For most websites serving a broad mix of browsers, WebP is the practical default among JPEG XL, WebP, and AVIF. AVIF is worth testing when it delivers smaller files at an acceptable visual quality and decode cost; serve a fallback. JPEG XL offers capabilities such as progressive decoding and reversible JPEG transcoding, but its browser support remains incomplete. The right choice depends on your images, target browsers, and delivery pipeline—not a universal compression ranking.
At a glance: how the formats compare
| Decision | JPEG XL | WebP | AVIF |

| Lossy and lossless encoding | Both. | Both; RFC 9649 specifies lossless recovery of pixel values. | Both, according to AOMedia. |
| Transparency and animation | Both supported. | Both supported. | Both supported. |
| HDR and wide color | Supported, including high bit depths. | Google documents lossy WebP as 8-bit Y’CbCr 4:2:0; it is not the choice here for high-bit-depth HDR workflows. | Supported, including HDR and wide color gamut. |
| Progressive behavior | Progressive decoding is supported, but MDN notes Safari renders JPEG XL only after the full download. | The RFC describes chunk ordering that can allow decoding before all data arrives; this is not the same as JPEG XL’s progressive coding capability. | The specification supports progressive decoding through layered images, but MDN says AVIF does not support progressive rendering in its comparison with WebP. |
| Recover an original JPEG after conversion | Supports lossless transcoding from JPEG with the original recoverable. | No equivalent reversible-JPEG feature is established in the cited sources. | No equivalent reversible-JPEG feature is established in the cited sources. |
These are format capabilities, not a guarantee that every encoder, decoder, browser, or application implements each feature equally. Check the specific features your pipeline needs, especially animation, HDR, metadata, and progressive behavior. Browser support changes, so confirm the versions and feature subsets that matter to your audience in MDN’s image format guide.

Choose based on your site’s priorities
Choose WebP for a straightforward broad-compatibility default
WebP combines lossy and lossless compression with transparency and animation, and MDN lists support across Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. That combination makes it a sensible starting point when one broadly supported format is more important than specialized capabilities. WebP’s documented lossy color representation is 8-bit Y’CbCr 4:2:0, so it is not the pick here for high-bit-depth HDR work.

MDN says lossy WebP images are on average 25–35% smaller than JPEG images at visually similar compression levels, and that lossless WebP images are typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG. Those are MDN’s general comparisons, not guaranteed savings for a particular image or encoder. Google’s WebP FAQ separately says WebP typically achieves an average of 30% more compression than JPEG without loss of image quality; treat that as Google’s stated result, not an independent universal benchmark. The format is described in IETF RFC 9649, published in November 2024 as an informational RFC, not an Internet Standards Track specification.

Test AVIF when delivered bytes matter and the result holds up
AVIF stores AV1 images in the HEIF file format. Its specification supports lossy and lossless images, transparency, image sequences, HDR, wide color gamut, auxiliary data, and layered images that permit progressive decoding. That makes it a candidate for image pipelines where smaller transfers or richer image features are useful, provided your chosen encoder and clients handle the needed features well.
AOMedia’s current overview claims over 50% file-size savings compared with JPEG and over 30% compared with WebP. The overview does not provide enough benchmark conditions to treat those figures as reproducible across your images, encoders, and quality targets. They are format-steward claims, not a controlled comparison of the three formats. Consult the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) v1.2.0 specification, whose final deliverable is dated October 16, 2025, and AOMedia’s AVIF overview.

Choose JPEG XL for capabilities your workflow actually needs
JPEG XL supports lossy and lossless coding, transparency, animation, HDR, wide color gamut, high bit depths, and progressive decoding. A distinctive use is losslessly transcoding an existing JPEG while retaining the ability to reconstruct the original, which can matter in JPEG archive workflows. Its current browser reach is the limiting factor for general web delivery: MDN lists Safari, Chrome behind a flag, and Firefox Nightly, and recommends a fallback. MDN also notes that Safari does not progressively render JPEG XL while it is downloading; it displays the image after the full download.
MDN describes JPEG XL as “a royalty-free raster image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181.” See the MDN image format guide and the JPEG organization’s JPEG XL page.

Why there is no universal compression winner
File size comparisons are meaningful only when the images, encoders, and visual-quality targets are comparable. Encoder quality numbers are not interchangeable: the same nominal setting across formats does not establish equal visual quality. The available general claims also use different baselines, so they cannot be combined into a defensible ranking of JPEG XL, WebP, and AVIF. No common controlled comparison of all three under shared encoders, source images, and quality criteria is established here.
Instead, compare representative images from your own site at matched visual-quality targets. Include photographs, graphics, transparency, and animation as separate cases; a format that works well for one category may not lead for another. Record the output bytes, the quality method or human review used, and encode and decode time. Then weigh those results against the browser support and client constraints you need to meet.

Serve a fallback and verify the deployed pipeline
For web delivery, use the HTML <picture> element or an equivalent negotiated image pipeline to offer alternatives. Keep a broadly supported fallback, particularly when offering AVIF or JPEG XL, and test the exact browser versions and feature subsets relevant to your audience. Do not assume a format’s specification guarantees that a particular browser, encoder, image service, or application implements every capability.
