To use a Ninja single-serve coffee maker, first match the instructions to your model, then choose the correct insert for pods or grounds, select a brew style and size, and press Brew. The built-in frother makes foam but does not heat milk, so warm milk separately if you want hot froth. The steps below follow the PB040/050 owner’s guide; SharkNinja’s PB051 listing describes a related model, but accessories and controls can vary. Check the model label on the back of your machine and use its exact guide for model-specific details.
Before you brew: check the model and prime the machine
The instructions here are for the PB040/050 family. SharkNinja lists the PB051 as a pods-and-grounds brewer with four brew styles and a built-in fold-away frother, but the PB051 and PB040/050 are different model identifiers. Confirm your model and its included accessories in the PB051 product listing or the guide for your machine; do not assume every insert or control is interchangeable.

- Wash the removable accessories before first use.
- Fill the reservoir with cool or room-temperature fresh water to at least the 24-ounce line. The PB040/050 guide specifies a 56-ounce reservoir and advises against hot or boiling water in the reservoir.
- Place the brew basket and Permanent Filter in the machine without adding coffee.
- Set a cup or travel mug that holds 24 ounces under the nozzle. Select a 24-ounce Classic brew and press Brew.
- Discard the water when the cycle finishes. The machine is ready for coffee.
This first water-only brew is the guide’s priming step, not a coffee recipe.
Choose pods or ground coffee and install the right insert
The two formats use different inserts. For pods, use the Ninja Pod Adapter. For grounds, remove that adapter and use the Permanent Filter in the brew basket. The PB040/050 guide warns not to brew grounds directly in the basket without the Permanent Filter, to avoid fine or espresso grounds, and not to force a pod that does not fit.

To brew a pod
- Open the machine and check that the brew basket and Ninja Pod Adapter are installed with their handles aligned.
- Place a suitable, undamaged pod in the adapter. Do not remove the pod’s top or force it into place.
- Position an empty cup under the nozzle. Close the lid firmly until it clicks and pierces the pod.
- Select a brew style and size available on your model, then press Brew.
The PB040/050 guide says reusable K-Cup filters are not compatible with the Ninja Pod Adapter. For use at high altitude, it gives an additional instruction for K-Cup pods: before closing the lid, carefully press the pod’s bottom until the exit needle punctures it and the pod is fully seated.
To brew ground coffee
- Remove the Ninja Pod Adapter from the brew basket.
- Fit the Permanent Filter into the basket and add grounds using the measurement chart in your model’s guide. Do not exceed its stated amount.
- Close the filter lid and the machine lid, then place a cup under the nozzle.
- Choose an available brew style and size and press Brew.
A brief pause during a brew can be part of the cycle, according to the PB040/050 guide; allow the machine to continue rather than treating every pause as a fault.

Pick a brew style for the drink you want
The PB040/050 guide describes four styles. Availability depends on model; SharkNinja lists all four for the PB051. A style changes the brewing approach, so choose according to the drink rather than assuming one setting is best for every coffee.

|---|---|---|
| Classic | Smooth, balanced coffee. | Also used for the initial water-only priming brew in the PB040/050 instructions. |
| Rich | A more intense brew, suited to milk, cream, or flavoring. | Choose it when you want coffee that holds its character in a milk-based drink. |
| Over Ice | A concentrated brew intended for a vessel filled to the top with ice. | Fill the cup with ice before brewing into it. |
| Specialty | A concentrated brew of about four ounces for coffee drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos. | Confirm your model offers this style. |
Froth milk with the built-in whisk
The frother aerates milk; it does not heat it. For cold froth, use cold milk. For hot froth, the PB040/050 guide directs you to heat the milk separately in a microwave for 45–60 seconds before frothing.

- After frothing: Clean the whisk after every use.
- After brewing: Wash the brew basket and pod adapter with warm, soapy water. Clean the pod adapter needle if residue is present.
- Periodically: Check the removable nozzle for coffee residue that could contribute to overflow.
- When the clean indicator illuminates: Run the clean cycle using white vinegar or a descaling solution prepared to that product’s specifications. The PB040/050 guide says the cycle takes approximately 75 minutes. Do not interrupt it if you are relying on it to descale fully.
- After descaling: Wash the reservoir, then run a 24-ounce water-only Classic brew to flush the system.
