Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn a TIME interview published October 15, 2026, Apple CEO John Ternus described the company’s memory-supply constraints as “absolutely a crisis” and said “all options should be on the table.” He was discussing sourcing flexibility—not announcing that Apple has selected a Chinese memory supplier. Ternus also said executive chairman Tim Cook remains available to help through his relationships while Ternus runs Apple.
What John Ternus actually said about the memory shortage
Ternus’s strongest warning was unambiguous: “The constraints in memory are absolutely a crisis,” he told TIME. He followed it with the company’s sourcing position: “So our fundamental belief is that all options should be on the table.”

The wording matters. The interview addresses reports that Apple had tested memory chips made by a Chinese company, but it does not confirm a purchase, an approved supplier, or a final qualification decision. “All options” describes a willingness to examine alternatives as supply tightens; it is not evidence that Chinese components are shipping in Apple products.

TIME places the comments in a wider global shortage that has increased component costs and delayed production schedules. Memory is one of several parts Apple obtains from outside partners, alongside displays and modems. A constrained market can therefore affect both the bill of materials and the timing of new-device production, even when Apple’s own design and software work is progressing on schedule.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
- Cost pressure: Scarcity can raise what Apple pays for memory and complicate product-margin planning.
- Timeline risk: Limited allocations can delay manufacturing or force changes in launch volumes.
- Supplier flexibility: Evaluating more sources can reduce dependence on any single supply route, but each candidate still has to meet Apple’s technical, security and reliability requirements.
Ternus did not provide a supplier list, component quantities, qualification timetable or forecast for when the constraints will ease.
Did Apple confirm it is buying Chinese memory chips?
No. The interview supports only a narrower conclusion: Apple has considered, or is willing to consider, a broad range of supply options. It does not establish that a Chinese memory maker has won business or that a particular chip is in an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
That distinction is especially important because qualification is a multi-stage process. A chip can be tested without being approved for mass production, and an approved source can still be limited to a specific product, region or production period. Until Apple or a later, authoritative filing identifies a supplier and a shipping product, claims of confirmed Chinese memory procurement remain unverified.

How Ternus and Tim Cook divide the leadership roles
Ternus became Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, after 25 years at the company. TIME presents him as an engineering- and design-focused successor to Cook. Cook remains executive chairman, and Ternus described the continuing relationship this way: “He has great relationships and loves Apple. So wherever he can help, he is happy to help.”

| Leadership dimension | John Ternus | Tim Cook |
|---|---|---|
| Current position | Apple CEO since September 1, 2026 | Executive chairman |
| Emphasis in the interview | Engineering, design and product differentiation | High-level government and international relationships |
| Supply-chain connection | Sets product and sourcing priorities while managing the company day to day | Can assist through established relationships when those connections are useful |
| Operating style portrayed by TIME | Product-led and technically focused | Relationship-led and externally engaged |
This is a division of emphasis rather than a clean handoff. Ternus’s comments portray Cook as an active resource, while day-to-day authority has moved to the new CEO.
What the interview reveals about Apple’s make-versus-buy strategy
Apple still relies on specialist partners for selected components, including screens, memory and modems. Ternus defended that model rather than promising to bring every part in-house: “There’s not really a goal that we have to make every single thing in a product. We make the things where we can really bring differentiation.”
That principle also shapes Apple’s artificial-intelligence strategy. The redesigned Siri launched in the United States in September 2026 using an Apple model that leverages Google’s Gemini technology. Ternus’s argument is that Apple’s advantage comes from combining the device, operating system and a user’s personal context into useful, integrated experiences—not from manufacturing or training every underlying component itself.
Apple’s scale raises the stakes. TIME reports more than 2.5 billion active Apple devices and nearly half a trillion dollars in annual revenue. At that size, a memory disruption can affect a very large installed base and a wide product pipeline, while a decision to qualify another supplier can have significant security, logistics and geopolitical consequences.

Where the iPhone Duo fits into the discussion
The interview also describes the iPhone Duo, Apple’s foldable phone and its most radical iPhone design change since 2007. It starts at $1,999 and opens from a passport-size phone into a tablet-like device.
| Duo detail | What TIME reports | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Displays | Inner and outer screens | Supports phone use when closed and a larger workspace when open |
| Outer surface | Custom polymer surface | Represents a material choice specific to a foldable design |
| Hinge | More than 100 tiny interior precision components | Adds mechanical complexity and more potential durability considerations |
| Starting price | $1,999 and up | Places the product in a premium tier and limits its mass-market reach |
The price creates adoption risk, particularly because buyers must also assess hinge durability, screen protection, crease visibility, software adaptation to the larger display and integration with Apple’s wider ecosystem. The interview supplies product architecture and pricing, not an independent durability or performance review, so those questions remain open.
What is established—and what remains unknown
- Established: Ternus called the memory constraints “absolutely a crisis.”
- Established: Apple says every sourcing option should be considered as the shortage affects cost and production planning.
- Established: Cook is executive chairman and remains available to help through his relationships.
- Established: The iPhone Duo is a $1,999-and-up foldable with inner and outer displays and a hinge containing more than 100 precision components.
- Not established: A confirmed Chinese memory supplier, an approved chip, a purchase order, or a shipping product that uses one.
- Not established: A final timetable for the memory shortage, detailed Duo durability results or adoption levels.
The practical takeaway is that Apple is responding to a real supply constraint with a broad sourcing posture while keeping its product strategy centered on areas where it believes it can differentiate. Ternus’s first major public comments as CEO show an emphasis on engineering choices, but they also preserve Cook’s value as a senior relationship-builder.
