Munster academy fly-half Charlie O’Shea was selected to make his first senior competitive start against the Vodacom Bulls at Thomond Park on 3 October 2026. Veteran out-half JJ Hanrahan, named among the replacements, backed O’Shea and fellow young fly-half Tom Wood, saying: “They’re both going to have long careers.” The match was scheduled for later that day and had not yet been played as of the Irish Examiner’s 2 October report.
What Hanrahan said about O’Shea
Hanrahan said O’Shea and Wood had been excellent when brought into Munster’s senior environment. He pointed to their Ireland U20 campaigns, their energy and their eagerness to learn. His confidence was an endorsement based on what he had seen, not a guarantee of future selection or results.

He also described how Munster’s senior players help younger out-halves examine their decisions. “We all just go around the computer, sit down together, talk about pictures that we see,” he said. Hanrahan explained that the group uses walkthroughs, video, written notes, images and PDFs, recognising that players learn in different ways.
Hanrahan said development is happening at a faster pace for young players: “I think the whole thing is that everything is happening quicker for younger players now.” He framed that as a change in the game, rather than a criticism of the coaching he received.

Why O’Shea was selected to start
The Bulls fixture offered O’Shea his first senior competitive start after two early opportunities: he started and scored a try in Munster’s pre-season match against Leicester Tigers on 18 September, then came on for 11 minutes in the URC opener against Glasgow. The Irish Examiner reported that Munster made 11 changes from the side beaten 26–20 by Glasgow, with O’Shea selected at fly-half alongside scrum-half Craig Casey.
Hanrahan was named on the replacements bench. Tom Wood was another young out-half in the conversation, but RTÉ reported in September that he had undergone shoulder surgery and was expected to miss months. That is dated injury context, not a current medical update or a definitive statement about his availability beyond that report.

Who is Charlie O’Shea?
O’Shea joined Munster’s provincial academy in August 2026. Before that, he played at UCC and captained Christian Brothers College (CBC) to the Munster Schools Senior Cup title in 2025. He also represented Ireland U20 and was selected at No. 10 for its Junior World Championship opener against England in June 2026.

Munster were scheduled to host the Vodacom Bulls at Thomond Park on Saturday, 3 October 2026, with a 19:45 kickoff listed on the club’s official fixtures page. The selection and Hanrahan’s comments were reported by the Irish Examiner on 2 October 2026. At that report’s publication, the match was still to come, so no result or account of O’Shea’s performance is included here.
