1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTest browser compatibility and responsive behavior as separate parts of one plan: automate stable, important user journeys across the browser engines you support, then check your site’s layout at meaningful screen widths and validate issues in actual target environments when emulation is not enough. There is no universal browser-and-device matrix; build yours around your users, supported environments, and the risks of your site’s key tasks.
Choose what you need to test
“How do I test my website on different browsers?” and “How do I test a website on mobile devices?” involve related but distinct questions. Cross-browser testing checks whether browser and engine differences affect behavior. Responsive testing checks whether the interface remains usable across screen sizes and orientations. A page can work in several browsers but break at a narrow width, or look right at a given width while behaving differently in one browser. Plan for both axes.

Start by writing down the environments your site intends to support, informed by audience data and business risk rather than a universal checklist. Include browser families and relevant versions, operating systems, screen ranges, input types such as touch or mouse, and the user journeys that matter most. Prioritize combinations that affect essential tasks—such as signing in, searching, completing a form, or paying—before adding lower-risk coverage. The documentation for testing tools describes what they can run; it does not prescribe a matrix that guarantees compatibility for every site.

Run browser tests with Playwright
Playwright can run tests on Chromium, WebKit and Firefox, as well as branded browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, according to its browser documentation. Use projects to run the same stable, high-value checks against the engines and branded channels relevant to your support target. Separate mobile profiles into their own projects when you need them, and select projects to run a focused subset while diagnosing a failure.

Install matching browser binaries
Playwright needs browser binaries compatible with the installed Playwright package. Install them with the documented command:
npx playwright install
Keep the package and installed browsers aligned, and update them regularly so coverage reflects current browser versions. Record the Playwright and browser versions used in CI and test reports: that makes a failure easier to reproduce and distinguishes an application change from a changed test environment. See Playwright’s browser installation and version guidance.
Use projects for targeted coverage
Configure projects for the engines, browser channels, and device profiles you actually support. Run a shared critical-journey suite across those projects, then use a project-specific run to investigate a failure without losing the context of the broader matrix. A project configuration is a way to organize test environments, not evidence that every operating system and physical device has been tested.
Check responsive behavior at useful widths
Do not treat a few named device presets as complete viewport coverage. Identify the site’s own layout transitions and content stress points, then check widths around those transitions as well as representative narrow and wide screens. At each relevant size, inspect whether:

- Text wraps without hiding controls or making instructions difficult to read.
- Navigation remains available and usable, including when it collapses.
- Images and other media fit their containers without distortion or unintended clipping.
- Forms, dialogs, and validation messages remain operable and visible.
- Sticky interface elements do not obscure content or controls.
- The page avoids unintended horizontal overflow.
Test orientation changes when your experience supports them, especially if a task depends on a dialog, media area, or fixed navigation. These are layout and usability checks; changing a viewport alone does not test browser-engine compatibility.
Use emulation for breadth, then validate target environments
Playwright’s emulation features can set selected parameters, including viewport and screen size, user agent, touch, locale, timezone, permissions, geolocation, and color scheme. That makes emulation useful for repeatable responsive checks and some context-dependent flows without requiring a physical device for every automated run.
Emulation remains emulation: it does not establish that every behavior of a particular physical device, operating system, browser build, or input method has been reproduced. If a supported environment is particularly important, or a defect appears specific to a device or OS, reproduce it in that target environment. That can mean using a device the team already has or a hosted testing service; the right choice depends on the failure and the team’s access, not on buying a particular model.

Build a coverage matrix you can maintain
Use a compact matrix that maps testing axes to a reason for including them. Expand it when audience data, a critical journey, or a real failure justifies more combinations—not simply to accumulate device names.
| Axis | What to choose | What it helps reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Browser and engine | Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; add branded Chrome or Edge channels when relevant to your support target. | Differences in browser and engine behavior during key journeys. |
| OS and browser version | Versions and operating systems that your audience or support commitments make important; verify hosted-service availability against its current matrix. | Issues tied to a particular browser/OS combination or version. |
| Viewport and orientation | Widths around your actual layout breakpoints and content stress points; include orientation changes where supported. | Wrapping, overflow, obscured controls, and responsive usability problems. |
| Input and device context | Touch and other relevant input assumptions; use emulated settings for breadth and target environments for device-specific validation. | Problems dependent on input, permissions, locale, timezone, location, or device behavior. |
| Journey and risk | Prioritize the site’s essential tasks and the combinations most consequential to users. | Failures that prevent important tasks, rather than a large but low-value environment count. |
For each selected combination, record the environment, versions, viewport or device profile, test journey, and result. This makes the matrix actionable and helps you reproduce defects. The exact set should follow the site’s audience and risks; no cited source establishes one universal matrix.
Compare failures across the right dimensions
When a test fails, avoid changing several variables at once. First note the browser family and version, operating system, viewport and orientation, device context, and whether the run used emulation or a target environment. Then compare against a nearby configuration to identify which axis is associated with the failure. A difference across browser engines points toward compatibility; a difference across widths points toward responsive layout; a failure limited to a physical target may require device-specific investigation.
Keep the browser/version maintenance burden in view when choosing coverage. Local automation is repeatable and can be integrated into a test suite; hosted access can help when a team needs a particular OS, browser, or device combination. Neither option removes the need to prioritize coverage, and a passing test matrix is not a guarantee for every environment outside it.

Capture a page for visual review
A screenshot can help document a layout defect or compare how a page appears, but an image by itself does not prove that the page’s controls or journeys work. Use screenshots alongside interaction tests and checks in the relevant browser or device context. For visual evidence, choose a capture setup that represents the URL, viewport, and state you need to inspect.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its clean-capture steps can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its response headers identify page verdict and billing status. For a capture, see ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup
For a quick page capture, make one GET request. Create an API key and replace YOUR_API_KEY and the example URL with your values. Full API options are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Playwright cannot find or launch a browser
The browser binaries may not match the installed Playwright package or may not have been installed in the environment. Run npx playwright install for the installed package version, and keep the package and binaries updated together. Capture both versions in the test output so CI failures can be diagnosed against the same environment.
A page passes at one width but breaks on mobile
A desktop viewport does not cover narrow-screen layout behavior. Add checks at widths around the site’s transitions and inspect navigation, wrapping, forms, dialogs, sticky elements, and overflow. If orientation matters to the supported experience, test the change as well.
A device profile passes but a real device fails
Emulation covers selected settings, not every physical-device behavior. Record the target OS, browser, version, input, and steps, then reproduce in that actual target environment or a hosted environment that currently supports it. Check the provider matrix rather than assuming a named device remains available.

A failure appears only in one browser
Confirm the browser and version, then compare the same journey in another relevant engine while holding the viewport and other test conditions constant. This narrows whether the issue follows browser behavior or a separate responsive or device variable.
FAQ
How do I test my website on different browsers?
Run the same important automated journeys across the browser engines in your support target, using Playwright projects, and add branded Chrome or Edge channels if they matter. Keep the package and browser binaries aligned and report their versions.
How do I check responsive design across screen sizes?
Test widths around your own layout transitions and content stress points, then inspect usability issues such as wrapping, overflow, navigation, forms, dialogs, and sticky controls. Include supported orientation changes rather than assuming device presets cover every useful size.
Do I need real devices, or is browser emulation enough?
Emulation is useful for scalable checks of selected device and context settings. Use an actual or hosted target environment when a specific device/OS matters to your support target or when emulation does not reproduce a device-specific failure.
