributions and releases:

Client requirements and browser support
The client guidance is from KasmVNC documentation version 1.4.0, so check the documentation for your installed release. It prefers Chromium-based browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Chromium. Firefox is supported with some features unavailable. Direct connections from Safari are unsupported in the documented setup because Safari does not pass the required Basic Authentication credentials through WebSocket connections. The client guide recommends 4 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM for the device running the browser; lower-resource devices may work, but this is a different figure from the server baseline. How installation and access work
The official Debian, Ubuntu, and Kali installation outline is to download the package for the matching distribution from the KasmVNC release assets, install it with apt, add the operating-system user to the required certificate group, reconnect so the group change applies, and start vncserver. On first launch, the operator is prompted to create a KasmVNC user and select a desktop environment. The guide also documents optional systemd user services for starting sessions at boot and running multiple display IDs. Follow the release-matched instructions rather than treating this outline as a substitute for distribution-specific package steps. KasmVNC 1.5.0 installation guide

There are two distinct user identities involved. The Linux operating-system user starts and owns the desktop process; KasmVNC credentials and permissions determine what browser users may do in that session. A KasmVNC account is not a replacement for deciding which Linux account should run the desktop. KasmVNC server security documentation
Permissions, authentication, and network exposure
KasmVNC documents HTTPS Basic Authentication and uses a web server with desktop rendering transmitted over WebSockets by default. Its permissions distinguish viewing a session from controlling it and from using developer API calls:
Rank #4
- Read: view the rendered session without keyboard or cursor input.
- Write: interact with and control the session, subject to server configuration.
- Owner: access developer API calls. Owner permission does not automatically include read or write access.
Those permissions govern access inside the application; they do not by themselves decide how a server is exposed on a network. Restrict who can reach the service, use appropriate network controls, and grant only the session permissions each user needs. The vendor overview mentions built-in data-loss-prevention features and routine penetration testing, but that characterization is not an independent audit report or a guarantee that a particular deployment is secure. WebRTC and NAT
WebRTC over UDP is documented as experimental, not a universal replacement for the default WebSocket transport. KasmVNC documentation says TURN servers are not supported; STUN is supported for address discovery, and static NAT may work without TURN. If users connect from behind NAT, confirm that the documented network conditions match your setup before relying on WebRTC. KasmVNC server security documentation

Performance, video encoding, and configuration
KasmVNC 1.5.0 documents FFmpeg-based video encoding through software options and optional hardware acceleration using VAAPI or NVIDIA NVENC. The listed codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The guide characterizes H.264 as broadly supported by modern browsers, H.265 as more bandwidth-efficient at comparable quality, and AV1 support as more variable across browsers and GPUs. These are vendor documentation statements, not independent performance measurements; actual latency and image quality depend on hardware, drivers, codecs, client, and configuration. Test client compatibility before requiring AV1 as the only allowed codec. KasmVNC 1.5.0 video streaming guide
In automatic mode, the documented behavior is to probe encoders, choose an option supported by both the server and client, prefer hardware encoding when available, and fall back to software encoding if hardware acceleration is unavailable. KasmVNC settings are YAML-based: system-wide settings are in /etc/kasmvnc/kasmvnc.yaml, with user overrides under ~/.vnc/kasmvnc.yaml. Some settings can be overridden by environment variables when enabled; array settings have caveats and may replace existing values. Use the configuration reference for the version you run before changing transport, authentication, or encoding settings. KasmVNC 1.5.0 video streaming guide and KasmVNC configuration documentation
Choosing a host and deciding whether it fits
For self-hosting, the host can be a Linux computer you already administer or a Linux mini PC used as an always-on server. Match its CPU, memory, architecture, supported distribution, storage, and network connection to the desktop workload; the documented baseline alone does not establish that any particular small computer will perform well. A Linux VPS or other hosted Linux server is another possible route, but it must provide a supported environment, sufficient assigned compute, and network reachability that fits your security and administration needs. The documentation does not establish a universally suitable host or provider.
KasmVNC is a reasonable fit when you want Linux applications or a desktop delivered through a browser and can administer the Linux host and its access controls. Before deployment, decide whether direct installation or Kasm Workspaces suits your setup, which browsers your users have, whether users need view-only or interactive access, how the server will be reached through your network, and whether your workload and clients support the encoding configuration you intend to use.
