Chrome 145 documented decoding as an origin trial, and a September 2026 announcement listed it for Chrome 155 beta. If your copy of Chrome displays the image, it can decode that file in your current browser configuration; if it does not, Chrome’s documentation does not promise a universal setting that will fix it.
Can Chrome open JPEG XL files?
It depends on the Chrome version, release channel, and build configuration. Chrome refers to the format as image/jxl and describes JPEG XL as standardized in ISO/IEC 18181. That does not mean every Chrome installation supports it by default.

What Chrome 145 documented
Chrome 145 release notes described JPEG XL decoding in Blink as an origin trial. The trial was gated behind the enable-jxl-image-format feature flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. Those details describe that trial implementation; they are not a general instruction for enabling JPEG XL in any Chrome version. Chrome 145 release notes

A Chrome 155 beta announcement dated September 16, 2026, also listed JPEG XL decoding in Blink, using jxl-rs, a memory-safe decoder written in Rust. The announcement concerns the beta channel at publication. Its cited passage does not establish that the feature is enabled by default in stable Chrome or identify a user-facing setting. How to try opening a .jxl image in Chrome
- Open Chrome and try opening the image using the way you normally access local files, such as dragging the
.jxlfile into a browser tab. You can also try opening the file from your file manager with Chrome. - If the image appears, Chrome has decoded it in your current browser build and configuration. You can view it in the browser, but that alone does not mean Chrome can export it to another image format.
- If Chrome shows an error or a blank page, check whether you are using a stable or beta build and whether Chrome is up to date. The release notes cited above do not guarantee support in stable Chrome or provide a universal user-facing switch to turn it on.
- If you are considering a flag, do not treat the Chrome 145 origin-trial flag as a current, universal fix. Its documented behavior depended on both a feature flag and a build flag, and later channel-specific support does not establish that the same steps work in your installation.
Opening a JPEG XL file is not the same as converting it
Opening, or decoding, means displaying the image. Conversion means producing a new file—for example, a JPEG or PNG—that another app or service can use. The Chrome sources cited here document decoding support, not a workflow for exporting a local .jxl file as JPEG or PNG. Do not assume that viewing the file in Chrome creates a converted copy.
If you need a JPEG or PNG, use a separate image converter. The Chrome documentation cited here does not recommend a converter or establish its current maintenance, platform support, or conversion features, so choose a tool based on your operating system and the image characteristics you need to preserve.
Quick Recap
Why a .jxl file may not display
- Your Chrome build may not include or enable the decoder. The documented support has varied by release and channel; Chrome 145 described an origin trial, while the later announcement concerned Chrome 155 beta.
- A feature flag is not a universal fix. The Chrome 145 documentation also names a build flag, so changing a browser flag alone may not make decoding available in a given installation.
- You may need a converted copy instead. Chrome’s cited documentation covers displaying JPEG XL, not exporting it to a more widely accepted format.
