Use JSON for machine-to-machine exchange and generated data when compatibility with JSON-oriented tools matters most. Use YAML when people will regularly read and edit configuration and benefit from comments or block-style formatting. If YAML must feed a JSON consumer, define a compatible subset and test the exact parser and conversion path.
How to choose between JSON and YAML

This is a contextual choice, not a rule that YAML cannot be used in APIs. RFC 9512 notes YAML’s use on the Internet and in the API sector; JSON is often the practical fit when an interface is designed around JSON consumers. What compatibility between YAML and JSON really means
The YAML 1.2.2 specification says, “YAML can therefore be viewed as a natural superset of JSON, offering improved human readability and a more complete information model.” In practical terms, YAML can represent JSON-style flow structures, but JSON cannot represent every YAML feature. A YAML document is not automatically safe to hand to a JSON-only consumer.
RFC 9512 identifies several features that can be lost, unsupported, or need special handling when YAML is converted to JSON. Comments, directives, and alias nodes have no JSON counterpart and may be discarded. Multi-document streams, non-UTF-8 encodings, non-string mapping keys, cyclic references, `.inf` and `.nan`, timestamps and custom tags can also create interoperability problems.

- Agree on an allowed subset: Specify which YAML version and features producers may use, including whether documents must contain only JSON-compatible values.
- Make conversion explicit: Decide how the receiving system handles comments, aliases, keys, tags, and any values it cannot represent.
- Test the actual path: Run representative documents through the parser and serializer used in production, then verify the resulting JSON data.
YAML’s implicit typing can also vary with parser version. RFC 9512 describes YAML 1.2 booleans as `true`, `True`, `TRUE`, `false`, `False`, or `FALSE`; older parsers may interpret words such as `YES` or `NO` differently. Quote strings that could be ambiguous, and constrain parser versions when consistent interpretation matters.

How to handle YAML safely
YAML is not inherently unsafe, but its features and the parser’s configuration matter when input is untrusted. RFC 9512 warns that resolving tags may trigger unexpected code execution and that cyclic or expanding alias graphs can consume excessive resources. It notes that many implementations provide safe deserializers.

- Use a safe deserialization mode and keep code execution disabled unless the application explicitly requires it.
- Set limits on alias recursion or expansion and other resource consumption where the parser allows it.
- Validate parsed data against the application’s expected structure and values.
- Test the implementation and configuration that will process the input; safety behavior is parser-specific.
For generated interchange data, JSON’s constrained model can reduce ambiguity, but it does not remove the need to validate input or understand parser behavior.

Does one format run faster or produce smaller files?
The cited standards establish design goals and interoperability properties, not a universal speed or file-size winner. Performance depends on the parser, data shape, and workload. If those factors matter to your application, benchmark the specific implementations and representative data you plan to use rather than choosing based on a general claim.
