One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a road trip through dead zones, choose an app that can do more than store a map: download the areas you will drive through, make sure the app can calculate and guide your route offline, and test it before you leave. Google Maps, Apple Maps, HERE WeGo, and OsmAnd all offer offline options, but their documented features and setup differ. Apple explicitly documents offline navigation after an area is downloaded; OsmAnd emphasizes downloaded vector maps for search and navigation; HERE WeGo requires downloaded map data and offline mode; Google Maps lets you download areas, though downloads are unavailable in some regions.
What an offline navigation app needs to do on a road trip
Offline navigation is not the same as having an app installed or seeing a map on screen. The phone needs the map data for the places you will drive, and the app needs to be able to calculate and guide a route from that stored data. If either piece is missing, a route that worked at home may fail once the phone loses its connection.

That distinction answers a common driver question: a local map copy can support routing, but only when the app has the necessary map coverage and its offline navigation features are available for that map and device. Downloading an area is a preparation step, not proof that every route calculation or feature will work offline. Test the route calculation with cellular data disabled while parked before depending on it.

No single app is the automatic winner for every trip. The practical choice depends on whether the destination region can be downloaded, whether the app calculates your route without a connection, and whether the phone-to-car setup you intend to use is supported. The sources do not provide a consistent, region-by-region feature comparison, so treat the table as a shortlist and verify the details for your own route.
Google Maps: a familiar option, with regional download limits
Google Maps supports downloading a map area for offline use, which can make it a straightforward starting point for drivers who already use the app. Its offline-map instructions also make an important limitation explicit: some countries or regions do not offer offline downloads. Google identifies contractual, language, and address-format limitations as reasons. If your destination is in a place where the download option is unavailable, familiarity with the app will not solve the coverage problem.
Prepare Google Maps before departure
- Open the app while connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data and check whether the destination and the full driving area can be downloaded.
- Download the map area that covers the journey, not just the destination point. Include the route corridor and places where you might need to leave the main route.
- Check that the download completes and is present on the device before leaving reliable coverage.
- While parked, disable mobile data and test whether the app can calculate and guide the route you intend to take. A map visible on screen is not a substitute for this check.
For car use, distinguish Google Maps running through phone projection from Maps built into a vehicle. Google has separate documentation for offline use with Google built-in. That page is specifically about built-in vehicle Maps; it should not be treated as proof that the same setup or behavior applies to CarPlay or Android Auto projection. Apple Maps: offline navigation for iPhone on iOS 17 and later
Apple Support says that iPhone users on iOS 17 and later can use downloaded offline maps for information and navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. That makes Apple Maps a clearly documented option for an iPhone road trip when the area is downloaded in advance. The cited support page does not establish equivalent availability for other platforms or every region, so confirm that the relevant map can be downloaded on your device before building a trip around it.
Prepare Apple Maps before departure
- Use Apple’s iPhone offline-maps instructions to download the area you will need, while you still have a reliable connection.
- Cover the trip itself as well as the destination. If you may detour, include the areas where you could reasonably need a new route.
- Check that the download is complete and current before leaving.
- Test navigation while the iPhone is disconnected from Wi-Fi and mobile data, and do so while safely parked.
The useful question is not simply whether Apple Maps has an offline feature; it is whether the map area relevant to this specific journey is stored and the app can navigate your intended route under offline conditions. Verify that on the phone you will carry, rather than assuming that a downloaded destination map covers every approach road.

HERE WeGo: an offline-capable alternative with multiple travel modes
HERE’s offline-navigation instructions describe downloading map data and selecting offline mode before using the app without a connection. The Associated Press report of October 8, 2026, describes downloadable country maps and routes across driving and other modes. Those sources make HERE WeGo worth considering if you want an alternative to the mapping app already on your phone or expect to use more than one travel mode.
Do not take a description of country maps or multiple modes as a guarantee that every country, route type, or app version behaves the same way offline. Availability can differ. For a road trip, the essential checks remain map coverage and offline route calculation for the actual drive.
Prepare HERE WeGo before departure
- Open HERE WeGo while connected and download the map data for the places you expect to travel through.
- Follow HERE’s instructions to select offline mode rather than assuming that downloading data automatically changes the app’s operating mode.
- Check the route on the device and confirm that the downloaded map covers the route corridor, including likely alternatives.
- With the phone offline and parked, calculate and start guidance for a representative route.
If you also intend to use a non-driving mode, check that mode separately. The AP description establishes that the app offers routes across driving and other modes, but it does not establish that all those modes or their associated information remain available without a connection in every place.
OsmAnd: a strong choice if you are comfortable managing maps
OsmAnd’s getting-started guidance recommends downloading vector maps to make functions such as search and navigation work properly. That emphasis makes it a natural candidate for drivers who want map data stored locally and are willing to handle map downloads and updates themselves. Its CarPlay documentation describes voice guidance and warns that route calculation can be blocked when required maps are missing or outdated, with an alert to that effect.
That warning is useful in practice: coverage is not just about downloading something before a trip. The downloaded maps must cover the places needed to calculate the particular route, and old or incomplete data can require attention. OsmAnd’s documentation makes the map-management requirement visible rather than treating offline readiness as automatic.

