Joining Korean Company Data: DART Codes, LEIs, and the Limits of Name Matching

DART identifiers and LEIs serve different purposes. Find the right DART record, check GLEIF reference data, and document what supports each match.

To connect Korean company records with global entity data, start with the strongest identifier available and confirm that the records describe the same kind of entity. DART identifiers and Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) serve different purposes; neither should be treated as a universal Korean-company ID. Use official identifiers or a documented crosswalk where possible, and treat name similarity as a way to find candidates—not proof of a match.

What DART identifiers and LEIs identify

DART is a disclosure system

DART is the Financial Supervisory Service’s electronic disclosure system: listed companies and other filers submit disclosure documents, which users can retrieve online. Its company overview provides identifying and descriptive information for companies in DART’s records. That makes DART useful for finding disclosure registrants, but it is not a universal global registry of every Korean legal entity. DART’s system overview

A DART company code or other identifier belongs to a DART record. Do not assume, without documentation, that it identifies every possible legal entity, security, branch, parent or subsidiary in the same way—or that it has a direct LEI equivalent. Preserve the code supplied by your source dataset, along with the field definition and source, rather than relabeling it as a general company ID.

An LEI is a separate global identifier

An LEI is a 20-character identifier for a legal entity participating in financial transactions. Its associated reference data is provided through LEI-issuing organizations and includes information used to identify and describe the entity. GLEIF’s concatenated files gather that issuer-provided reference data, are freely available, and provide an audit trail to the original issuer data. GLEIF’s concatenated-file documentation

An LEI and a DART identifier therefore differ in scope and source. An entity may have records in both systems, but the existence of one does not establish a corresponding record in the other. The available official material does not establish universal LEI coverage for Korean companies or a maintained official DART-to-LEI crosswalk.

  1. Choose the best-known key. If you have a business registration number or corporate registration number, search using it rather than relying only on a name.
  2. Use a name search to discover candidates. Try the company’s official name; a partial name can help when spelling or spacing is uncertain.
  3. Open the company details and verify the record. Check available identifying information before recording its DART code. Keep the original search key, the code, and the source page or dataset together.

DART’s public guidance documents these lookup fields, but it does not, in the materials cited here, establish the current API or download schema or stability guarantees for every code field. Confirm field semantics against the actual dataset or interface you use.

Why a matching name is not enough

Two records with similar names may refer to different entities; the same entity may also appear under different spellings, scripts, legal-form suffixes or former names. Hangul-to-Latin transliteration and changes over time add further uncertainty. A name match is a candidate relationship, not evidence by itself that two records represent the same legal entity.

A shared name alone cannot establish identity.

A practical workflow for connecting DART records to LEIs

1. Define what each record represents

Before joining records, decide whether your target is a legal entity, a DART disclosure registrant, a listed security or issuer record, a branch, or a parent or subsidiary. These concepts can overlap, but a join that treats them as interchangeable can attach an LEI to the wrong organizational level.

2. Preserve and test official identifiers

Start with the strongest identifiers supplied by the records. For a DART company-overview search, the documented keys include business registration number and corporate registration number as well as company name. Preserve each source’s original identifiers and record what each field means. Do not infer that a DART code and an LEI are equivalent simply because both appear in company data.

3. Check GLEIF for an LEI and its reference data

When the entity may have an LEI, look it up in GLEIF’s index or files. Retain the LEI’s status and relevant reference fields, such as legal name and jurisdiction or registration details, together with the data’s update context. GLEIF says its concatenated files are updated daily; the page describes its Golden Copy and delta files as available in ready-to-use form three times daily. These are distinct file-update details, so note which file and retrieval time your process used. GLEIF’s concatenated-file documentation

4. Use a crosswalk only within its documented scope

A crosswalk can provide a useful link when it covers the exact identifier pair and record types in your data. Read its inclusion and exclusion rules, identifier definitions and provenance before using it. GLEIF’s OpenCorporates ID-to-LEI factsheet is an example of a specific mapping with eligibility conditions and equivalent identifier fields; its rules apply to that mapping, not automatically to DART identifiers. GLEIF OpenCorporates ID-to-LEI factsheet, version 1.2

5. Use names to generate candidates, then corroborate

If no strong shared key or validated crosswalk is available, use name similarity to identify possible records for review. Normalize spacing or legal-form suffixes cautiously; retain original forms and consider transliterations and former names. Then compare independent attributes such as registration identifiers, representative, address, jurisdiction and temporal validity. Do not convert a high name-similarity score into a confirmed identity without supporting evidence.

6. Record the evidence and match method

For each linked record, retain the source IDs, evidence fields, match method, review status and date. Distinguish deterministic identifier joins from documented crosswalk links and probabilistic name matches. If evidence is ambiguous, leave the candidate unresolved rather than silently promoting it to a fact.

Choose a matching approach by its evidence and purpose

Approach What it can establish Authority and provenance Best use and limit
DART lookup by registration identifier Finds a DART company record using a documented business or corporate registration number, when available. DART company-overview lookup. Guide Useful for locating a DART record; does not itself establish an LEI relationship.
DART lookup by company name Finds one or more records matching the entered full or partial name. DART company-overview lookup; DART cautions users to inspect same-name candidates. FAQ Useful for discovery; name similarity alone is insufficient to confirm identity.
GLEIF LEI reference data Provides LEI and associated issuer-sourced reference data where an LEI record exists. LEI-issuing organizations, with an audit trail described by GLEIF. Documentation Useful for global LEI reference data; does not imply every Korean company has an LEI or identify a DART record automatically.
Documented crosswalk Links identifiers only as defined by that mapping’s fields and eligibility rules. Mapping provider and its stated criteria; the cited factsheet covers OpenCorporates IDs and LEIs. Factsheet Useful when the identifier pair and record types match its documented scope; do not transfer its rules to DART.
Name-based candidate match Identifies records that may refer to the same entity, but does not prove identity. Inferred from the names and any corroborating fields your process records. Useful when stronger keys are unavailable; require independent evidence and manual review for ambiguous cases.
