JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. It supports lossy and lossless images, animation, transparency, HDR, and progressive coding, among other features. As of October 3, 2026, Safari support is established from Safari 17, while Chromium and Firefox are in rollout transitions whose stable-channel status is not confirmed by the cited announcements. For websites, serve JXL as an option with an AVIF, WebP, or JPEG fallback rather than making it the only image source.
What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL is a raster-image coding system designed for uses including responsive web delivery and professional photography. It is standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 by the JPEG Committee. The format combines lossy and lossless coding in an extensible container that can hold metadata such as EXIF and JUMBF, as well as data used to reconstruct a source JPEG.

JPEG XL is intended to be implemented in software without requiring specialized hardware acceleration, including on mobile devices. Its design balances image fidelity, encoding and decoding speed, and compression ratio; results vary with the image and encoding choices.
JPEG XL features
Lossy and lossless coding
JXL can encode images with lossy compression or preserve image data losslessly. It also supports lossless transcoding of existing JPEG files: a JPEG can be converted to JXL and later reconstructed as the exact original JPEG. That makes it possible to explore storage savings while retaining a reversible path to the source file.

Progressive rendering
Progressive coding lets an image begin to appear before all image data has arrived. This can be useful on slower connections, but the format’s capability does not guarantee that a browser implements it. Safari, for example, does not progressively render JXL during download according to MDN’s format guide.
Animation, transparency, and image fidelity
The format supports animation and alpha transparency, along with layers and thumbnails. It also accommodates high bit depth, wide-gamut color, and HDR workflows. Browser implementations may expose only some capabilities; Mozilla’s 2026 comparison notes that Safari’s implementation discussed there did not support animation or progressive rendering.
Where JPEG XL can be useful
- Reversible JPEG migration: Lossless JPEG transcoding can reduce storage while preserving the ability to restore the exact original JPEG.
- Lossless image delivery or archiving: JXL may be worth testing when preserving image data matters. Mozilla’s cited lossless examples favored JXL over AVIF, but those individual examples are not a universal benchmark.
- Progressive delivery: The format supports progressive coding, which can provide an early image preview as data arrives in implementations that support it.
- Photography and advanced color workflows: Its lossy and lossless modes, high bit depth, wide gamut, and HDR support address a broad range of image needs.
JXL is not guaranteed to make every image smaller or faster to decode than AVIF or WebP. Compare formats using representative images, the visual quality your audience needs, and the browsers your site serves.

JPEG XL versus AVIF and WebP
In an August 2026 article, Mozilla developer Jake Archibald describes JPEG XL as strong for lossless imagery, progressive rendering, and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss. He describes AVIF as strong for web-quality photography and images that mix sharp edges with flat surfaces. The examples below are measurements from that article, not format-wide results.
| Mozilla example | AVIF | JPEG XL | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fox photograph, SSIMULACRA 2 score 62.8 | 116 kB | 134 kB | AVIF was smaller in this lossy example. |
| Same fox photograph, score 80 | 227 kB | 264 kB | AVIF was smaller in this lossy example. |
| Lossless fox photograph | 1.76 MB | 1.45 MB | JXL was smaller; lossless WebP was 1.55 MB. |
| Screenshot, SSIMULACRA 2 score 78 | 11.6 kB | 23.8 kB | AVIF was smaller in this lossy example. |
| Lossless screenshot | 164 kB | 92 kB | JXL was smaller. |
These figures are from Jake Archibald’s 2026 Mozilla Hacks article, “Intent to Ship: JPEG XL”. They demonstrate why image type and lossy-versus-lossless requirements matter, not which format always wins. Test a representative image set at target quality and account for high-density displays, as Archibald recommends.
JPEG XL browser support as of October 3, 2026
Support is changing. The table distinguishes shipped support or documented availability from rollout intentions; an announcement that a feature is intended to ship does not establish that a named stable release already has it enabled by default.

| Browser | Status supported by the cited sources | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Safari | MDN lists support from Safari 17. MDN says Safari renders JXL after the complete download rather than progressively during download. | JXL can be displayed in supported Safari versions, but do not count on progressive rendering there. |
| Chrome / Chromium | MDN lists Chrome 145+ support behind the #enable-jxl-image-format flag. Chromium’s August 24, 2026 intent-to-ship says the Blink decoder will ship enabled for all users, but gives no estimated milestones. |
The cited announcement does not confirm a particular stable Chrome release with default-on support. |
| Firefox | MDN describes support in preview releases. Mozilla’s August 24, 2026 post said Nightly had support enabled by default and a Firefox Labs checkbox was available on every channel since Firefox 152. A September 3 update moved the planned default-on target from train 157 to train 158. | The cited rollout notes do not establish final stable-channel availability on October 3, 2026. |
Sources: MDN, Chromium’s intent-to-ship announcement, and Mozilla’s rollout discussion and September 3 update. Browser releases continue to change, so check current compatibility and test the versions your users actually run before relying on JXL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I use JPEG XL on my website?
Yes, as a progressive enhancement with a fallback. MDN recommends offering formats such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG in a <picture> element while support is not universal. Browsers select a supported source and use the fallback image if none of the earlier formats are supported.

<source srcset="/images/hero.jxl" type="image/jxl">
<source srcset="/images/hero.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="/images/hero.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="/images/hero.jpg" alt="A description of the image">
</picture>
Use the same visual subject and appropriate dimensions for each source. Keep the JPEG fallback for browsers that do not support any offered modern format, and make sure the alt text remains meaningful regardless of which file is selected. Do not switch to JXL-only delivery until your own browser-usage data and testing justify that choice.

Tools for working with JPEG XL
Browser support is only one part of a JXL workflow; software tooling can encode, inspect, or edit files. The libjxl project maintains a changing inventory that includes libraries, editors, viewers, operating-system plugins, and online tools, including ImageMagick, GIMP, Adobe Camera Raw, and Squoosh. Check the libjxl software support list for current tool details.

JPEG XL browser support matters when serving JXL image files on a website. If your task is instead to capture a web page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its GET endpoint returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a JPEG XL encoder.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the capture was billed.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan.
