You can reclaim space on your existing drive without changing its partitions: review what is using storage, remove selected files or apps you no longer need, and move files you want to keep to external or supported cloud storage. Start with your operating system’s built-in storage tools, which show categories and cleanup options before you commit to deleting anything.
Start with a storage review, not a bulk deletion
Check how much space is available and which categories are taking it up. This helps you distinguish removable temporary data from personal files you may want to keep. The steps below are for Windows 10 and 11, and macOS; menu labels can vary by operating-system version.

Review Cleanup recommendations
- In File Explorer, select This PC to check available space.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and review the categories, such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
- Check the estimated savings and the items in each category. Select only what you understand and want to remove, then confirm the cleanup.
Microsoft describes Storage Sense this way: “Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and items in your Recycle Bin.” Microsoft’s Windows storage guide covers Cleanup recommendations and other built-in options.

Configure Storage Sense before enabling automatic cleanup
Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Its defaults do not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. In Settings > System > Storage, open Storage Sense to choose when it runs and set conditions for files in the Recycle Bin or Downloads. Check those conditions carefully: automatic removal can delete files you intended to keep. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance for the available controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Use Disk Cleanup if needed
If Storage Sense is unavailable, Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as another built-in option. Search for and open Disk Cleanup, choose a drive, and review the file types before selecting them. Clean up system files reveals additional categories; inspect these too rather than treating them all as disposable.
One important example is the previous Windows installation, often stored as Windows.old. Removing it can reclaim space, but also removes the option to roll back to the earlier Windows version. Microsoft lists Disk Cleanup and this rollback consequence in its Windows storage guide.

Find and remove or relocate large personal files
Review Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Sort files by size to find large items, then decide whether to delete them or keep them elsewhere. Deleting sends items to the Recycle Bin; empty it when you are sure you no longer need those files, because they still occupy space until removed from the bin.

If you want to retain large files, move them to a USB drive, SD card, or other external storage. They remain available only when that storage is connected. A portable external SSD or hard drive is an optional destination, not a requirement for basic cleanup; choose capacity and connection type based on the files you need to keep and your device.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Use OneDrive Files On-Demand with care
OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave a smaller placeholder on the PC while the full file remains in OneDrive. You can also configure Storage Sense to manage locally available cloud content. A cloud-only file depends on access to the account and service, and may require an internet connection to open or download. It is not the same as maintaining a separate backup copy. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows storage guide and Storage Sense guidance.

Inspect storage categories
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS versions, use Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. The view groups used space by category; selecting More Info may reveal management options for Applications, Documents, Messages, Music Creation, Podcasts, Recycle Bin, and TV.

System Data (called Other in some versions) is a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit another category. It is not one identifiable folder, so do not delete files at random in an attempt to clear the whole category.

Choose a suitable Mac cleanup action
- Delete items you no longer need: Review large documents, Downloads, media, unused apps, old device backups, and deleted mail or junk in Mail. Empty the Recycle Bin after checking its contents.
- Move files or media libraries: Store items on another storage device if you want to keep them off the Mac’s internal drive. A moved file or library is accessible only when its destination is available.
- Optimize storage with iCloud: This can reduce local copies, but access to content may depend on your iCloud account, configuration, and internet connection.
- Compress files: Compression can reduce the space used by files you keep, though the compressed copy may be less convenient to use until you open or extract it.
Apple describes these options and the version-specific paths in Free up storage space on Mac.

Understand the limits of Safe Mode
Apple notes that starting a Mac in Safe Mode clears certain system caches, which are recreated automatically. This may temporarily make enough room for a task such as installing macOS, but it is a troubleshooting measure rather than a lasting cleanup method; the amount of space recovered is not fixed.

| Method | What happens to the file | Offline availability | Reversibility and dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in cleanup of selected temporary or system categories | Selected items are deleted. | Deleted items are unavailable. | Review categories first; recovery is not guaranteed after removal. |
| Manual review and deletion of personal files | Selected files are deleted; emptying the Recycle Bin completes removal. | Deleted files are unavailable. | Keep or back up anything you may need before deleting. |
| Move files to external storage | Files are retained outside the internal drive. | Available when the external device is connected. | Requires an external drive or other storage device. |
| Cloud offloading or cloud placeholders | The full file is kept with the cloud service while local storage use is reduced. | Depends on whether a local copy is retained; cloud-only access may need internet. | Requires the relevant account, service, configuration, and connectivity. |
When the space is needed for a Windows update
Windows update storage needs vary with the update path, optional content, and other updates on the device. Microsoft documents using external storage for a particular update workflow when needed; that external device must have at least 10 GB free. This is not a general amount every PC must free on its internal drive. Microsoft also states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.
