For everyday spending inside the UAE, Jaywan is the domestic card scheme to consider. For overseas purchases, international websites, subscriptions or travel, a Visa or Mastercard route—or a Jaywan card explicitly co-badged with one of those networks—is usually the safer choice. The logo on the plastic is only the starting point: the issuing bank or licensed financial institution sets eligibility, fees, controls and many practical limits.
Jaywan issuance became a nationwide consumer option in July 2026. Some cards carry only the Jaywan logo (mono-badge); others combine Jaywan with an international network (co-badged). Before replacing an existing debit card, identify the exact network logos, read the issuer’s fee schedule and confirm acceptance for the merchants and countries you actually use.

What Jaywan is—and what it is not
Jaywan is the UAE’s domestic payment-card scheme, operated by Al Etihad Payments, a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). It is not a new name for Visa or Mastercard. Jaywan identifies the domestic scheme through which a participating card can route UAE transactions.

That describes the scheme’s intended capabilities, not a guarantee that every merchant, website or terminal accepts every card. A merchant can limit the networks it supports, and the issuer can impose geographic, online or transaction controls.

CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes Jaywan as enabling payment-related data to be processed and stored within the UAE. This is an infrastructure and localization characteristic. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular card is more private, more secure or less vulnerable to fraud than another card.
The key distinction: domestic scheme versus international network
| Decision point | Jaywan | Visa or Mastercard |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | UAE domestic payment-card scheme | International payment networks used on their own or alongside a domestic scheme |
| Typical strength | Local UAE payments and domestic infrastructure | International merchant and online acceptance, subject to the merchant and issuer |
| Who issues the card | A bank, licensed financial institution or exchange house | A bank or other licensed issuer |
| Fees and rewards | Set by the issuer and account package; no single Jaywan-wide schedule is established | Set by the issuer and account package; network branding alone does not determine price |
| International use | Explicitly associated with co-badged versions; mono-badge cards are described for local and GCC use | Network route is designed for international use, but issuer settings and merchant acceptance still apply |
This distinction explains why comparing a “Jaywan card” with “a Visa card” can be misleading. You are comparing a scheme label with a network label, while the actual product is a bank account and card package. Two cards carrying different logos can have identical fees, or two cards carrying the same international logo can have very different foreign-exchange markups, ATM charges and eligibility rules.
How to read the logos and payment route
Think of the logos as identifying the payment routes available on that particular piece of plastic. A mono-badge Jaywan card presents the domestic route described by its issuer. A co-badged card presents Jaywan and an international network, giving the issuer and merchant a choice of route according to the transaction and the network support available.
The physical card does not override the merchant’s configuration or the issuer’s risk controls. A terminal may display several logos but still decline a transaction because the card is not enabled for that channel, the merchant does not support the relevant route, authentication fails or a geographic restriction applies. Conversely, a card can work at one online checkout and fail at another even when both appear to accept debit cards.
When a bank representative says that a card is “international,” ask what that means in practice: international point-of-sale purchases, overseas ATM withdrawals, online card-not-present payments, recurring billing, or all four. Ask whether activation is automatic or whether you must switch on overseas and online use in the banking app.
Mono-badge and co-badged Jaywan cards
Mono-badge Jaywan
A mono-badge card carries Jaywan as its relevant payment scheme. Al Etihad Payments describes these cards for local and GCC usage. Do not assume that a mono-badge card will work at an overseas hotel, foreign ATM, international subscription service or travel website simply because it has a chip and contactless symbol.
Co-badged Jaywan
A co-badged card carries Jaywan plus an international network. Al Etihad Payments has announced partnerships involving Discover, Mastercard, Visa and UnionPay. Visa has separately announced a Jaywan–Visa co-badging agreement, and Mastercard has announced a Jaywan–Mastercard collaboration.

Where each type of card should work
UAE ATMs and POS terminals
Jaywan is designed for UAE domestic transactions. CBUAE’s UAESWITCH information explains that the domestic ATM network interconnects banks, allowing customers to use other banks’ ATM and POS facilities on the connected infrastructure. This describes domestic interoperability, not universal acceptance at every terminal or a promise that no issuer fee will apply.
Visa and Mastercard debit cards are also commonly used for UAE purchases wherever the merchant accepts those networks. The practical question is the terminal’s enabled network and the issuer’s controls, not which logo is theoretically capable of processing a payment.
Online checkout
Al Etihad Payments lists e-commerce as a Jaywan channel. In September 2026, Mastercard announced that Jaywan transactions were enabled through noon payments’ digital-payments ecosystem using Mastercard Gateway. That is a concrete online acceptance example, not evidence that every UAE website, app or subscription service accepts every Jaywan card.
For a website you depend on, check the checkout page or ask the merchant whether it accepts the exact Jaywan product. Also confirm that your issuer allows online and international-not-present transactions, because a supported network can still be blocked by card controls, authentication rules or risk settings.
Outside the UAE
Al Etihad Payments’ scheme description associates mono-badge cards with local and GCC use and co-badged cards with local and international use. If you need to pay abroad, verify that the particular card is co-badged and identify the international network printed on it.
UnionPay’s Jaywan announcement in 2026 cited acceptance in more than 180 countries for the UnionPay network. That figure belongs to the specific network-coverage statement in that announcement; it should not be generalized to every Jaywan card or treated as a guarantee that every merchant in every country will accept your card.
What changed in 2026
On 20 July 2026, Al Etihad Payments announced the official commencement of nationwide Jaywan card issuance through banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses, making the scheme available to consumers. This marked the shift from a scheme being announced to cards becoming a live consumer product.

