There is no universally best choice. Use Scrum when your team wants a defined framework, a shared Sprint Goal and recurring opportunities to inspect and adapt. Use Kanban when the priority is making work visible and improving its flow through pull and work-in-progress limits. Choose Scrumban only after agreeing what that locally defined hybrid means in practice. A Scrum team can also add Kanban practices without changing Scrum.
What each approach means
Scrum is a defined framework
The official Scrum Guide describes Scrum through accountabilities, events, artifacts and rules. Scrum is not simply a task board or a generic practice of planning work in sprints. The current official English version listed by Scrum Guides is from November 2020.

Kanban is a strategy for managing flow
Scrum.org defines Kanban as a strategy for optimizing the flow of value through a process using a visual, work-in-progress-limited pull system. A board can make work visible, but a board alone is not the whole approach: WIP limits and pull are also part of the definition.
Scrumban is a locally defined hybrid
Scrumban does not have one universally binding definition in the cited sources. Corey Ladas’s writing presents Scrum/Kanban hybrids as a way for Scrum users to explore Kanban ideas, but teams use the label differently. If a team says it uses Scrumban, it should specify its cadence, accountabilities, work-selection rules and Kanban flow practices rather than assume everyone means the same thing.

How to choose
| Team need | Approach to consider | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| A defined framework, shared Sprint Goal and recurring inspection and adaptation | Scrum | Whether the team can work within Scrum’s framework elements and Sprint structure. |
| Visible work, active management of work in progress and a pull-based flow | Kanban | How the team will visualize work, set WIP limits and decide when to pull new work. |
| Scrum’s framework plus a stronger focus on flow | Scrum with Kanban | Keep Scrum intact and identify the Kanban practices being added. Scrum.org explicitly describes Kanban practices as compatible with Scrum. |
| A tailored combination of Scrum and Kanban ideas | Scrumban | Write down what is retained from Scrum and what flow practices are used; the label alone does not establish a standard process. |
Consider how work arrives and changes
Ask whether the team is organizing work toward a goal over a bounded period or handling work that arrives continuously and needs ongoing reprioritization. This is a decision prompt, not a universal rule that one approach handles every kind of change better.
Consider the feedback and flow the team needs
Scrum provides recurring events and a Sprint structure for inspection and adaptation. Kanban emphasizes seeing and managing flow with visualization, WIP limits and pull. A Scrum team that wants better flow visibility can add Kanban practices while remaining a Scrum team.
Consider how much shared structure is needed
Scrum’s defined framework offers shared expectations about its elements. A team choosing Scrumban should document its own agreements so members and stakeholders know how work is selected, managed and reviewed. Neither a board nor a tool subscription is a requirement established by these definitions.

What not to assume
- Do not treat a Scrum board or sprint planning alone as Scrum; Scrum is a framework with defined elements.
- Do not equate a Kanban board with the full Kanban approach described here; the definition includes WIP limits and pull.
- Do not assume Scrumban has one standard set of accountabilities, events or policies. Ask what a particular team means by it.
- Do not choose based on unverified claims that one method is faster, more productive, more predictable or more successful. The cited sources do not provide a head-to-head comparative result.
