Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor one Kannada novel, dense vector search returned the wrong chapter when asked, “What does Himavant say on page 120?” The author’s reported fix was to combine dense retrieval with BM25 using Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF), while routing explicit page-number questions directly to page metadata. That is a useful case study—not proof that hybrid search solves Kannada retrieval generally.
What went wrong with dense-only search?
Amruth Kumar M describes building a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system over a scanned 346-page physical copy of Ravi Belagere’s Kannada novel Heli Hogu Kaarana. In the reported page-120 example, a dense-only pipeline surfaced a passage from the wrong chapter. The author says exact names and rare colloquialisms also exposed weaknesses, and describes multilingual embeddings as inconsistent with inflected Kannada names. Those are observations from this implementation, not a finding about every multilingual embedding model.

Dense retrieval represents text and queries as vectors, so it can find passages related by meaning even when wording differs. That helps with paraphrases and thematic questions, but does not guarantee that a specific name, rare expression, or page reference will rank correctly. As the author put it about this example, “The difference was entirely in retrieval architecture.”

Why combine dense retrieval with BM25?
BM25 ranks text by lexical overlap, giving the system another route to retrieve passages containing the terms a reader actually used. In this project, the author reports dense retrieval as more useful for paraphrase and thematic queries, while BM25 helped with exact names and rare terms. Neither method alone covered both query types reliably in the reported experience.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
BM25’s surface matching has an important Kannada limitation: it does not automatically treat grammatical variants as the same word. The author notes that forms such as ಹಿಮವಂತನ and ಹಿಮವಂತ are distinct tokens unless stemming or another morphological strategy is added. Lexical retrieval can therefore complement semantic matching without solving morphology by itself.
How RRF merges the rankings
The system combined the dense and BM25 result lists with Reciprocal Rank Fusion, using k=60. RRF aggregates rank positions rather than adding the systems’ raw scores, which may use incompatible scales. The merged candidates were then narrowed and reranked with mmarco-mMiniLMv2-L12-H384-v1. That extra ranking stage adds work, but lets the system reorder a smaller candidate set after the two retrieval methods have contributed results.

Why page questions used a separate route
“What does Himavant say on page 120?” is not only a semantic question; it contains an explicit page reference. Instead of asking semantic retrieval to infer which chunk belongs to page 120, the system used a regular-expression route to look up page metadata. The author reports 100% precision for this route, conditional on the OCR text and page metadata being correct. It is a result for this project’s route, not a general guarantee for page-based RAG.
Separating this query class makes the source of an answer easier to control: the page number selects the material, while retrieval and generation can handle the passage content. If a scan is misread or a chunk is assigned incorrect page metadata, the lookup can still return the wrong evidence. Page-level citations are only as reliable as that underlying provenance.

How the scanned book became searchable
The author reports a preprocessing pipeline designed to preserve text and page provenance:
- Render each PDF page at 300 DPI.
- Apply OpenCV denoising and thresholding to prepare scanned pages.
- Use Surya OCR for Kannada text recognition.
- Normalize Unicode and clean up ligatures with Indic NLP.
- Semantically chunk the text and attach page metadata.
Those steps matter to retrieval, not just document preparation. OCR errors can change names or colloquial forms, and normalization cannot restore text that was not recognized. The author identifies OCR quality as a constraint on trustworthy provenance and page citations.

What the reported evaluation does—and does not—show
Amruth Kumar M reports testing a 50-query golden set as a regression suite. The article gives the following project metrics:
| Measure | Author-reported result |
|---|---|
| Faithfulness | 0.92 |
| Answer relevancy | 0.88 |
| Context recall | 0.89 |
| Context precision | 0.85 |
These figures describe that author’s system and evaluation set; the article explicitly does not claim statistical power. The fallback model tiers were spot-checked rather than benchmarked, so their quality trade-off is not quantified as a comparative result. The report also does not provide independently reproduced metrics or an independent audit of the dataset.

Latency and deployment trade-offs
The author reports warm-path end-to-end latency of P50 2.8 seconds and P95 5.0 seconds. The exact-page route is reported at approximately 5–12 milliseconds, while a serverless cold start adds approximately 1–2 seconds. These are project-reported figures, not expected timings for another deployment. The system used local ChromaDB for retrieval; the author identifies cold-start behavior as an operational issue in serverless environments and ephemeral feedback storage as another limitation.
Reranking adds processing after retrieval, and the wider system also includes model-generation and optional text-to-speech calls. The latency figures are useful context for this particular stack, but should not be read as an isolated measurement of the cost of RRF or as a direct comparison with a different hosting setup.
What to take from this case study
The reported design separates query types instead of forcing every question through one retrieval method: dense search helps with semantic similarity, BM25 contributes exact surface matches, RRF merges their rankings, and explicit page references use metadata lookup. A confidence threshold can refuse an answer when grounding is weak. Whether the same choices work elsewhere depends on the language, text quality, query mix, and evaluation method.
