A Kasa switch can still turn its connected circuit on or off at the wall when the internet is down, and TP-Link says device-loaded timers and schedules continue to run. Remote control from away from home and Kasa voice-assistant integrations depend on the device being online.
What works when the internet is down?
Using the wall switch
A Kasa wall switch remains a physical switch: operating it at the wall controls its connected circuit, assuming the switch has electrical power and is functioning. This is separate from using the Kasa app or other smart features.

Timers and schedules
TP-Link says Kasa Timer and Schedule functions are loaded locally on the device, so they continue during an internet outage. That statement applies to those functions; it does not establish that every Kasa app feature works offline. TP-Link’s Kasa FAQ also notes a useful distinction: manually or app-triggered on/off actions can stop a Timer, while a Schedule continues.

What needs an internet connection?
Remote control from outside the home
Controlling a Kasa switch while away requires the device to be set up and connected to the internet. TP-Link describes the HS200 as controllable through the Kasa app from anywhere and specifies a secure home Wi-Fi connection for that model. TP-Link’s HS200 product information is model-specific; check the page for your switch rather than assuming every Kasa model has identical requirements.

Voice assistants
TP-Link describes Kasa voice-assistant integration as cloud-to-cloud and says the devices must be online. Do not count on voice commands working through a home internet outage based on that integration. Supported assistants can vary by switch model, so confirm compatibility for the exact model in its documentation.
App control while at home
Local schedules running on the device do not prove that app control will work without internet. The available TP-Link guidance confirms offline operation for timers and schedules, but does not establish a universal offline-app capability across Kasa switches. If the app cannot reach the switch during an outage, use the wall control or let an already-loaded schedule run.

Does setup require internet?
TP-Link’s setup guidance calls for the Kasa app, a TP-Link cloud account, and a connection to home Wi-Fi. Some models use Bluetooth Low Energy during setup, but that does not mean they can be set up without the account and Wi-Fi requirements described for the supported devices. The BLE instructions cover a defined list of models and note that features and availability can vary by hardware revision and region. Check TP-Link’s BLE setup guide and the support page for your exact model.
What to check for your particular switch
- Find the full model number and hardware revision on the switch or its documentation.
- Check its support page for Wi-Fi, wiring, electrical, setup, and voice-assistant requirements; the HS200 is one example, not a stand-in for every Kasa switch.
- Distinguish a Timer from a Schedule if behavior changes during an outage. TP-Link says a manual or app-triggered action can stop a Timer, whereas a Schedule continues.
- For remote-control problems, confirm that the switch and home internet connection are online. TP-Link’s remote-control troubleshooting guidance addresses that connection dependency.
For example, if a scheduled light still changes state during an outage but the app cannot control it remotely, that matches the different dependencies TP-Link documents: schedules are loaded locally, while remote control requires an internet-connected device.
