NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says OpenClaw points toward a future in which software agents operate physical machines, but he argues that isolation, least-privilege access and continuous oversight must come first.
What Jensen Huang said at the London event
At NVIDIA’s “Build a claw” event in London on October 15, 2026, Huang connected OpenClaw’s agentic software model with humanoid robotics and the wider field of physical AI. TechRadar’s Mike Moore reported that Huang called OpenClaw “one of the most important models” and described agentic systems as useful for coding, marketing assistance, research, laboratory work, drug discovery and engineering experiments.

NVIDIA’s GTC 2026 coverage identifies OpenClaw as an open-source project from developer Peter Steinberger. The company says it has “open sourced the operating system of agentic computers” and enables personal agents. Huang also described it as the most popular open-source project in history, a characterization attributable to him rather than an independently measured ranking.

Huang’s central analogy is that a robot supplies the physical tools while the agent remains the decision-making system inside a computer. Referring to a robot built by NVIDIA partner Humanoid, he said its motors, articulation, wheels and arms are “just tools that are used by the agent that’s sitting inside the computer.” In that model, OpenClaw is not merely a chatbot: it is an agentic control layer that could direct physical capabilities through appropriate software interfaces.

Why Huang says autonomous agents need guardrails
Huang compared unrestricted agents with early web browsers that could reach a computer’s bare metal. His proposed alternative is an isolated environment that separates the agent from the underlying operating system and hardware. He described OpenShell as “essentially another operating system inside the operating system.”
His deployment pattern has four connected parts:
- Zero-trust assumptions: treat the agent as untrusted until each requested capability is authorized.
- Minimum privileges: grant only the tools and permissions required for the task.
- Continuous monitoring: check whether the agent is following its policy while it operates.
- Isolation and escalation controls: contain the agent away from bare metal and provide a way to intervene when behavior exceeds policy.
The omelet-and-chainsaw example
Huang illustrated least privilege with a deliberately simple example: an agent asked to make an omelet needs a frying pan, not access to a chainsaw. The principle matters more when the “tools” are robot actuators, vehicles, industrial equipment or laboratory instruments. A capable model may be able to plan a task, but capability alone does not define what it should be allowed to activate.
Huang summarized the approach as “zero trust, minimum policy, continuous monitoring, contained inside an isolation system that is separated from bare metal.” He said escalation and security systems are necessary to deploy autonomous machines safely while preserving their potential.

What OpenShell and NemoClaw are supposed to do
NVIDIA presents OpenShell and NemoClaw as infrastructure for putting those principles into practice. The available descriptions establish their intended roles, not independent safety results or a certification that OpenClaw can safely operate any particular robot.
| Component | Role described by NVIDIA | Why it matters for robotics |
|---|---|---|
| OpenClaw | Open-source agentic computer and personal-agent layer | Provides the software agent that can plan and invoke tools |
| OpenShell | Secure runtime and isolation layer | Separates agent execution from the host system and bare metal |
| NemoClaw | Policy enforcement, network guardrails and privacy routing | Controls what the agent may do, where it may connect and how data is routed |
NVIDIA says NemoClaw and OpenShell could become a policy engine for software-as-a-service companies. That is the company’s stated direction, not evidence that every deployment already has uniform policies, monitoring or escalation behavior.
Can OpenClaw safely control robots now?
The statements support a direction, not a safety guarantee. Neither the event report nor NVIDIA’s GTC material supplies an independent benchmark, incident-rate study, regulator finding or validation showing that OpenClaw can safely control robots in general. They describe safeguards NVIDIA says should surround autonomous agents and an ecosystem being built around physical AI.

For a real robot, safety therefore depends on the complete system: the model, tool permissions, runtime isolation, network policy, privacy routing, monitoring, human escalation path and the robot’s own hardware and control software. Treating OpenClaw by itself as a guarantee of safe motion or safe decision-making would go beyond the evidence available.
NVIDIA’s broader physical-AI stack
NVIDIA’s GTC material places OpenClaw within a larger set of model families called the Nemotron Coalition:
- Nemotron: language and reasoning.
- Cosmos: world models and vision.
- Isaac GR00T: general-purpose robotics.
- Alpamayo: autonomous driving.
- BioNeMo: biology and chemistry.
- Earth-2: weather and climate.
For physical AI partnerships, NVIDIA names automakers BYD, Hyundai, Nissan and Geely, vehicle deployments with Uber, and industrial-robotics collaborations with ABB, Universal Robots and KUKA. Those relationships show the breadth of NVIDIA’s platform strategy; they do not establish that OpenClaw is deployed across all of those systems.

The scale claims behind the strategy
NVIDIA said in 2026 that $150 billion had been invested into venture startups and that computing demand had increased one million times over the previous few years. It also projected at least $1 trillion in revenue from 2025 through 2027. These are NVIDIA’s corporate statements and forecasts, not measurements of OpenClaw’s robotics performance.

NVIDIA says attendees at Build-a-Claw could run a customized OpenClaw agent either on cloud compute or on local accelerated hardware brought on an NVIDIA DGX Spark or a GeForce RTX laptop. That makes those two categories the clearest practical starting points for experimentation without assuming that a consumer setup is ready to drive a physical robot.

NVIDIA also lists up to 4,000 TOPS of local AI compute and 96 GB of GPU memory for RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell workstation editions. “Up to” describes the maximum specified for those workstation editions; it is not a claim that every GeForce laptop or DGX Spark configuration provides those figures.

What Huang’s message means for deployment decisions
Huang’s argument is not that robotics should wait for a perfect model. It is that the control layer must be designed alongside the agent. A deployment that gives an agent broad machine access without isolation, narrowly scoped permissions, monitoring and escalation does not match the pattern he outlined.
OpenClaw supplies the agentic idea; OpenShell and NemoClaw represent NVIDIA’s proposed runtime and policy mechanisms; Isaac GR00T and related systems address the physical-AI side. Whether that stack can meet a particular robot’s safety requirements remains a system-engineering question that must be demonstrated for the hardware, software and operating environment involved.
