PR teams are beginning to track which journalists and outlets AI systems cite when describing companies. That creates a new way to examine how media coverage feeds into a brand’s AI-generated image—but it does not mean journalists have a universal or validated personal “AI reputation score.” The emerging practice is organizational reputation monitoring: checking what AI says about a company, which sources it draws on, and how those answers change.
What “AI reputation” means for journalists
When someone asks an AI assistant about a company, the system produces an answer from material it considers relevant. Some answers identify sources. PR teams can review those citations to see whether journalists and outlets appear in the explanations AI generates about the company.

That makes citation mapping a new communications signal: teams can look beyond how many stories a company receives and examine which sources appear to shape AI-generated descriptions. Muck Rack describes tools that map journalists and outlets cited in AI responses and track brand visibility and sentiment. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent confirmation of performance. Muck Rack’s AI reputation page also reports that 95%+ of AI-cited links are from non-paid media and that pitched journalists overlap with AI-cited journalists by an average of 2%. The page passage does not state the publication year or methodology for those figures, so they should be treated as vendor claims, not general benchmarks.

The practical subject is which journalists and outlets are cited in answers about organizations—not a settled system for ranking journalists themselves.

What PR teams are monitoring
AI reputation monitoring is an emerging workflow that examines generated answers, their cited sources, and changes over time. PRCA guidance recommends that commissioned PR work include AI reputation audits, ongoing monitoring and reporting, and preparedness for crises and misinformation. The PRCA’s April 2026 guidance announcement frames AI as a growing consideration for communications procurement and planning.
- Visibility: whether a company appears in answers to relevant questions.
- Description and sentiment: how AI characterizes the company and whether the framing is positive, negative, or mixed.
- Citations: which journalists, outlets, and other sources appear in answers.
- Competitors and change: how the company is presented relative to competitors, and whether answers or sources shift across systems or over time.
The source environment can extend well beyond a company’s own newsroom and press coverage. Editorial articles, reviews, communities, commercial comparison pages, and company-owned material may all feature, with the mix varying by platform and prompt.

Why earned media is part of the conversation
Studies show that outside sources can feature prominently in AI answers, but their findings apply to distinct samples and should not be generalized into one universal citation share.
| Study | Population and scope | Reported source finding |
|---|---|---|
| LEOPRD, reported by Telum Media in 2026 | 31,200 AI responses analyzed from a wider dataset of more than 214,000 monitored-brand responses. The study covered 27 brands, seven categories, eight AI platforms, and Australia and Great Britain; responses were gathered in March 2026. | 86% of citations came from outside the monitored brands’ own properties in this tested dataset. This is not a universal share. Telum Media’s report |
| FTI Consulting, 2025 | ChatGPT representations of DAX 40 companies. | News media accounted for 25% of sources, company websites 25%, and investor media 21% in this analysis. These figures describe this study’s population and model, not AI answers generally. FTI Consulting’s report |
These studies support the idea that external coverage can be part of a company’s AI-generated profile. They do not establish that a particular article caused an answer, that citations directly determine recommendations, or that every AI system uses sources in the same way.

Why one AI answer is not a reputation measure
A generated response can vary with the AI platform, prompt, geography, language, and time. In LEOPRD’s study, only 40% of repeated test groups produced the same recommendation outcome throughout. The study also found that sources could change while recommendations stayed the same, or that recommendations could change despite similar sources. That variability makes a single screenshot a weak basis for judging a company’s standing.
Priya Bendre, SBU Lead – PR & Corporate Communications at Fortis Healthcare, similarly cautioned in a September 2026 Adgully interview that AI answers vary by platform, prompt, geography, and time. These are reasons to treat monitoring as a repeated, carefully described observation—not a definitive score. Nor does a correlation between a cited source and an answer establish that the source caused the answer.

How to check what AI says about a company
- Define the question. Choose prompts that reflect what real readers might ask, such as “What does this company do?” or “Is this company reliable?” Record the exact wording rather than paraphrasing results later.
- Record the conditions. Note the AI system, date, geography, language, and prompt for each run. Keep those conditions consistent when comparing results.
- Repeat the runs. Ask the same questions more than once and repeat them over time. Where relevant, test more than one platform and more than one prompt; do not let one answer stand in for all of them.
- Separate the measures. Log whether the company is mentioned, how it is described, what sentiment is expressed, which sources are cited, and whether a recommendation is made. These are different observations, not interchangeable measures.
- Inspect citations and verify claims. Identify the journalists, outlets, and other sources cited, then check the underlying material and the accuracy of the AI’s claims. A citation’s appearance does not by itself establish that the source supports every part of the answer.
- Compare results over time. Keep a dated record so changes in visibility, wording, citations, or recommendations can be assessed against the conditions of each run.
For teams evaluating monitoring software or services, useful questions include which AI systems are covered; how prompts are selected and repeated; whether citation history can be retained; whether journalist and outlet identities are exposed; what language and geography are supported; whether reports distinguish visibility, sentiment, citations, and recommendations; and whether human analysts help interpret results. The cited material does not provide an independent comparative product test or a validated pricing comparison.
What the trend does—and does not—show
The evidence points to a developing PR practice: examining AI-generated descriptions of organizations and tracing the sources cited in those answers. It does not show that each journalist has an established AI reputation, that coverage guarantees visibility in AI answers, or that citation counts alone measure influence. The defensible takeaway is narrower: communications teams now have reason to ask which sources appear in AI explanations of a company, and to monitor those appearances with consistent methods and appropriate caution.