Al Etihad Payments had earlier described the scheme publicly on 27 February 2025, including ATM, POS and e-commerce channels. The 2026 issuance announcements therefore provide a useful date distinction: a scheme capability announcement is not the same thing as a consumer being able to apply for a card at a particular institution.
Fees, eligibility and benefits: why the issuer matters more than the logo
The official material reviewed does not establish a single, comparable fee schedule for Jaywan, Visa and Mastercard debit cards. It also does not establish universal rules for account eligibility, minimum balances, salary-credit requirements, replacement charges, ATM fees, foreign-currency markups, international transaction fees or rewards.
Before choosing, obtain the current tariff and account terms for the exact product. Compare these items:

- Minimum balance, salary-transfer or monthly-income conditions, if any.
- Account maintenance, card issuance and replacement fees.
- Cash-withdrawal charges at the issuer’s ATMs and other banks’ ATMs.
- Foreign-exchange markup, dynamic-currency-conversion treatment and international transaction fees.
- Daily purchase, cash-withdrawal and online limits.
- Contactless, e-commerce and overseas-use activation controls.
- Dispute handling, fraud alerts and customer-support availability.
- Rewards, cashback or bundled account benefits.
Ask whether fees differ by channel. A cash withdrawal, a local POS purchase, an overseas POS purchase and a recurring online payment can be treated differently under one account tariff. Also check whether a replacement or emergency reissue has a separate charge, especially if you travel.
Do not choose a card because someone says Jaywan is automatically cheaper, or because Visa or Mastercard branding is assumed to guarantee a particular exchange rate. Neither conclusion follows from the scheme name. The issuer’s current terms control the cost of your account.
Which card fits your spending pattern?
You spend almost entirely in the UAE
A Jaywan card can be a sensible primary card when your spending is local and the issuing account has acceptable fees and service. Check that your regular supermarkets, transport providers, restaurants, government services and online merchants support the card. If a local merchant accepts several networks, the choice may come down to issuer pricing and account conditions rather than the logo.
You travel or buy from foreign merchants
Choose a card with explicit international-network co-badging or retain a separate Visa or Mastercard debit card. Confirm overseas cash withdrawal, foreign-currency transactions, card-present and online-not-present payments, and the issuer’s fraud controls before departure. Ask how exchange rates and markups are calculated rather than relying on the network name.
You use subscriptions, app stores or one important website
Verify that the merchant accepts the exact card. Scheme-level e-commerce capability does not prove merchant-level support. A failed recurring payment can result from the merchant’s allowed networks, the issuer’s online setting, a billing-address mismatch, a regional restriction or a declined authentication step.

