Karnataka is exploring AI training for government-school students from Class 6, but the state has not announced a rollout. A 5 October 2026 report says Chief Minister D K Shivakumar directed officials to examine extending training already reported for Class 9 students. It does not give a launch date, syllabus or confirmed delivery partner.
What Karnataka has announced
The reported instruction is to explore “extending it to students from Class 6,” with support from the state Information Technology department and private partners. That is a planning direction, not confirmation that Class 6 training has begun or that a rollout has been approved. ThePrint’s PTI report, published 5 October 2026, says AI training had already started for Class 9 students in government schools. It does not state when that training began, how many schools or students are involved, or what the programme teaches.

What is known—and what is not
- Class 6: Officials were asked to explore extending AI training to this grade; no start date or confirmed rollout is reported.
- Class 9: The report says training in government schools has started, but provides no syllabus, scale or results.
- Google: The company is reported to have expressed interest in providing AI training. Officials were asked to examine its initiatives in Telangana. No Karnataka partnership, agreement or terms are confirmed.
- Equipment and funding: The report does not announce a budget, device purchases, school list or laboratory plan.
In particular, Google’s reported interest should not be read as a finalized partnership. The report also does not establish whether any future programme would use Google materials or how the state would oversee delivery.
How this relates to the national curriculum
Separately, the Ministry of Education says NCERT, in collaboration with CBSE, introduced a Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence curriculum for Classes III to VIII from academic year 2026–27. The ministry’s 5 August 2026 release describes the national curriculum, but the Karnataka report does not say the state will adopt it. The existence of this curriculum therefore does not confirm what Class 6 students in Karnataka will study.
#1 Best Overall
The same ministry release says establishing AI and robotics laboratories in government schools is the responsibility of the respective state or union territory governments. Karnataka has not announced a lab or equipment procurement plan as part of the reported Class 6 proposal.

Rank #2
- What topics and grade progression the Class 6 syllabus would cover;
- when instruction might begin, and which schools or districts might take part;
- how many teaching hours students would receive and in what languages;
- how teachers would be prepared and whether instruction would be classroom-based or require devices and connectivity;
- how student learning would be assessed;
- what the programme would cost, and whether Google or another partner would participate.
These details will determine whether the proposal becomes a practical classroom programme, rather than remaining an exploration of expansion.
