Jellyfin is the stronger fit if “true hardware ownership” means running your own server and keeping its user accounts local. Its documentation says Jellyfin is self-hosted, its users are local, and login does not send information or metadata to remote servers. Plex still supports personal-media streaming on your home network without a subscription, but its current plans require an eligible Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass arrangement for remote personal-video streaming. Those policy differences do not establish that one service is universally better, nor do they substitute for a month-long hands-on test.
What “hardware ownership” means in this comparison
Owning the computer that stores and serves your media is not the same as controlling every part of the software experience. For this comparison, the useful questions are whether the server can be self-hosted, where its user accounts live, what conditions apply to remote viewing, and how much work the server must do to play your files.

Jellyfin describes itself as free software and an alternative to proprietary media-server products. Plex describes Plex Media Server as a way to organize a personal collection and stream it to client devices. Both address the basic job of serving a personal media library; their documented account and remote-access policies differ. Jellyfin’s introduction and Plex’s plans page describe those respective positions.
Where Jellyfin and Plex differ
| Question | Jellyfin | Plex |
|---|---|---|
| Can you run a server on your own hardware? | Yes. Jellyfin documents self-hosting and installation options across operating systems, containers, and some NAS platforms. Jellyfin documentation | Plex Media Server is presented as a server for organizing and streaming a personal collection. The plans page does not establish that every Plex feature is available without an external service or account. Plex plans |
| Where are ordinary server users managed? | Jellyfin says its users are local and that login sends no information or metadata to remote servers. Administrators can set user permissions and grant management privileges. Jellyfin user documentation | The cited plans page does not specify an equivalent local-account guarantee. It describes account and subscription conditions for remote video access. Plex plans |
| Personal video on the home network | Self-hosted playback is supported; the cited pages do not describe a subscription condition for local playback. | Plex says local-network personal-media streaming is available without a subscription. Plex plans |
| Remote personal-video streaming | Jellyfin documents a self-hosted networking model, but remote access still needs suitable network configuration. Jellyfin networking documentation | Plex’s current plans page says remote personal-video streaming requires an active Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account or a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account. Remote Watch Pass provides remote streaming access without the broader Plex Pass feature set. Plex plans |
| Does remote-video policy cover music and photos? | Not specified in the cited sources as a comparable subscription rule. | Plex says the remote-streaming subscription requirement for personal content applies to movies, TV, and video, not music or photo streaming through Plexamp and Plex Photos. Plex plans |
These are product-policy distinctions, not proof that Plex never works without an internet connection or that every Plex feature is paid. Plex also lists hardware transcoding and other features under Plex Pass; consult the current plans page for conditions because subscription details can change.

How much server hardware do you actually need?
The playback mode matters more than a generic “best media-server PC” label. If a client can play a file as-is, the server has a much lighter job than when it must convert the video.
- Direct play: Jellyfin sends the file without transcoding, which it says adds almost no extra server load.
- Remux: The server changes the container while leaving the audio and video streams untouched.
- Direct stream: The server transcodes audio but leaves the original video untouched.
- Transcode: The server converts video, a substantially more demanding task than direct play.
Jellyfin says clients provide capability profiles and the server selects output settings within its capabilities. A capable client and compatible file can avoid video conversion; incompatible codecs, bitrate constraints, or remote playback settings can make transcoding necessary. Jellyfin’s playback-mode documentation explains the distinction.

A sensible starting point for a small Jellyfin host
Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guide names an Intel N100 among its suggested integrated-graphics CPU options, alongside Intel Core i5-11400, Pentium Gold G7400, and Apple M-series or newer options. For that integrated-graphics setup, it suggests 8 GB of RAM. It also recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache, plus gigabit Ethernet or faster. These are project guidelines, not independent benchmarks or a test of any particular N100 mini PC. Jellyfin hardware-selection guidance
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe same guide suggests at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access. That is a project recommendation, not a guarantee that every remote stream will work at that speed: the media bitrate, number of simultaneous streams, client capabilities, and network conditions also matter. Media-library capacity is a separate storage decision from the SSD recommendation for system and cache files.

When to pay attention to graphics acceleration
If your clients direct-play your library, buying a GPU solely for ordinary playback may be unnecessary. If the server must transcode video—especially when converting HDR to SDR or serving multiple streams—hardware acceleration can change how demanding that workload is. Jellyfin documents support for modern GPUs from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip when the required hardware is available. Choose based on the codecs in your library and the capabilities of your clients, not an unqualified brand or CPU ranking. Jellyfin hardware-acceleration documentation
Remote access is a separate setup decision
Jellyfin calls itself fully self-hosted and independent from the Internet, but that does not mean public remote access is automatically configured or secure. Its networking documentation covers the self-hosted model, while its hardware guide advises keeping the server behind a properly configured firewall or other secure network environment. Plan network exposure deliberately rather than treating self-hosting as a security feature by itself. Jellyfin networking documentation Jellyfin hardware guidance

For Plex, decide first whether the intended viewers are on the home network or outside it: its current account conditions distinguish local streaming from remote personal-video streaming. If remote video is important, verify the current eligibility terms before choosing a setup, since plans and subscription terms can change. Plex plans
Which should you choose?
Choose Jellyfin if local control is the priority
- You want a self-hosted service whose documented server users and login data are local.
- You are comfortable configuring and maintaining your server and network.
- You want hardware requirements to follow your actual clients and playback modes rather than assume every stream needs video transcoding.
Choose Plex if its access model fits your use
- You want to stream your personal media on your local network without a subscription.
- You expect to watch personal video remotely and are willing to meet Plex’s current account or pass requirements.
- You value Plex features such as hardware transcoding, while checking the current plan terms for what is included.
Neither the cited product documentation nor the available evidence establishes comparative setup time, reliability, polish, or client compatibility. Those are reasonable things to test for your own devices, but they should not be presented as measured results without a defined setup and observations.

What a real month-long comparison would need to report
A title claiming a month of use and one clear winner implies a hands-on comparison. A defensible verdict needs the host hardware and operating system, software versions, representative media formats, client devices, local and remote network conditions, playback modes observed, and practical setup and maintenance notes. Without those details, the supported conclusion is narrower: Jellyfin is the better documented match for local account and server control, while Plex’s local-versus-remote video access terms may matter more to viewers who prioritize remote streaming.
