For a new JavaScript end-to-end suite that needs Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, start by evaluating Playwright: its browser support and first-party Playwright Test runner match that use case. Choose Puppeteer for Chrome- or Chrome for Testing-focused automation, Selenium when WebDriver or remote Grid execution is central, Cypress for its integrated application-testing and debugging workflow, and WebdriverIO for a configurable Node.js runner or standalone scripts. “Cross-browser” means different things across these tools, so confirm the exact browsers and versions your project needs before choosing.
What matters when comparing browser automation frameworks
These frameworks can all automate browsers, but they are not interchangeable packages with the same testing model. Compare the browser targets, the way you write and run tests, how you debug failures, and whether you need local or distributed execution.
- Browser coverage: Identify the browser engines and branded browsers you must support. Chromium, Chrome, and Edge are related but are not interchangeable labels for every purpose; WebKit coverage is not the same as Safari-branded coverage.
- Workflow: Decide whether you want a test runner with fixtures and reporting, a browser-control library to combine with your own tools, or an integrated interactive testing application.
- Execution: Consider your CI operating system, browser installation and version management, parallelism, and whether tests must run remotely across machines.
- Debugging: Look at how each tool helps you understand a failure: interactive inspection, traces, snapshots, logs, or artifacts.
The comparison below reflects the official documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026. Selenium’s documentation pages cited here state that they were last modified September 16, 2026. Browser mappings, supported versions, and runtime requirements can change; check the documentation for the exact release you plan to install.
Framework comparison at a glance
| Framework | Good fit to investigate | Documented browser and workflow notes | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | New cross-browser end-to-end suites and browser scripting | Documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, Chrome, and Edge, plus emulated devices. Playwright Test includes fixtures, parallel isolated execution, artifacts, Inspector, code generation, and tracing. | Install browser binaries matched to the Playwright version; browser support can change with releases. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript automation centered on Chrome or Chrome for Testing | The current support documentation maps Puppeteer versions to Chrome for Testing and Firefox. Firefox support began in Puppeteer v23; Chrome for Testing support began in v20. | Do not assume WebKit support: Playwright’s migration guide says Puppeteer does not support it. Confirm the package-to-browser mapping for your version. |
| Selenium WebDriver | Teams prioritizing WebDriver, a multi-language ecosystem, or remote execution | The JavaScript binding documents Selenium Manager for browser-driver setup and remote server/Grid use. Selenium Grid is for executing tests across different machines and platforms. | The current JavaScript binding documentation requires Node.js 22 or newer. Browser capabilities vary by browser. |
| Cypress | Web application end-to-end and component testing with an interactive local workflow | Documents Firefox and Chrome-family browsers, including Edge; features include automatic waiting, time-travel snapshots, and network control. Cypress App is free and open source; Cypress Cloud is paid. | Check that the specific browser and automation workflow you need are supported. Treat Cloud as a separate commercial service from the local App. |
| WebdriverIO | Teams that want a configurable Node.js test runner, integrations, or standalone automation | Current getting-started documentation is for v9.x and lists Node.js 18.20.0 or higher. A setup wizard supports npm, Yarn, pnpm, and bun; standalone scripts and Chrome DevTools Recorder are also documented. | Verify current browser and service integrations against your project. The listed Node requirement is for the documented v9.x setup. |
How to choose by project need
Choose Playwright for a new suite targeting Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit
Playwright is the most direct starting point when your test matrix needs those three engines and you want a runner from the same project. Playwright Test provides fixtures, parallel execution with isolation, and test artifacts, along with tools such as Inspector and tracing. Its browser documentation says each Playwright version requires specific browser binaries, so rerun the browser installation command after upgrading and keep the package and browser versions aligned.

Choose Puppeteer for Chrome-focused scripting, after checking Firefox needs
Puppeteer remains a strong fit when the main job is JavaScript automation against Chrome or Chrome for Testing. Its current support page also documents Firefox, with support beginning in v23; the page maps package versions to browser versions, so consult that mapping rather than assuming the latest browser is supported by every package release. If WebKit is a requirement, Puppeteer is not the fit identified by Playwright’s migration guide.
Choose Selenium when WebDriver or remote Grid execution is important
Selenium is an umbrella project for browser automation tools and libraries. Its WebDriver model and language ecosystem may fit teams that need to share practices across languages or execute tests across machines using Grid. For JavaScript specifically, the current binding documentation requires Node.js 22 or newer and describes Selenium Manager for setting up browser drivers. Confirm capabilities for each target browser rather than treating Selenium support as identical across browsers.

Run a proof of concept before committing
Official feature lists do not establish which framework will work best with your application’s specific flows. Build a small evaluation against your real environment before migrating or standardizing.
- Write down the browser matrix. Name each required engine and branded browser, including the browser versions and operating systems used in CI.
- Automate one representative user journey. Include the application’s real authentication flow and any frames, downloads, or other browser behaviors that matter to the suite.
- Run it in the intended CI environment. Check setup, browser installation, parallel execution, and how failures appear in logs and artifacts.
- Exercise debugging and maintenance. Intentionally inspect a failing step and assess whether the framework’s tracing, snapshots, Inspector, or runner workflow helps your team diagnose it.
- Recheck versions and integrations. Confirm runtime requirements, browser mappings, and any services or integrations against the exact package versions you intend to use.
Performance, reliability, and cost: what the evidence supports
Do not pick a speed winner from feature lists
The official pages reviewed do not provide a named, apples-to-apples benchmark of current framework releases under a common workload. There is no supported basis here for calling one framework the fastest. Measure the representative journey from your own application if runtime is a deciding factor; distinguish browser startup, test execution, and CI queue time when comparing results.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Plan for browser and runtime version changes
Playwright requires browser binaries matched to its version, and Puppeteer’s support page maps package releases to browser releases. Selenium and WebdriverIO document minimum Node.js versions for the current JavaScript setup described above. Pin project dependencies and confirm the browser/runtime combination used in CI when upgrading, rather than assuming an old environment remains compatible.
Separate software from hosted services
The frameworks themselves are downloadable software. Cypress distinguishes its free, open-source local App from paid Cypress Cloud features. The comparison evidence does not establish a comparable total-cost figure for the five frameworks, so account for your own CI, infrastructure, and any optional services rather than treating one price point as the cost of a complete testing setup.

ScreenshotNeo is a complementary alternative for screenshot capture
ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for an end-to-end automation framework when you need to click through an application, assert behavior, or test a user journey. It is the alternative to try first when the narrower job is to capture website screenshots or PDFs through an API, or let an AI agent request captures through an MCP server. Its stated differentiators are clean shots—cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture—and billing only for clean shots, with bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits costing nothing. Each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides MCP tools for agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, one GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response handling:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, then sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