Prepare OsmAnd before departure
- Download the relevant vector maps using OsmAnd’s getting-started guidance.
- Check that the maps cover the full route and any areas you might use for a detour.
- Update maps that are out of date before asking the app to calculate the route.
- Test search and route calculation with mobile data and Wi-Fi disabled, while parked.
- If you plan to use CarPlay, confirm that the required maps are present and current, then test voice guidance through the intended setup.
Choose OsmAnd if that preparation is a reasonable trade-off for you. If you do not want to manage map coverage, or have not confirmed which regions are downloaded, another app with a simpler workflow may be easier to prepare. The sources establish OsmAnd’s map and CarPlay guidance, not a universal feature comparison with every competing app.
How to prepare any app for a trip through dead zones
Download planning is the difference between having an offline-capable app and being ready to navigate offline. Do this before travel, when you have a stable connection, enough time, and room on the phone for the map files. A download that is still in progress when you leave is not dependable coverage.
1. Map the entire likely driving area
Start with the planned route, then think in corridors rather than pins. A download centered tightly on the hotel or destination may not include the roads needed to reach it. Include the drive from your starting area, the route between stops, and plausible detours. If you expect to change plans, download the relevant neighboring area too. The exact area controls and available coverage vary by app; use that app’s own map-download interface to confirm what will be stored.
2. Check the download and the map’s freshness
Wait for the app to finish downloading, then confirm that the saved area is still available in its offline-map or map-management view. Update it if necessary before leaving. OsmAnd explicitly warns that missing or outdated maps required for route calculation can prompt an alert in its CarPlay workflow. Other apps may present coverage or update status differently, so do not assume that an old download is adequate simply because it remains listed.
3. Test the function you will need, not just the map display
While parked, switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data, search for a place on the route, and calculate a route that starts where you are likely to begin. Confirm that turn guidance starts. If you expect to rely on a car display, test the planned connection and guidance in that configuration too. This catches a missing area or an offline limitation before it becomes a problem on the road.

4. Test a route change if detours matter
A route calculated offline before departure and a new route calculated after a road closure are different needs. A disconnected app has no live traffic feed or real-time road information, and you should not rely on live rerouting in that situation. If offline recalculation is important, test it by changing the destination or route while disconnected and parked. This confirms what the app can do with its stored data, without confusing that capability with live incident awareness.
5. Keep a fallback that does not depend on the same connection
For a long or remote drive, keep another way to understand the route if the app cannot calculate it: for example, directions you saved in advance or a second offline-capable navigation app with its map area already downloaded. Do not assume that installing a second app at the last moment creates useful offline coverage. It needs the same preparation: map data for the route and a successful offline test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Offline navigation versus live traffic and rerouting
The core benefit of downloaded maps is access to map information and, where supported, route calculation and guidance without a data connection. The core limitation is that a stored map cannot provide information that depends on a live service. Current traffic is the clearest example. Real-time conditions may change the best route, but an offline app cannot see those changes through a connection it does not have.
Plan accordingly. Use live information while it is available, then treat the offline route as guidance based on the app’s stored maps rather than a live assessment of road conditions. If you lose the connection, a route may remain usable, but do not interpret continued navigation as confirmation that traffic, closures, or other current conditions have been checked.
Choosing between the four apps
Pick Google Maps if its offline area is available for your route
It is a reasonable first choice when you already use Google Maps and can download the complete travel area. Its regional download restrictions are the main qualification to resolve early. Also verify your car setup: the cited Google built-in instructions apply to Maps built into a vehicle, not automatically to phone projection.

Pick Apple Maps if you use a supported iPhone and can download the area
Apple’s documentation is explicit about offline information and navigation on iPhone running iOS 17 or later after the area is downloaded. That is a direct fit for an iPhone driver who wants to stay within Apple Maps. The support citation does not establish the same capability on other platforms or in every region.
Pick HERE WeGo if you want a separate offline-capable app
HERE WeGo requires both map downloads and offline mode, and an October 2026 AP report describes country maps and routes across driving and other modes. It is worth a look when those options suit your travel plans, provided you validate the specific country and version rather than assuming uniform availability.
Pick OsmAnd if local map management is acceptable
OsmAnd suits drivers who are prepared to download and keep maps current, especially if they want to use its documented CarPlay voice guidance. Its warning about missing or outdated route maps is a reminder to test the complete workflow before setting out.

- The map appears, but the app cannot calculate a route. The visible area may not contain all map data required for routing, or the app may need a separate offline mode. Download or update the necessary area, then test again without a connection.
- The destination is covered, but the route starts outside the downloaded area. Expand the saved coverage to include the route corridor and starting point. A destination-only map does not establish that the whole journey is covered.
- The app works at home but cannot download the destination map. Google documents that offline downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions. Check availability before departure and choose an alternative whose area can be downloaded for that route.
- A car display behaves differently from the phone. Verify whether you are using a built-in vehicle navigation system or phone projection. Documentation for Google built-in does not establish identical behavior in CarPlay or Android Auto; OsmAnd separately documents its CarPlay workflow.
- The route does not reflect a current delay or closure. That is not something stored maps can resolve with no connection. Use current information while connected, and have an independent way to check or understand the route if real-time conditions are essential.
- A previously downloaded map is no longer suitable. Check the map’s status and update it before travel. OsmAnd specifically warns that missing or outdated maps required for calculation can trigger an alert.
Bottom line
For road trips, choose based on verified offline routing for your destination, not on a general claim that an app has offline maps. Apple Maps explicitly supports offline navigation on iPhone with iOS 17 or later after downloading an area; Google Maps offers offline map downloads but restricts them in some regions; HERE WeGo requires downloaded maps and offline mode; OsmAnd rewards careful map management and documents CarPlay voice guidance. Download the route area, update it, and prove the route works with connectivity off before you depend on it.
