Jio Platforms is exploring ways to take its proprietary unlicensed-band radio (UBR) technology beyond India, but no overseas UBR deal or launch is confirmed in the available reporting. Moneycontrol, citing people familiar with the matter, reports that Jio is evaluating local-operator partnerships in Europe, East Asia and Africa. Reliance Industries’ FY2025-26 annual report separately states that Jio plans to offer proprietary network technologies in selected international markets with local operators.
What Jio’s UBR technology does
UBR is Jio’s proprietary point-to-multipoint radio technology that uses unlicensed spectrum to connect premises with fixed broadband. It is intended to extend service where bringing fibre directly to homes or businesses may be difficult or costly. Reliance describes the result as “fibre-like” fixed broadband connectivity; that is the company’s characterization, not a claim that wireless and fibre are equivalent in every respect.

In its FY2025-26 annual report, Reliance says UBR has increased Jio’s market reach and capacity to connect premises, with bandwidth of up to 1 Gbps. This is a company capability statement, not an independently measured speed result or a guarantee for each connection. The reviewed sources do not quantify UBR’s cost savings against fibre.
What is known about Jio taking UBR abroad
Moneycontrol reported on October 7, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter, that Jio Platforms is evaluating partnerships with incumbent operators in Europe, East Asia and Africa. The report describes managed services, revenue sharing and joint ventures as possible arrangements. These are reported possibilities, not confirmed agreements: the report does not identify a contracted overseas customer, a selected commercial model, launch date or deal value.

Reliance’s annual report supports the broader international direction, but not those specific regions or deal structures. It says that after developing its 5G and fixed wireless access (FWA) stack at scale in India, Jio would provide proprietary network technologies in selected international markets in partnership with local operators as a managed-services provider. At a 2025 Reliance event, chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani also said, “And five, Jio will expand its operations outside India with our own technology to people around the world.” That statement signals ambition; it does not confirm a UBR contract or deployment.
UBR is one part of a wider network offering
The annual report describes a broader technology portfolio for potential international partnerships. Alongside UBR-based FWA, it names Jio’s 5G core, cloud-native radio access network (RAN) and operations and business support systems (OSS/BSS). That leaves open whether an overseas operator might use UBR alone or take a wider managed-network package; the sources do not describe a specific offer or customer requirement.

Jio’s company page lists UBR among its proprietary network capabilities. It also reports 27.1 million JioFiber and JioAirFiber subscribers combined as of March 31, 2026. That is a combined fixed-broadband figure, not a count of UBR users.

JioBusiness markets Business Broadband Max as using next-generation AirFiber UBR technology. Its service page advertises speeds up to 1 Gbps, Wi-Fi 6 and a public static IP. These are product-page specifications for the Indian service, not evidence of overseas availability or actual speeds at every location.

The example shows UBR being used in a marketed business-broadband service in India. It does not establish that UBR will replace fibre broadly, or that the Indian product specification would carry over unchanged to another country.

UBR is presented as an option for extending fixed broadband where a wired connection is hard or expensive to build. Whether it makes sense in a particular market would depend on local conditions, which the available sources do not assess country by country.

- Deployment fit: Compare the cost and practicality of extending wired broadband to the target premises with a radio-based connection. The sources provide no comparative cost or performance figures.
- Local rules and spectrum: Unlicensed-band operation still has to fit the relevant country’s regulatory and technical conditions. No country-specific licensing or spectrum analysis is provided.
- Partner and commercial model: A local operator would be central to the reported plans. Managed services, revenue sharing and joint ventures are possibilities reported by Moneycontrol, not agreed terms.
- Operational scope: A deployment could involve UBR/FWA or a wider technology package. The annual report names additional network systems, but does not specify how responsibilities, investment or revenue would be divided.
Can UBR replace fibre?
The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Jio presents UBR as a way to reach premises where fibre is difficult or costly to extend. It does not establish that UBR is a universal fibre replacement, nor does it provide independent comparisons of speed, reliability or total deployment cost. Its role would depend on the location and on the local operator’s network and commercial requirements.
