In Nova Sociedade, a riverine Arapium village in Brazil’s Pará state, solar-powered pumps now fill water tanks for 36 families. Separate household solar-and-battery kits provide lighting and charge small devices, reducing reliance on costly, unreliable diesel generation.
How solar power is helping Nova Sociedade prepare for drought
Nova Sociedade sits along the Arapiuns River, its route to the outside world. During the historic 2024 drought, residents walked as far as 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) to find water. Community leader Tiago Silva recalled: “At daybreak, our struggle would begin,” he told the Associated Press.

In June 2026, solar panels began powering pumps that fill storage tanks with water for all 36 village families. Saúde e Alegria supplied the system; the organization had equipped 29 other communities with similar water technology, according to AP. The report does not specify this installation’s capacity, pump model, water yield, or cost.
The solar pumps are a practical way to help secure water access, not a way to prevent drought or guarantee supply under every condition. The AP report says El Niño is expected to affect the year and can worsen Amazon drought, but it does not give a quantified forecast for Nova Sociedade. The community’s installations are preparation for water and electricity stresses.

Solar water pumps and household kits do different jobs
Nova Sociedade’s water system and household solar kits are separate installations. One pumps water into shared storage tanks; the other provides basic electricity in individual homes.
| Installation | What it does | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Community water system | Runs pumps that fill storage tanks | Started operating in June 2026; supplies water to all 36 families. Capacity, cost, and water yield are not stated in the AP report. |
| Household solar kits | Provide electricity for lights and small devices | Separate systems donated by Schneider Electric through Saúde e Alegria in September 2026; include batteries for nighttime lighting and can charge phones and other small devices. Capacity and cost are not stated in the AP report. |
These kits address basic household needs; they are not described as powering the community pumps. Nor does the AP report provide measured reliability, output, or emissions reductions for either installation.
Why residents are moving away from diesel
Before the solar systems, Nova Sociedade relied on diesel generators for basic electricity. AP describes the fuel as costly and polluting and the generators’ power as limited and unreliable. Getting fuel also requires a nearly three-hour boat trip to Santarém.

For a remote settlement, that fuel journey is part of the cost and difficulty of keeping electricity available. Solar can supply power without regular diesel deliveries for the uses described, though the report does not quantify savings or establish how the systems perform over time.
Caetano Scannavino, an environmentalist and manager of Saúde e Alegria, described the broader rationale: “This technology uses the power of the sun and can replace other ways of generating electricity that often require clearing the forest or burning fuel, the very practices driving global warming,” he told AP.
Other solar uses are expanding access to essential services
Solar power in the region is also supporting services beyond household lighting and water pumping. The AP report describes a clinic using solar electricity for vaccine refrigeration, telemedicine, and basic equipment; a school that replaced a noisy diesel generator and gained refrigeration; and a solar-and-battery system at an açaí processor intended to address production constraints associated with diesel power.

- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
At Sao Benedito School in Surucua, principal Rosenilce Cruz said after the generator was replaced: “Today, all you hear are the children and the birds,” she told AP. Reliable electricity also changed food storage: “Today, our children’s meals are no longer based on canned foods but on fresh sources of protein. We now have a place to store that food because electricity is available 24 hours a day,” she said.
The examples show that off-grid solar can serve different local needs, but they are not interchangeable systems. Water pumping, household lighting, refrigeration, communications, and processing require equipment designed for their particular use.
How large is the off-grid electricity challenge?
Brazil’s national electricity access figures obscure gaps in remote areas. AP reports that more than 99% of Brazil’s 214 million residents had electricity access in the 2022 census, while about 1 million people in the Amazon region still lacked access, citing the Brazilian nonprofit Institute for Energy and Environment (IEMA).

AP also reports that off-grid installations in remote Amazon areas grew from 105 in 2020 to more than 11,000 in 2022 and exceeded 100,000 by 2026, citing official data. IEMA researcher Fabio Galdino dos Santos told AP: “It’s fair to say that nearly all of these are solar installations.” These figures are reported by AP; the underlying system-count data and IEMA estimate are not independently reproduced in the linked report.

Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy says Decree 11,648/2023 established the Energias da Amazônia program. Its stated purpose is to reduce diesel use in the region’s electricity generation and cut greenhouse gas emissions by substituting renewable sources, while maintaining the quality and security of supply for more than 3.1 million people served by isolated systems. The ministry lists auctions and authorizations, supply-solution contracting, and CCC reimbursement mechanisms among the program’s implementation tools.
The program’s goals describe national policy, not a measured result from Nova Sociedade. The local AP account does not quantify that village’s emissions reduction, fuel savings, or power generation.

What community solar projects can include
Other organizations’ projects illustrate how off-grid systems can be adapted to different priorities. Amazon Conservation Team’s 2018 report describes work with Indigenous partners in Colombia’s middle and lower Caquetá River basins: communities selected pico-PV systems for lighting and one phone- or radio-charging point per household. The organization said 328 solar lamps delivered in less than a year benefited 1,776 people. Those are historical project figures, not current deployment totals.
Amazon Watch’s Power to the Protectors program combines solar with satellite internet and radio, trains community members in maintenance, and describes local ownership of the hardware. Its page says a project with FECONAU and Empowered by Light reached 15 communities and benefited more than 6,000 people in Peru. Amazon Watch presents these as its own program claims. Its approach emphasizes co-design with Indigenous partners so installations address locally identified needs.
