The JBL Live Beam 4 has become reviewer Nikita Achanta’s go-to pair, thanks to lively sound, a comfortable sealed fit and a touchscreen case that handles useful controls without reaching for a phone. That endorsement comes with real caveats: noise cancellation is more convincing indoors than outdoors, and calls can lose clarity in busy places.
What the JBL Live Beam 4 is
The Live Beam 4 is JBL’s stem-style, in-ear true-wireless model with a sealed fit and eartips. It is one of three Live 4 designs, alongside the open-fit Live Buds 4 and Live Flex 4. JBL announced the range on 12 May 2026. The Beam is the choice in that family for listeners who want an in-ear seal rather than an open-style fit. JBL’s launch announcement

JBL specifies 10 mm dynamic drivers and describes the product as offering JBL Signature Sound, Hi-Res Audio and Spatial Sound. Those are manufacturer specifications and feature descriptions; the listening impressions below are Nikita Achanta’s judgments from the Tom’s Guide review published 25 September 2026, not laboratory measurements.

How they sound
Achanta describes the Live Beam 4’s presentation as punchy and energetic. Vocals stay centered, bass adds weight without swamping the midrange, and dense electronic tracks retain useful detail. That combination makes the sound feel lively rather than simply bass-heavy. It is a subjective assessment from the review, not a measured frequency-response result.
#1 Best Overall
- Hi-Res Audio Wireless with JBL signature sound
- The JBL Live Beam 3's 10mm dynamic drivers are powered by JBL Signature Sound. Each driver is perfectly tuned to deliver deep bass, balanced mid-range, and refined high frequencies—all at any volume level. JBL Spatial Sound makes you feel like you're at a concert as the sound comes from virtually everywhere around you.
- Convenient Smart Charging Case for app-free control
- You can customize every aspect of your JBL Live Beam 3 earbuds with the 1.45-inch touchscreen display on your Smart Charging Case. The display gives you full control of your sound on any devices - laptop, TV, smartphones, or tablets -, without needing to access the JBL App on your smartphone.
- True adaptive noise cancelling with custom control
JBL’s product page characterizes the 10 mm drivers as producing “crisp detail, deep bass, and natural balance.” That is JBL’s marketing description; it should not be mistaken for independent listening evidence. The reviewer’s more useful takeaway is that the energetic tuning remains reasonably controlled, including in the midrange. JBL Live Beam 4 specifications
The touchscreen case is more than a novelty
The Smart Charging Case has a display that can manage practical functions including volume, track changes, ANC or Ambient Sound, and EQ. Those adjustments can be made at the case, without opening the phone app or taking out a phone. Achanta found that especially useful for quick changes while listening.

- Convenient Smart Charging Case: The 1.45-inch touchscreen display on your Smart Charging Case gives you full control of your sound on any devices - laptop, TV, smartphones, or tablets without needing to access the JBL App on your smartphone.
- True adaptive noise cancelling with custom control: Tune out the outside world entirely or customize just how much ambient sound you decide to let in, with four noise-sensing mics that automatically adapt to your surroundings in real time
- 6 mics for perfect calls: Six beamforming microphones reduce wind and noise interference, so your words always come through loud and clear. And you can create your own calling environment with Personal Sound Amplification’s customized ambient sound levels
- 48 hours total playback plus wireless charging: Enjoy 12 hours of playtime, plus another 36 in the charging case*. 10 minutes on a USB type-C charging cable will give you another 4 hours of playtime. You can also recharge them wirelessly. (*with ANC off)
- Multi-point connection: Switch effortlessly from one Bluetooth device to another, so if you are watching a video on your tablet, you won’t miss a call on your mobile.
The companion app still matters if you want deeper personalization. The review notes a 10-band EQ, Personi-Fi 3.0, ANC adjustment and customizable touch controls in the app. In other words, the screen is a convenient shortcut for common actions, while the app provides more detailed setup.

Noise cancellation and calls: the main limitations
ANC works better indoors than outdoors
In Achanta’s testing, noise cancellation reduced keyboard noise and office chatter effectively indoors. Outside, it let more sound through: a rattling bus and traffic remained noticeable. For a quiet office or home, that performance may be enough; for a commute where blocking road and transit noise is a priority, the review gives reason to be cautious.

- JBL Pure Bass sound: JBL Vibe Beam 2 earbuds feature 8mm dynamic drivers that deliver exciting JBL Pure Bass sound.
- Active Noise Cancelling:Listen to your surroundings & filter out distracting noise. Smart Ambient lets you control how much of the outside world you want to hear, so you can talk with others or stay aware of your surroundings while keeping your earbuds in
- 4 mics for crisp, clear calls: Two mics on each earbud pick up and clearly transmit your voice while canceling out ambient noise. So you can make clear, crisp calls even when you're walking through a busy park on a breezy day.
- 40 total hours of playback: Enjoy 10 hours of playtime, plus another three full charges (30Hrs) in the charging case.* Need to recharge even faster? 10 minutes on a USB type-C charging cable will give you another three hours of playtime. (*with ANC off)
- JBL Headphones app: Select the EQ that fits your style or customize your own. Voice Prompts in multiple languages give you useful information (e.g.if battery is running low). Or chill out and recharge in Relax Mode by choosing one of five peaceful sounds.
Calls are less dependable in noisy places
Calls sounded good to the reviewer when there was no external disturbance, but voice clarity degraded in a busy store with announcements and conversation nearby. JBL lists six microphones with beamforming and noise reduction, but those features do not guarantee intelligible calls in every environment. Frequent callers who often work from crowded public spaces should weigh this limitation heavily.
Fit, battery and durability
Achanta liked the fit, but comfort and seal depend on the listener’s ears and correct eartip sizing. JBL rates the earbuds for up to 12 hours of playback with ANC off, with up to 36 additional hours from the case, for up to 48 hours total. With ANC on, JBL states up to 10 hours in the earbuds. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent runtime measurements; actual battery life varies with settings and use. JBL’s product specifications

JBL lists an IP55 rating for water and dust resistance and Bluetooth 6.0. IP55 is not a claim that the earbuds are waterproof, so do not treat them as suitable for submersion.
Price and availability depend on your market
JBL’s UK product page displayed a price of £149.99 and “In stock” when accessed on 4 October 2026; that is a dated page observation, not a guaranteed ongoing price. Achanta’s 25 September 2026 review listed £149 at Amazon and said the earbuds were unavailable in the US at the time. Availability and pricing can change, and those figures apply only to the named market and date. JBL’s launch announcement had set a £179.99 UK price at jbl.com from 12 May 2026, a launch figure that differs from those later listings.

Who should consider the Live Beam 4?
- A good match: listeners who want a sealed in-ear fit, energetic sound, long manufacturer-rated battery life and convenient playback or EQ controls on the case.
- Think twice: commuters who need strong outdoor noise cancellation or people who regularly take calls amid traffic, announcements or crowds.
- Choose within the Live 4 range: the Beam is the sealed in-ear option; JBL also offers Buds and Flex designs, but they have different fit styles rather than being interchangeable versions of the same shape.
The verdict is grounded in one dated editorial review rather than a current, independent head-to-head comparison with alternatives such as Bose QuietComfort, Nothing Ear (3), Apple AirPods 5 or Sony WF-1000XM6. Those names alone do not establish which model is better for a particular buyer.
Firmware notes

The changelog is dated and may not include releases issued later. JBL Live Beam 4 software update release notes
