The Jupiter–Moon occultation advertised as happening “tomorrow” took place on October 6, 2026. From locations along the event’s path, the waning crescent Moon crossed in front of Jupiter and hid it temporarily; elsewhere, people saw only a close pairing or missed the event. The exact visibility and timing depended on location.
What happened during the October 6 event?
A lunar occultation occurs when the Moon passes in front of a more distant object as seen from a particular place on Earth. On October 6, the Moon crossed Jupiter’s line of sight for observers within the occultation path. Jupiter disappeared behind the lunar disk and later reappeared. The Moon was a waning crescent, about 20% illuminated, according to Astronomy Magazine’s 2026 event guide.

The occultation was not visible everywhere. Outside its path, the Moon and Jupiter appeared close together in the sky, but Jupiter did not pass behind the Moon from those locations. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s occultation material describes the event’s grazing and partial-visibility limits.

The main nighttime viewing region included much of the eastern and central United States and parts of southern Canada, as outlined in Astronomy Magazine’s visibility guide. Observers near the northern or southern edges could see a grazing or partial occultation. Farther west, some saw Jupiter reappear after the Moon rose rather than watch it disappear.

These broad regions are not a substitute for a location-specific prediction. The apparent path across the Moon and the local times of disappearance and reappearance vary by observer. Astronomy Magazine’s guide provides city-specific circumstances and notes that local conditions differ.
What time did the occultation happen?
There was no single time that applied to every location. For Virginia Beach, Virginia, a NASA Night Sky Network listing from Back Bay Amateur Astronomers gave an observing window of 4:14 to 5:27 a.m. Eastern on October 6, 2026. That window is specific to Virginia Beach, not a national schedule.

Event coverage described Jupiter as hidden for up to about an hour in relevant locations, but the actual interval depended on where the observer stood. Live Science’s October 2026 guide gives the approximate duration; for local disappearance and reappearance times, consult a city-specific prediction such as the circumstances in Astronomy Magazine’s guide.
Did you need a telescope?
No. Event coverage said the disappearance and reappearance could be watched without a telescope. Binoculars or a small telescope were optional ways to make the view more dramatic; a telescope also shows Jupiter as a small disk rather than a point of light, as described by Live Science and Astronomy Magazine.

Whether an observer could see the event also depended on the Moon’s altitude, sky darkness and weather. Those conditions were not assessed for individual locations in the published event summaries.
What does “once in a decade” mean?
The phrase refers to how rarely a particular observer may get a favorable local view, not to Jupiter being occulted only once worldwide every decade. Space.com’s October 2026 coverage attributes an estimate of about once every 13 years at a particular location under dark-sky conditions to skywatching columnist Joe Rao. That is a qualified local-rarity estimate, not a global event schedule.

Why the “tomorrow” headline is out of date
The event guides date the occultation to Tuesday, October 6, 2026. As of October 7, it has already happened, so it is no longer an upcoming observation opportunity. The date correction is confirmed by the Astronomy Magazine event guide and the NASA Night Sky Network listing.