You want one card for domestic and international use
Look for a Jaywan card that visibly carries an international network and obtain written confirmation of overseas and online use. A co-badged card may reduce the need to carry two cards, but it does not remove the need to check fees, limits and fallback arrangements. Keep a second payment method for travel if a declined transaction would create a serious problem.
You mainly need cash
Start with the ATM network and tariff rather than the rewards headline. Confirm whether your card can use other UAE banks’ ATMs, what out-of-network charges apply, and whether overseas withdrawals are enabled. A card can be suitable for domestic cash access while still being unsuitable for foreign ATM use.
A practical decision matrix
| Your priority | Most relevant option | Checks before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Routine UAE purchases and cash | Jaywan mono-badge or co-badged card | Local merchant support, ATM interoperability, account and card fees |
| Regular international travel | Existing Visa/Mastercard or explicitly co-badged Jaywan | Countries supported, overseas ATM and POS use, FX markup, limits and fraud controls |
| One specific subscription or website | Whichever exact card the merchant confirms | Recurring billing, online authentication, regional restrictions and billing details |
| Lowest overall cost | Not determinable from the network logo | Complete issuer tariff, balance conditions, ATM and foreign-use charges |
How to check a Jaywan card before applying
- Identify the logos. Ask whether the product is mono-badge or co-badged. Record every network shown on the physical card and in the digital-card details.
- Read the product sheet. Look specifically for local-only, GCC, international, e-commerce and recurring-payment language.
- Request the tariff. Check issuance, annual or monthly account charges, replacement, ATM, foreign-exchange and international transaction fees.
- Confirm limits and controls. Ask about daily purchase and cash limits, online activation, magnetic-stripe fallback, contactless limits and travel notifications.
- Test critical merchants. For a subscription, airline, hotel or business website you rely on, confirm acceptance before closing another account.
- Check dispute support. Understand how to report a lost card, unauthorized transaction or merchant dispute while in the UAE and abroad.
- Plan a fallback. For travel, carry a second payment method and keep the issuer’s emergency contact details separately from the card.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Jaywan card works abroad
Only co-badging and the issuer’s terms establish an international route for the specific product. Ask before travelling.
Treating a partnership as a product catalogue
Visa, Mastercard, Discover and UnionPay partnerships show that co-badged arrangements are possible. They do not prove that every bank offers every arrangement or that the same customer qualifies for each one.
Confusing scheme capability with universal acceptance
Jaywan’s stated ATM, POS and e-commerce channels describe intended coverage. Merchant contracts, terminal configuration, website settings and issuer risk controls still determine whether an individual payment succeeds.
Comparing logos instead of total cost
A low-fee account can still become expensive through foreign-exchange markup or out-of-network ATM charges. Compare the complete issuer tariff and account conditions.
Reading data localization as a security ranking
CBUAE’s description of UAE processing and storage is useful context about infrastructure. It is not a measured comparison of fraud rates, privacy outcomes or security performance between schemes.
Recommended Free Tools
Closing an old card too early
Do not cancel an existing Visa or Mastercard until you have tested the Jaywan card for the payments that matter to you. Moving a salary account, subscription or travel booking can create avoidable disruption if the new card has different limits or acceptance.

Questions to ask a bank or licensed issuer
- Is this card mono-badge Jaywan or co-badged?
- Which international network, if any, is on the card?
- Where can I use it outside the UAE, and are there country restrictions?
- Are online, recurring and app-based payments enabled by default?
- What are the foreign-exchange markup and international transaction charges?
- What does a cash withdrawal cost at another bank’s ATM?
- What are the purchase, cash and online limits?
- What happens if a merchant processes a payment through a network the card does not support?
- Which fees apply if the card is lost, replaced or urgently reissued?
Bottom line for most UAE residents
Use Jaywan as a domestic option when the issuing account suits your needs and your spending is mainly inside the UAE. Keep Visa or Mastercard access—or choose a Jaywan card explicitly co-badged with one—when international, online or travel payments matter. The correct decision is not a permanent verdict on one scheme; it is a check of the exact card’s badge, acceptance route, issuer fees, limits and account conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jaywan the same as Visa or Mastercard?
No. Jaywan is the UAE domestic card scheme operated by Al Etihad Payments. Visa and Mastercard are international payment networks. A Jaywan card may be mono-badge or co-badged with an international network.
Can I use a mono-badge Jaywan card outside the UAE?
Do not assume so. Al Etihad Payments describes mono-badge cards for local and GCC use, while international use is associated with co-badged cards. Confirm the exact product and issuer terms before travelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre all Jaywan cards accepted online?
Jaywan scheme material includes e-commerce, and Mastercard announced a September 2026 integration through noon payments’ ecosystem. Individual websites, apps and subscriptions can still restrict accepted networks or be affected by issuer controls.
Is Jaywan cheaper than Visa or Mastercard?
There is no universal answer. Issuers set account, card, ATM, foreign-exchange and international transaction fees. Compare the current tariff for the exact account rather than the logo.
Which banks issue Jaywan cards?
Nationwide issuance through banks, licensed financial institutions and exchange houses was announced on 20 July 2026. FAB announced a Jaywan debit card that day, and Dubai Islamic Bank announced a launch on 27 July 2026. Availability and eligibility vary by issuer.
What does co-badged mean?
A co-badged card displays Jaywan and an international network such as Visa, Mastercard, Discover or UnionPay. It is intended to provide domestic and international routes, but the issuer’s product terms and merchant acceptance still apply.
Does UAE data localization make Jaywan more secure?
CBUAE’s 2024 annual report describes payment-related data being processed and stored within the UAE. That is an infrastructure feature, not proof of superior privacy, fraud outcomes or security.
Should I keep my existing Visa or Mastercard debit card?
If you travel, pay foreign merchants or rely on international subscriptions, keeping an international-network card—or choosing an explicitly co-badged Jaywan card—can provide useful fallback. Test any replacement before closing the old account.
The Bottom Line
Choose based on the exact card, not the logo alone: Jaywan suits UAE-focused spending; Visa or Mastercard, or an explicitly co-badged Jaywan card, is more appropriate when international and online acceptance matters. Confirm issuer fees, limits and merchant support before switching.
