Both let you organize and stream your own media from a server, but they differ in licensing and which features are included without a paid tier. The best fit depends on your devices, files, network, and whether playback will require transcoding.
What Jellyfin and Emby do
Both are self-hosted media servers: you keep your media on a computer or other supported host, and use client apps to browse and play it. Emby describes this as a server-and-client setup; streaming outside your home requires appropriate network configuration. Emby does not supply movies or TV shows—you organize and stream your own personal media. Its Quick Start documentation states: “Emby is NOT a media streaming service. We do not provide access to movies or TV shows.”

Jellyfin describes itself as free software for managing and streaming a user’s media, and as an alternative to proprietary Emby and Plex. Its documentation notes that Jellyfin descended from Emby’s 3.5.2 release. That history does not make the products interchangeable today; compare the features and client support you need.
How their licensing and feature gates differ
Jellyfin says it has no premium licenses or features. Emby offers a free tier and Emby Premiere. Its Premiere feature matrix places library organization, metadata gathering, user management, and parental controls in both columns. It lists DVR/Live TV, downloads and sync, hardware-accelerated transcoding, and HDR tone mapping during transcoding as Premiere features.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Those distinctions matter if you depend on one of the gated capabilities. Review Emby’s current matrix for your specific use case, and check its current pricing and terms directly; the documentation does not establish a price comparison here. Jellyfin’s no-premium-license model may be the deciding factor if you want to avoid feature gates, but confirm that its current apps support the devices you own.
Playback and transcoding: your files and clients matter
Both servers can transcode—convert media during playback when a client cannot play the original file as-is. Direct playback can avoid that conversion. A transcode may be needed when the file’s format, resolution, bitrate, or other constraints do not suit the client or available network conditions.

Jellyfin explains that clients send playback profiles describing supported codecs, resolutions, bitrates, and constraints. Emby says apps generally choose playback settings using network performance, media information, device capabilities, and configuration. So a server’s workload depends on the media and the playback setup, not just which product you choose. Emby’s transcoding documentation describes those factors; neither product’s documentation establishes a like-for-like performance winner.
Hardware acceleration and server requirements
Hardware acceleration can use supported graphics hardware or platform features to help with transcoding. It is relevant when your playback actually requires transcoding and your host has compatible hardware; it is not a universal requirement for a media server. Do not buy a discrete GPU on the assumption that every library needs one.

Jellyfin’s transcoding guide covers supported methods involving modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip hardware, subject to the required hardware being available. Emby’s hardware acceleration overview documents different methods by operating system: Nvidia, Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, and DXVA on Windows; Nvidia, VA-API, and Intel Quick Sync on Linux. Check the exact host, operating system, and acceleration method before selecting or upgrading hardware.
Emby’s system requirements say needs vary with file formats, clients, and available bandwidth, and that real-time transcoding is CPU-intensive. There is no universal hardware or storage specification here that fits every library. An existing always-on computer or NAS may be enough; the right storage capacity depends on your own media collection.

Installation options and remote playback
Emby lists Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, Docker, NAS devices, and other installation targets. Jellyfin’s documentation links to installation paths for Windows, macOS, Linux, containers, Synology, and TrueNAS SCALE. Use the current instructions for the specific platform you plan to host on: Emby installation and Jellyfin documentation.
Remote streaming is not automatic simply because the server is installed. Emby says it requires appropriate network configuration and sufficient bandwidth. Jellyfin’s hardware selection guidance includes general network advice, but vendor guidance should not be treated as a universal minimum for every household. Your files, client devices, connection, and whether playback transcodes all affect the result.

How to choose for your library
- Lean toward Jellyfin if having no premium licenses or features is central to your decision, and its current client support suits your devices.
- Lean toward Emby if its documented features fit your setup and you are comfortable checking the current cost and terms for Premiere features you need.
- For either one, test representative files from your library on the devices you actually use. This reveals whether those devices can play the files directly or whether your server must transcode them.
Before buying new server hardware, check whether your existing host can handle the library and playback pattern. Consider acceleration only if you expect transcoding and can confirm the relevant hardware and operating-system support. A NAS, storage drive, or capable host is an optional setup choice based on your needs—not a mandatory purchase for choosing either server.
