It can be worth buying—but only if you check the specific games you care about and can live with uncertainty or some setup. If an essential game is marked Unsupported, especially an online multiplayer game that depends on anti-cheat, do not assume a Proton setting or community workaround will make it work. Read the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details before choosing the Deck.
What Steam Deck compatibility labels actually mean
Valve’s labels describe reviewed compatibility, not a simple promise that a game will or will not launch. The status is a current assessment: Valve says reviews are ongoing and ratings can change as the Deck and games receive updates.

| Label | What Valve says it means | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works well on Steam Deck by default. Valve describes it as working “great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | The strongest indication of a straightforward experience, though game updates can still matter. |
| Playable | The game works, but may require manual configuration. | Check the compatibility details to see what adjustment or inconvenience to expect. |
| Unsupported | The game is “currently not considered playable on Steam Deck.” | Treat it as a serious risk, not a prediction that every future version will fail. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game. | There is no Valve compatibility assessment to rely on; seek current, title-specific evidence. |
Valve’s review considers more than whether a title launches. Its criteria cover controls and controller icons, display resolution and legibility, how smoothly the game handles warnings or launchers, and whether the game and its middleware work through Proton. A game can therefore miss the mark because of an awkward launcher, unreadable text, a control issue, a codec or other middleware, anti-cheat, or a functional failure. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page explains the categories and review criteria.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to check the games you plan to play
- Make a must-play list. Include the particular games and the features you need, such as online multiplayer, rather than evaluating compatibility in the abstract.
- Open each game’s Steam Store page. Read the Steam Deck Compatibility section and its detail panel, not just the badge. Valve says the panel explains which Verified requirements a game does not meet.
- Decide whether each issue is tolerable. A launcher that needs touchscreen navigation or a controller adjustment may be acceptable. A title that is not functional, or whose required online service cannot run because anti-cheat is not enabled for Proton, can make the game a poor fit.
- For an existing Steam game that fails, try the supported troubleshooting path. In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and try a current Proton version. Steam Support also notes that Steam may download the Windows build if only the Linux version was installed. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee of functionality, performance, updates, or online access. See Steam Support’s Steam Deck software information and troubleshooting guide.
- Check again when the game or system changes. Updates to the game, Proton, or SteamOS can affect the experience, and Valve’s assessments can change.
Why Proton does not guarantee an unsupported game will work
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. Its ability to run a game depends on more than the game’s operating system. The game’s launcher, middleware, controls, display behavior, and online services can all affect whether it works acceptably.

Anti-cheat is a particularly important distinction for multiplayer games. Valve says Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but developers must configure or enable that support for their games. Valve also says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported. So the presence of a supported anti-cheat product does not establish that a particular game’s online mode works on Deck. Consult Valve’s Steamworks documentation on Steam Deck and Proton and the game’s own compatibility details.
You may find reports that an Unsupported or Unknown game runs for someone. Such a report can be useful evidence for that specific version and setup, but it is not a Valve guarantee and may not establish that multiplayer access works or that the result will survive updates.

When buying the Steam Deck makes sense—and when it does not
The decision depends on the exact games in your library, the features you need, and how much configuration you are willing to do. Use these checks to decide:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- More suitable: Your essential games are Verified or Playable with acceptable limitations, and you are comfortable adjusting controls or navigating a launcher when necessary.
- Higher risk: An essential game is Unsupported or Unknown, but you have current, credible evidence that the specific experience you need works and are willing to tolerate uncertainty.
- Wait or choose another setup: An essential title has no reliable current evidence of working, or its required online multiplayer depends on anti-cheat that is not enabled for Proton. Do not make the purchase on the assumption that a future fix will arrive.
If you are comparing the Deck with another way to play your games, check must-play coverage title by title, online and anti-cheat functionality, setup effort, readability and performance on the handheld display, and how dependable the compatibility evidence is. An informal workaround may stop working after an update; a current Valve rating or developer statement is a different level of evidence. No universal compatibility verdict can settle the choice for an unnamed game library.
