To make a virtual or conda environment appear in Jupyter Notebook, install ipykernel with that environment’s Python, then register it as a kernel. Installing Jupyter and registering an environment are separate steps: an environment does not show up in the kernel menu just because it exists.
What Jupyter Notebook does—and what a kernel does
Jupyter Notebook is a web-based interface for documents that combine executable code with explanatory text, equations, and visualizations. Jupyter also offers other interfaces, including JupyterLab. The interface is the frontend; a kernel is the language-specific process that executes code for a notebook. Python notebooks use the IPython kernel, provided by ipykernel. Other programming languages need their own kernels.

This distinction explains the common setup problem: installing Notebook gives you an interface, but it does not automatically register every Python environment on your computer as an available kernel.

Install Jupyter Notebook
The classic Notebook installation guide describes Anaconda as a convenient route for new users and pip as an alternative for people already managing Python packages. The Python version required depends on the Notebook release, so check the current classic Notebook installation instructions rather than relying on an old minimum-version number.

Install with pip
If you manage Python packages with pip, install the classic Notebook interface using the Python installation you intend to use for Jupyter:
python -m pip install notebook
Launch it with:
jupyter notebook
Use a conda distribution
Anaconda is one documented route for installing Python and Jupyter together. Follow the current guidance for the particular Anaconda or conda distribution you use; conda setups are not all configured identically. The Jupyter installation overview outlines the available installation routes.
Add a virtual environment to Jupyter Notebook
First activate the virtual environment that should run your notebook code. Then install and register ipykernel from that environment. The key is to invoke pip and ipykernel through the environment’s Python, not through an unrelated system Python.

Install the kernel package through its Python:
python -m pip install ipykernel -
Register it with a unique internal name and a recognizable menu label:

The official IPython kernel installation instructions also show a conda workflow: create an environment with ipykernel, activate it, and register it using the same command.
Make a kernel available to a separate Jupyter installation
If Jupyter runs from one environment but the notebook should execute with Python from another, register the kernel into the Jupyter environment’s data prefix. The first path below identifies the Python that will execute notebook code; --prefix identifies the Jupyter environment where the kernelspec should be installed.
/path/to/kernel/env/bin/python -m ipykernel install
--prefix=/path/to/jupyter/env --name python-my-env
Replace the example paths with the actual environment paths for your platform. In Windows, use the environment’s Python executable path rather than the Unix-style bin/python path. This cross-environment option is documented by IPython.

Why is my environment missing from the kernel list?
Work through these checks in order. Most missing-kernel problems come down to installing or registering the kernel with a different Python, user account, or Jupyter data location than the one used by the running server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Confirm the intended Python has ipykernel
Activate the environment you want to use, then run python -m pip install ipykernel. Calling pip through python -m ensures the install targets the interpreter that the shell’s active python command resolves to.
2. Register the environment
While that environment is active, run the python -m ipykernel install --user --name myenv --display-name "Python (myenv)" command. Choose an internal name that is not already in use. Creating an environment alone does not create a kernelspec for it.
3. Check which kernelspecs Jupyter can find
Run this with the Jupyter installation that starts your Notebook server:
jupyter kernelspec list
The command lists installed kernelspecs and their locations. If the expected name is absent, registration may have gone to a different user or data prefix.

4. Inspect Jupyter’s data paths
Use these commands to inspect the active Jupyter configuration and data locations:
jupyter --paths
jupyter --data-dir
Kernelspec discovery depends on Jupyter’s data search paths. Locations differ across Linux/Unix, macOS, and Windows, and settings such as JUPYTER_PATH and JUPYTER_DATA_DIR can change where Jupyter searches. See Jupyter’s directories and file locations documentation when the listed paths do not match where you expected registration to land.
5. Match the registration location to the running server
If the kernel was registered by another user, another Python installation, or into a data prefix the active server does not search, register it where that Jupyter installation can discover it. For a kernel environment separate from the Jupyter environment, use the documented --prefix approach rather than assuming that --user points to the server’s data directory.
6. If the kernel appears but imports fail
A listed kernel can still point to an environment that lacks the packages your notebook needs. Install those dependencies in the environment selected as the notebook’s kernel, not merely in the environment that launches the Jupyter interface.
Switch Python kernels in a notebook
After registering more than one environment, choose the desired kernel from Notebook’s kernel menu and select its display name. Each kernel runs code using its own Python interpreter and installed packages, so switching kernels can change which imports work and which environment receives notebook execution. For interface-specific kernel behavior, consult Jupyter’s documentation on kernels and installing kernels.
