Illumio announced on October 1, 2026, that John Kindervag and a group of cybersecurity practitioners had released Cyber Resilience at Machine Speed: The Zero Trust Model for the AI Era. Illumio describes it as a free download and a practitioner-contributed book about applying Zero Trust principles as AI, agentic systems and non-human identities reshape security challenges.
What the book is—and who contributed
This is not presented as a solo-authored technical manual. Kindervag assembled chapters from cybersecurity practitioners and leaders, saying in Illumio’s announcement, “A wise person once told me there are no great books, only great chapters.” The announcement names the following contributors and describes their roles:
- Dr. Chase Cunningham, associated with Forrester’s Zero Trust eXtended framework.
- Clint Bruce, founder of Trident Response Group.
- George Finney, author of Project Zero Trust and CISO for The University of Texas System.
- Jason Garbis, Cloud Security Alliance Zero Trust Working Group co-chair and Zero Trust author.
- Jonathan Flack, contributor to Cloud Security Alliance Zero Trust initiatives.
- Lieuwe Jan Koning, ON2IT co-founder and CTO.
- Rich Mogull, Cloud Security Alliance Chief Analyst.
- Michelle Savage, co-author of Agentic AI + Zero Trust.
- Don Yeske, former Navy CTO and DHS cyber leader.
- Josh Woodruff, Agentic Trust Framework creator and Cloud Security Alliance working group co-chair.
- Tony Scott, former U.S. federal CIO.
These affiliations and role descriptions are those given by Illumio in its release announcement. Books in Cyber’s 2026 Volume I listing also lists the title under Kindervag (Books in Cyber listing).
What it says about Zero Trust and AI-era security
Illumio says the book follows a five-step Zero Trust model and addresses AI, agentic systems and non-human identities. Its release highlights verification, least privilege, segmentation, policy-based controls and containment. The intended work for readers includes identifying critical assets, turning business needs into enforceable policies and limiting the impact of a breach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The publisher’s official preview further describes discussion of segmentation through major-breach examples, policy questions that connect business needs to enforcement, and the role of context and relationships in security controls. Those are descriptions of the book’s subject matter, not independent evidence that any particular control will prevent or contain an attack.
The book’s framing draws a distinction between trying to keep every compromise from happening and planning for what an organization must do if an attacker gets inside. Kindervag wrote on September 8, 2026: “Cyber resilience is the ability to absorb a compromise and keep operating through it, and Zero Trust is the strategy that produces it.” That is his definition and argument, rather than a measured outcome established by the release.

Why implementation still matters
SecurityWeek’s October 1, 2026 analysis describes the book’s core argument as a case that Zero Trust can remain useful against AI-assisted attacks when correctly implemented. It also points to implementation concerns: policy engines must be accurate and adaptable, and protected against tampering. This is SecurityWeek’s analysis of the book’s position, not a consensus finding or a reported test result (SecurityWeek analysis).
That caveat matters because the ideas described by the publisher depend on how organizations identify important assets, express business intent in policy and enforce least-privilege access and segmentation. The release and preview explain what the book intends to cover; they do not quantify risk reduction or demonstrate a specific security outcome.
