John Cena says he will not wrestle or physically perform for WWE again. In a TODAY Show interview, as quoted in an October 6, 2026 report, he said he and WWE agreed it was time to step away at age 49 after what he called 23 years of “physical service.” He may still appear for WWE in non-wrestling roles.
What did John Cena say about returning to the ring?
In the TODAY Show interview as quoted by IGN, Cena said: “I’m not going to perform again physically. There is no chance that I’ll perform again physically. And the WWE and I had a conversation about that, and we thought that at 49 it was the right time to step away. I put 23 years of physical service into the business.”

Does that mean Cena will never appear for WWE again?
No. The report distinguishes wrestling from non-wrestling work: Cena may return in other roles, including as a WWE ambassador. It also describes a John Cena Classic planned for December, a live event built around nostalgia for his WWE character where the audience decides the champion. These are reported plans, not a guarantee that every appearance or event will proceed as described.

How long was Cena with WWE?
The report describes Cena’s WWE spell as almost 25 years. His quoted phrase, “23 years of physical service,” is his own description of that physical work. The figures refer to different things and should not be treated as contradictory measurements of the same tenure.
What had Cena said before his final match?
According to the October 6 report, Cena spoke to Good Morning America in June, before his final match, and said, “There is no way.” The report says he then avoided speaking in absolutes because he did not want to close an opportunity, while also saying he had made a promise to fans and did not want to disrespect them by returning for selfish gain. This is historical context relayed by the current report, rather than an independently checked transcript of that interview.
