Use print() when the next output should continue beside the current text; use println() when it should start after a line break.
How print() and println() differ
System.out is Java’s standard output stream, represented by a PrintStream. Its print methods write a value and leave the next output on the same line. Its println methods write the value and then terminate the line; calling println() with no argument writes only the line separator. The Java SE 26 API describes this as “Terminates the current line by writing the line separator string.” Oracle Java SE 26 PrintStream API.

System.out.print("Hello, ");
System.out.print("Java");
System.out.println("!");
System.out.println("Next line");
The first three calls place Hello, Java! on one line. The final call starts with Next line after the line break written by the preceding println("!").
Does println() always add n?
No. println() writes the platform’s line separator, defined by the line.separator system property. That separator is not necessarily one n character, so avoid assuming that every platform represents a line break identically. In formatted output, use %n when you need a platform-independent line break.
What values can these methods print?
PrintStream provides overloads for common primitive values, including booleans, characters, integers, and floating-point numbers, as well as char[], String, and Object. For an object, the method obtains its printable representation using String.valueOf(x). The Java Tutorials explain that these methods convert values for output, including values combined with text, but provide limited control over formatting. Oracle Java Tutorials: Formatting.
When to use printf() or format()
Use printf() or format() when you need numeric precision, aligned fields, locale-sensitive output, or several formatting instructions in one string. Oracle’s Java Tutorials document the two methods as equivalent and show specifiers such as %d, %f, %s, and %n. Oracle Java Tutorials: Formatting.

Where System.out sends output
System.out is standard output, typically connected to the display or to another destination selected by the host environment or user. Java also provides System.err as standard error, conventionally used for error messages or information that should remain visible when standard output is redirected. In a larger application, follow its logging and output design rather than treating console printing as a replacement for structured logging.
Flushing and write errors
Automatic flushing is a configuration option for a PrintStream, not a guarantee that every call to println() immediately flushes output. The API specifies that when automatic flushing is enabled, flushing occurs after certain operations, including a println call or a newline write. Oracle Java SE 26 PrintStream API.
PrintStream also does not throw IOException for write failures. It records an internal error state that can be checked with checkError(), a detail that can matter when the stream writes somewhere other than the default console. Oracle Java SE 26 PrintStream API.
