Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said he would address the dispute surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo after the team’s next match, insisting that team rules apply equally. Ronaldo had left Portugal’s training camp on September 30, after Jesus said he would not start him against Denmark. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons “in time”; the reports available by October 3 did not provide that fuller explanation.
What happened between Ronaldo and Portugal?
The sequence began after Ronaldo did not play in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on September 27. He warmed up but was not brought on. Jesus later said he had changed his substitution plan and regretted having Ronaldo warm up for too long without using him.
On September 30, Jesus said Ronaldo would not start Portugal’s next match, against Denmark. Later that day, Ronaldo left the national team’s camp after Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Portugal then beat Denmark 4-2 on October 1.
The timing connects Ronaldo’s departure to the selection news, but it does not establish his motive. In a statement reported by the Associated Press, Ronaldo said: “Following the national team coach’s news conference, and after a conversation with the president of the Portuguese football federation, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp.” He added that he would tell the Portuguese people the truth about his reasons “in time.”

What did Jorge Jesus say after the Denmark match?
After Portugal’s 4-2 win, Jesus said he would not avoid the subject and would explain further after Portugal’s next game. Hindustan Times quoted him as saying: “I will explain everything after the last game. I have many years in football and I know that I did nothing that should have caused things to go differently.” He also said: “After the Norway game, we will talk about this subject. I will not HIDE or run away from it.”
Those comments were a promise to discuss the matter later, not a full explanation of Ronaldo’s departure. Jesus also praised Ronaldo’s standing in the game, saying: “Nobody can take away what Cristiano represents. He’s an icon and that’s not in question.”

What did Jesus mean by “the rules are the same for everyone”?
Jesus said that players can have different levels of status while remaining subject to the same team rules. Hindustan Times quoted him: “I still think exactly the same way: there are players with status. That much is crystal clear. But I’ll say it again: the rules are the same for everyone.” Portuguese news agency Lusa reported his words in Portuguese: “O estatuto é uma coisa, as regras são iguais para todos” (“Status is one thing; the rules are the same for everyone”).
Jesus also defended his authority over selection. The Associated Press quoted him saying: “No player will ever make a decision for me.” His comments distinguish Ronaldo’s stature from the coach’s responsibility to decide who plays.

Was there a feud, or did Ronaldo refuse to train?
Jesus denied that there was a feud and said Ronaldo had not refused to train. Those are Jesus’s descriptions of the situation; they do not amount to Ronaldo’s detailed account of why he left. The reports available by October 3 did not establish a fuller public explanation from Ronaldo or a subsequent detailed account from Jesus.
Jesus did acknowledge a problem with how the Norway substitution unfolded: he said he changed his plan and regretted asking Ronaldo to warm up without bringing him on. That admission concerned the handling of the match, while Jesus maintained that he controlled Portugal’s lineup.
