Can Strong Magnetic Fields Let White Dwarfs Exceed the Chandrasekhar Limit?

A 2026 stellar-evolution simulation finds that magnetic effects may let some modeled white dwarfs exceed the classical Chandrasekhar limit. Its 2.4-solar-mass result is theoretical, not a direct observation.

Possibly, according to a 2026 stellar-evolution simulation—but it has not established that a white dwarf with 2.4 times the Sun’s mass has been observed. In one modeled scenario, a strongly magnetized white dwarf accreting from a companion reaches about 2.4 solar masses, while a corresponding non-magnetized model reaches about 1.4 solar masses. Those are results for specified model assumptions, not universal mass limits.

What is the Chandrasekhar limit?

The Chandrasekhar limit is the familiar reference mass for a white dwarf in the classical, non-strongly-magnetized case. The 2026 study asks how including magnetic effects could change the mass at which a white dwarf remains stable. It does not replace the classical reference with a single new limit that applies to every white dwarf.

What did the 2026 study find?

Zenia Zuraiq and six coauthors describe simulations that follow magnetized main-sequence stars as they evolve into non-rotating white dwarfs. They used the Cambridge stellar-evolution code STARS, modified to include magnetic effects and cooling, and examined stability below and above the Chandrasekhar limit. The paper’s abstract says the resulting mass limits depend on magnetic-field geometry, accretion from a companion, and cooling rate. Read the paper abstract and record.

The modeled 2.4-solar-mass case

The Indian Institute of Science’s 9 October 2026 release describes a particular accretion model: an 8-solar-mass main-sequence star produces a 1.02-solar-mass carbon-oxygen white dwarf, which then accretes matter from a binary companion at 10−9 solar masses per year. In that model, the magnetized white dwarf reaches a mass limit of about 2.4 solar masses. Under the corresponding non-magnetized model, the limit is about 1.4 solar masses. These figures belong to that modeled setup; the release does not present them as a universal result or as a measured stellar mass. See the IISc release.

How could a magnetic field raise the modeled limit?

The release’s explanation of the simulated pathway is that the white dwarf begins with a weak field. As it accretes matter, it grows denser and contracts; in the model, that contraction strengthens the field. The stronger field contributes additional pressure, changing the star’s modeled mass–radius relationship and possible mass limit.

This is a proposed mechanism within the simulations, not a directly observed sequence in a white dwarf. The calculated outcome depends on how the model represents the magnetic field and the star’s evolution.

Why do geometry, accretion and cooling matter?

A magnetic field’s geometry affects how its influence is represented inside the star. Accretion changes the white dwarf’s mass and structure, while cooling and magnetic-field evolution can change its properties over time. The 2026 abstract identifies field geometry, companion accretion and cooling rates as factors in the resulting limits; therefore, the 2.4-solar-mass example should not be read as independent of those conditions. The study’s abstract describes its stability analysis and these dependencies.

Related work illustrates why time evolution matters, but its numbers are not results of the 2026 model. A 2022 study by Zuraiq and colleagues modeled field decay alongside cooling. It reported that models with central fields around 1014 gauss could produce white dwarfs of roughly 2.0 solar masses, and that some modeled limiting masses could decline to 1.5 solar masses over time. These are distinct, model-specific findings, not additional predictions for the 2026 accretion example. Read the 2022 study.

Does this mean scientists discovered a 2.4-solar-mass white dwarf?

No. The 2.4-solar-mass figure comes from a theoretical simulation. The study models a possible evolutionary route from a main-sequence star to a white dwarf; it does not report direct observation of a white dwarf at that mass. First author Zenia Zuraiq described the central question as whether a star could actually evolve into such an object, rather than whether a theoretical configuration could simply be constructed. The release says the simulations show that this pathway is possible under certain conditions; that is a model result, not an observational discovery.

What could the result help explain?

The IISc release suggests the work may help explain some white dwarfs whose radii are larger than expected for their low masses. It also discusses possible implications for Type Ia supernova progenitors and for interpreting their luminosity when they are used as standardizable candles. These are potential consequences of the modeling, not demonstrated changes to supernova distance measurements or established explanations for particular stars.
