A YouTuber’s mercury-filled speaker cable produced barely any audible difference in his comparison with copper—but the sighted, uncontrolled test does not prove that all speaker cables sound the same. It does make one point harder to ignore: a conductor’s prestige or material label alone is not proof of better sound. For a real setup, cable length, cross-section, resistance and fit matter more than claims built around exotic metal.
What the mercury speaker-cable comparison showed
According to Headphonesty’s 2026 account, the YouTube builder pierogi engineering filled four clear tubes with mercury, capped them and used them as speaker conductors, then compared the setup by ear with ordinary copper cable. The report says the bottles were dated August 30, 1983. The builder expected mercury to sound duller or warmer, but described any difference as very small and questioned whether bias affected his impression.
That is a report of one listener’s impression, not a controlled demonstration. The comparison was sighted: the builder had made and installed the cables, and the visible labels indicated which cable was connected. The video did not show level matching. Those conditions cannot separate an actual cable effect from expectation or a small level change, and they cannot tell us what other listeners or systems would reveal.
What the meter readings mean
Headphonesty reports display readings of 0.07–0.08 ohms for the copper cable and 0.22–0.23 ohms for one mercury tube. The difference between the displayed readings was about 0.15 ohms. These were two-wire multimeter readings near the meter’s low range, where test-lead and contact resistance matter; they do not independently establish the precise resistance of the complete speaker circuit. The report estimates that two tubes would likely be used per speaker circuit, implying roughly 0.30 ohms of added resistance, but that figure is an inference from the build, not a direct measurement of a complete circuit.

Does “57× worse than copper” mean a finished cable is 57× worse?
No. The 57× comparison in Headphonesty’s account refers to mercury’s conductivity relative to copper, not to a universal multiplier for a finished cable’s resistance or audibility. Conductor resistance also depends on length and cross-sectional area. A complete cable’s electrical behavior depends on its construction, including geometry, rather than metallurgy alone.
The same report puts silver’s conductivity advantage over copper at about 6 percent at room temperature, and says a 3 percent increase in copper conductor diameter closes that stated material-property gap. These are material-property comparisons, not results from a listening test of silver wire. The mercury experiment did not test silver, so it cannot directly settle whether listeners can hear a copper-versus-silver difference.

When can speaker cable affect sound?
Cable is part of an electrical circuit, so its properties can affect the signal. But that does not mean every audible claim about wire is established, or that small differences in conductor material automatically translate into a meaningful difference in a listening room.
Very thin or high-resistance cable can matter
Headphonesty also recounts a historical test by research psychiatrist Laurence Greenhill. As reported by the site—not independently confirmed here—the test used 11 listeners and a double-blind ABX comparator. Every panelist identified a 30-foot, 24-gauge cable with 1.8-ohm resistance when pink noise was used; the report notes a measured 1.25 dB response dip that may explain why listeners described it as duller. In another comparison, 16-gauge lamp cord reportedly measured 0.24 ohms against 0.09 ohms for Monster Cable, with a reported insertion-loss difference of 0.16 dB. The difference was detected with pink noise but not with choral music. These reported results concern specific cable and test conditions, not every installation.

Other comparisons have limits too
SoundGuys’ coathanger test offers a separate comparison, but its authors limit the takeaway to cables of appropriate specifications in the test. It does not establish that any arbitrary metal object is suitable for audio equipment.
Benchmark Media Systems lead engineer John Siau argues that cable errors are normally well below audibility and advises prioritizing other audio-system components. That is a named vendor’s position, not a neutral consensus statement. Likewise, QED’s manufacturer report says geometry and electrical properties matter and reports that, in its tested cable group, geometry and dielectric materials were generally more significant than conductor metallurgy. Treat both claims in light of their sources and scope.

How to choose cable for a real speaker run
Start with the installation, not a claim that a particular metal has a special sound. Compare the run’s length, conductor cross-section or gauge, total loop resistance, and whether the cable and its terminations fit the speaker and amplifier connections. QED identifies resistance, inductance, capacitance and geometry as cable properties that can influence behavior; no single material label resolves all of them.
- Length: account for the full route from amplifier to speaker and back through the circuit when considering conductor resistance.
- Cross-section or gauge: a thicker conductor has more cross-sectional area and can reduce resistance for a given length.
- Total loop resistance: consider the complete speaker circuit, not just a material’s conductivity figure or a reading from one cable segment.
- Termination and fit: choose cable that can be connected reliably to the equipment’s terminals without improvised or unsuitable connectors.
A suitable copper speaker wire selected for the actual run is a practical choice. The evidence here does not establish that paying extra for silver or boutique metallurgy will produce an audible improvement, nor does it prove that all cables are interchangeable.

Do not recreate the mercury cable
Mercury is not a DIY cable material. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says metallic mercury mainly causes health effects when its vapor is inhaled. EPA guidance specifically warns against using a vacuum on a mercury spill because it can put mercury into the air, and against using a broom because it can break mercury into smaller droplets and spread them. If mercury has spilled, follow current EPA mercury-spill guidance and contact local health or fire authorities rather than improvising cleanup.
