FFmpeg’s reconnect flags help with certain HTTP inputs; they do not fix every interruption, reconnect a failed YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output, or restart FFmpeg after it exits. Start by identifying which part failed—input, processing, output, or the process itself—then apply the remedy for that failure.
First identify where the stream failed
Save the full FFmpeg command and timestamped log from startup through the interruption. Note the input protocol, whether the input URL is temporary or expires, and whether FFmpeg is still running, exited with an error, or reports a successful exit. The word “reconnect” in a log is not enough to identify the cause.

| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Errors while FFmpeg reads an HTTP or HTTPS source | Input connection, HTTP response, or end-of-file handling | Check the HTTP-specific options below, the source URL’s validity, and whether the source is meant to stay open or end. |
| The input continues, but YouTube stops receiving the stream | Output connection or YouTube ingest | Check the RTMP/RTMPS destination, stream key, outbound network, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages. |
| FFmpeg exits | Process failure, not an ongoing reconnect attempt | Read the final log lines and exit status. An input reconnect option cannot restart a process that has stopped. |
| FFmpeg stays running but the stream freezes or loses audio/video | Processing, source, network, or ingest health | Compare the input and output timestamps and inspect the log and YouTube stream health to locate where progress stops. |
Keep the stream key private. Redact it from logs or command examples before sharing them; a stream key can allow someone else to broadcast to your channel.

FFmpeg documents the relevant reconnect controls for its HTTP protocol, not as universal retries for every input or output. For an HTTP input that disconnects before reaching EOF, a common starting point is -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1. The first enables reconnecting after a disconnect before EOF; the second covers streamed, non-seekable inputs. Put these input options before the -i they apply to.

This illustrative pattern shows placement, not a complete production command or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL" [output options] "OUTPUT"
Use -reconnect_at_eof 1 only when reaching EOF should be treated as an error and the source should be requested again—typically when the HTTP source is supposed to be live or endless. If a finite recording reaches its normal end, enabling this option may cause FFmpeg to request it again instead of treating the end as expected.
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL" [output options] "OUTPUT"
That second pattern is appropriate only if repeated requests are the intended behavior. It will not make an expired or revoked URL valid, and it is not a substitute for a retry policy suited to the failure.

Disconnects, network errors, HTTP error responses, and EOF are distinct cases. FFmpeg has separate HTTP controls for some network-error and HTTP-status retries, as well as retry limits and delays; their availability and behavior can depend on the installed version and build. Before adding them, inspect the options supported by the actual binary:
ffmpeg -h protocol=http
Use bounded retry counts and delays where supported so a bad or expired source does not trigger an indefinite rapid retry loop. Check the resulting log to confirm that the options affect the input you intended. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP reconnection behavior; its HTTP implementation is version-sensitive, so the installed build’s help output matters.
Do not apply HTTP input retries to YouTube output failures
If FFmpeg reads its source normally but loses YouTube ingest, the HTTP input flags are aimed at the wrong leg. Check the output URL and protocol, verify that the stream key is current and entered correctly, and review YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings. Then check whether the machine’s upload connection can sustain the configured stream.

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported ingest protocols and codec choices, bitrate guidance, testing, and stream-health monitoring. It recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no greater than four seconds. Choose encoder settings for the resolution and bitrate you are actually sending, and use the current YouTube encoder settings guidance rather than guessing a bitrate for an unspecified resolution.
YouTube’s network streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth room. That is a platform recommendation, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee against interruptions. Test the stream and any failover plan, and monitor stream health during operation.

If FFmpeg exited, diagnose the exit and arrange a safe restart
Reconnect flags operate while FFmpeg is running and handling the relevant input. Once the process exits, a retry option cannot bring it back. Inspect the final log lines and exit status to determine whether the cause was an input failure, output failure, processing error, or something outside FFmpeg such as the host stopping.
For a 24/7 service, an external process supervisor can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but that is a separate layer from FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect behavior. Choose a restart policy that avoids rapid repeated launches, and verify that it uses the intended command and current stream key. A restart may also create a new YouTube ingest session; check Live Control Room rather than assuming the stream resumed cleanly. No one restart policy fits every source, host, or YouTube setup.
Check music rights and long-event handling separately
A technically healthy FFmpeg process does not establish that the channel has rights to broadcast its music. YouTube checks live content for third-party matches, and a match can lead to interruption independently of an encoder or network fault. If the music is licensed, confirm whether the relevant rights holder has allowlisted the channel where needed. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. FFmpeg reconnect settings cannot clear a rights claim.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a single uninterrupted full archive for an event lasting longer than 12 hours. If complete retention matters for a continuous music stream, plan local recording and event handling separately; do not rely on a single long YouTube event to preserve the entire broadcast.
Common reconnection problems and fixes
- “Reconnect” flags have no effect on an RTSP or local-file input. The HTTP reconnect options are protocol-specific. Identify the input protocol first and use guidance for that protocol rather than applying HTTP options blindly.
- FFmpeg retries the HTTP input, but YouTube still reports no incoming stream. The output leg may be failing. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key, then use Live Control Room health messages and the FFmpeg output log to investigate ingest and outbound connectivity.
- The source stops at EOF and does not restart. If it is genuinely an endless HTTP source, consider
-reconnect_at_eof 1before that input. If it is a finite file, EOF may be normal; use a deliberate looping or playlist approach instead of treating every end as a network error. - Retries continue against a source that no longer works. Check whether the URL expired, was revoked, or now returns an HTTP error. Retry controls cannot repair an invalid source; renew or replace the URL and set bounded retry behavior appropriate to the failure.
- The stream drops when bandwidth is busy. Compare the outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity, leave the headroom YouTube recommends, and test while the network is under realistic load. A reconnect can restore a dropped connection but cannot create missing bandwidth.
- The stream is interrupted despite a healthy encoder. Check YouTube’s live-stream notices and copyright status. Resolve rights or allowlisting issues with the rights holder; do not treat a platform content interruption as an FFmpeg transport error.
- The process exits and never returns. Diagnose the exit from its log and status, then use a separately configured supervisor if automatic process restart is required. Input reconnect flags alone cannot restart it.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built from uploaded music videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not camera-based live broadcasting.
