Use JPG for most photographs when broad compatibility and smaller files matter, PNG when you need exact pixels or transparency, and WebP for web delivery when you want lossy or lossless compression, transparency, or animation in one format. The right choice depends on the image and the software that must display it; compare the exported file and inspect it at its intended size.

How JPG, PNG, and WebP differ
JPG (JPEG): lossy compression for still images
JPEG is a lossy format and a common choice for compressing photographs and other still images. Its compression discards image information, so repeated editing and saving can degrade quality. JPEG does not support transparency, and it is not suitable when every pixel must remain exact. It is broadly supported across major browsers, making it a practical option when compatibility matters. PNG: lossless pixels and an alpha channel
PNG uses lossless encoding, so it preserves the image data rather than trading it away for smaller files. It supports an optional alpha channel for transparency. That makes it a strong fit for screenshots, diagrams, logos, text, and line art, where blur or colored fringes around sharp edges are noticeable. PNG is not automatically the smallest choice for every image. The W3C PNG specification describes it as a portable raster format for lossless image storage.

WebP: lossy and lossless options, plus transparency and animation
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency and animation. This flexibility can make it useful for web images: lossy encoding can suit photographs, while lossless encoding can suit graphics where sharp edges need to stay clean. WebP has broad support in current browsers, but its historical support is less deep than JPG and PNG. Check the browsers and other software your audience uses before relying on it alone. Will WebP make your files smaller?
Not necessarily. Google’s WebP overview, last updated August 7, 2025, reports that WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNGs and that lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Those are Google’s published comparisons, not guaranteed savings for a particular image or conversion.
The source image and encoding settings affect the result. Google’s WebP FAQ notes that conversion can increase file size—for example, when converting between lossy and lossless representations or encoding at a higher quality than the source. Compare the actual output file and inspect its visual quality rather than choosing by extension alone.

How to offer WebP with a fallback on a website
If you need to serve WebP while retaining an alternative for other clients, HTML’s <picture> element lets the browser select among image sources and use a fallback. Set the fallback to the format your site needs to support, such as JPG or PNG. MDN documents the picture element and its use for alternate image formats.

Converting images without assuming a size reduction
Google’s cwebp command-line tool accepts JPEG and PNG inputs and provides controls for lossy output quality as well as a lossless mode. A conversion changes the encoding; it does not guarantee a smaller file or an identical-looking result. Compare the output size, inspect important details at the intended display size, and verify transparency or animation if the image needs either.
