Judo vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Rules, Techniques, and Which to Try

Judo emphasizes throws and their follow-up; BJJ commonly focuses on ground control and submissions. Compare rules, skills, and beginner-class fit before choosing.

Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) both train grappling on the feet and on the ground, but competition and class time often emphasize different things. Judo puts the throw and the resulting control at the center of its contest strategy; BJJ commonly gives extended attention to ground positions and submissions. Neither art is limited to one phase. If you are choosing a first class, compare nearby beginner sessions, schedules, costs, and training cultures—and try both if you can.

How do judo and BJJ differ in competition?

The clearest distinction is emphasis, not an absolute division between standing and ground skills. Judo contests reward throws and can continue into groundwork. Common BJJ competition formats give substantial weight to positional control and submissions, though scoring and permitted techniques depend on the event’s ruleset.

Dimension Judo Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Contest emphasis Throws and the control or groundwork that follows are central. The IJF’s detailed scoring explanation says referees assess the recognized technique, continuity of action, and landing. Ground position, control, and submissions are prominent in common formats. The IBJJF rules resources list Rule Book v6.0; scoring and legal techniques depend on the event’s ruleset and division.
Standing skills Grip fighting, off-balancing, and throws are characteristic skills. Competition rules shape which actions are permitted. Takedowns and standing exchanges can be trained, but the amount of class or match time devoted to them varies by school and format.
Ground skills Groundwork and transitions after a throw are part of judo; it is not throws only. Ground positional control, escapes, and submissions commonly receive extensive attention. Legal submissions vary by ruleset, age, and belt division.
Clothing Training uses a judogi. The IJF publishes judogi rules relevant to its competitions. Gi classes use a BJJ gi; no-gi classes use other training clothing. The IBJJF maintains uniform rules.
May appeal if you want to focus on… Balance, gripping, learning throws, and dynamic standing exchanges. Positional problem-solving, ground control, escapes, and submissions.

Those last two descriptions are broad guides, not claims that either sport has only those skills. Local curriculum and competition rules vary.

What should you know about the rules?

Judo: scoring and changing rules

The IJF’s refereeing explanation, updated on 25 March 2023, outlines how technique, continuity, and landing inform scoring. It is useful for understanding the basic framework, but it is not the newest complete rulebook.

Judo rules change. In an announcement dated 13 December 2024, the IJF described international-level changes for the cycle beginning in 2025, including the return of a yuko score and changes concerning grips and leg attacks. The IJF’s documents index lists a 2026 Sport and Organisation Rules version. For a specific competition question, consult the applicable current rules and event guidance rather than assuming an older summary covers it all.

BJJ: check the event’s ruleset

BJJ has no single competition ruleset used by every school and tournament. The IBJJF’s Books and Videos page lists Rule Book v6.0 and an update guide, and its rules-course page directs learners to the rulebook. Match procedures, scoring, penalties, and legal techniques should be checked against the rules for the relevant organization, event, age group, and belt division.

Which one should you try first?

Choose based on the training you are keen to practise and the class you can realistically attend. A welcoming beginner class at a convenient club is often a better starting point than an abstract ranking of the arts.

  • Try judo if learning throws, grip fighting, and standing exchanges sounds especially appealing.
  • Try BJJ if you are drawn to ground positions, escapes, positional control, and submissions.
  • Try both if you are undecided and introductory classes are available nearby. Notice which class makes you want to return; the emphasis and beginner experience can differ between clubs.

There is no sound basis here for declaring one universally easier, safer, more effective, or better for self-defense. Those comparisons depend on the student’s goals, instruction, training partners, and what a particular club teaches.

How to assess a beginner class

  1. Find a beginner session. Contact local clubs and ask whether newcomers can observe or attend an introductory class.
  2. Ask what to wear. Do not assume you need to buy a gi before your first visit; clubs may have guidance for trial sessions.
  3. Compare practical fit. Check the schedule, travel time, total fees, class size, and how instructors pair beginners with partners.
  4. Ask about partner safety. Find out how the class manages intensity, tapping, and pairing new students.
  5. Confirm uniform requirements before buying. IJF and IBJJF competitions have distinct uniform rules, and a judo gi should not be assumed suitable for a BJJ school or event. Ask the academy about accepted uniform, sizing, and any competition needs.
