A customer-support AI agent can recognize returning customers by retrieving a small, verified set of useful facts from earlier sessions—not by relying on the model to remember, or by pasting every old transcript into its prompt. Keep session history and durable customer memory separate, scope both to the right person and case, and let customers inspect or remove stored information.
What should a support agent remember?
Remember details that help resolve a future support request, and retain only what is useful for that purpose. Depending on the case, that may include an unresolved issue, troubleshooting already attempted, a confirmed resolution, a ticket number, a contact preference, or the next step in a return or dispute. These are examples, not a checklist of data every support system should collect.

A useful distinction is between session history and durable memory. Session history preserves the sequence of messages and actions in one interaction. Durable memory is a smaller set of facts or preferences intended to help in later sessions. Amazon Bedrock documentation describes this distinction as short-term event history and long-term records extracted from interactions. Neither is the same as giving a model permanent memory by default.
Keep the original interaction or case record as the source of truth. A memory entry should point back to the event that supports it, and should not silently replace the authoritative ticket, account, or order record.

How should the memory system work?
- Identify the customer and scope. Authenticate or otherwise resolve the incoming request to the appropriate customer or account before looking up memory. Define whether information belongs to an individual, an organization, a support case, or another scope. Apply that boundary in the data query itself; semantic similarity is not an identity check.
- Record session events. Store messages and structured case updates against a session and the appropriate customer or account identifier. Include useful operational context, such as the issue reported, steps already tried, and any temporary workaround. Preserve timestamps and links to the underlying case or conversation.
- Extract a small set of durable facts. After an interaction or meaningful case update, create or update only facts likely to help with future support. For example: “replacement shipment is pending” is more actionable than a broad summary of an entire conversation. Retain the supporting interaction reference and when the fact was last verified.
- Retrieve for the current task. When a customer returns, first fetch information using the verified identity and allowed scope. Then retrieve facts or events relevant to the current issue, rather than supplying the entire history. Include enough context to avoid repeating failed troubleshooting or to continue an open process.
- Present memory as evidence, not authority. Make clear to the agent what is stored, where it came from, and how recent it is. The agent should confirm uncertain or consequential details with the customer or authoritative system before acting.
- Apply lifecycle rules. Set retention, expiry, deletion, and purge behavior for memory records and supporting data. Define what happens to backups and audit records under your own policies rather than assuming that a product control handles every copy.
What belongs in a memory record?
A structured record makes it easier to assess relevance, freshness, and provenance than a single free-form summary. A minimal conceptual record might contain:
- Scope: the customer or account identifier and, where relevant, the case identifier.
- Fact: a concise statement, such as an unresolved issue or a stated contact preference.
- Provenance: the session, message, or verified business record supporting the fact.
- Timing: when it was observed and when it was last confirmed.
- Status: whether it is current, resolved, superseded, or awaiting confirmation.
- Lifecycle: a review or expiry rule appropriate to the type of fact.
Prefer explicit status over wording that can become misleading with age. “Customer reported intermittent login failures on May 4; unresolved at session end” is more useful than “customer has login problems.” A later verified resolution should update or supersede the old state, while keeping its history available according to your retention policy.
How do you keep retrieval relevant and safe?
Enforce scope before searching
Filter by verified customer or tenant identity before ranking records for relevance. If a support agent can access multiple accounts, apply authorization checks to each retrieval. Do not let a vector search across all customers decide whose information the agent may see.

Retrieve only what the current issue needs
Use the current request and case state to select a small number of relevant memories. Include recent unresolved events when the customer is continuing an issue, but do not assume that an old preference or condition is still current. If the retrieved facts conflict, show their dates and sources and ask for confirmation instead of choosing one silently.
Separate customer content from instructions
Stored messages can contain inaccurate claims, malicious instructions, or text that was never intended to govern the support agent. Treat memory as untrusted data: it may inform the answer, but it must not override system instructions, authorization rules, or support policy. Validate extracted facts against trusted records where possible, and do not store customer-written instructions as privileged agent directives.
Make summaries auditable
Summarization can introduce details that were never said. Keep a link to the supporting source, test extraction against the original interaction, and give the agent a way to distinguish customer-reported information from verified account or case data. Avoid presenting an inferred summary as a confirmed fact.

What controls should customers have?
Where the product and channel support it, give customers a way to see what the agent remembers, correct inaccurate information, delete selected memories, and turn memory use off. Microsoft’s Foundry guidance recommends transparency and editability; Salesforce documents conversational viewing, deletion, and memory-preference controls when its User Memory Management subagent is added.

Salesforce documentation says disabling Agent Memory stops the agent from using existing memories but retains them. Its documented behavior also has a per-user limit of 50 memories, after which the oldest memory is automatically removed. These are Salesforce-specific product details, not general design rules; verify current behavior and licensing for the intended deployment.
Define what a control means across the whole system. If a customer deletes a memory, decide whether the source conversation or required case record remains under a separate retention policy, and describe that distinction clearly. Similarly, specify how expiry jobs, backups, and audit logs behave rather than promising that one interface action purges every stored copy.

Which managed memory options fit a support deployment?
These products document different capabilities, and there is no universal best choice. Match the memory layer, customer identity model, controls, deployment environment, and availability to your support system. Product features and licensing can change, so confirm current documentation before committing.
| Option | Documented memory approach | Fit and important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Memory | AWS documents short-term interaction events and longer-term memories extracted from interactions, including retrieval of prior support context. | Consider when building in an AWS-oriented environment. Confirm current service details, deployment requirements, and how identity, retention, and customer controls will be implemented. |
| Cloudflare Agent Memory | Cloudflare documents persistent, scoped profiles and namespaces, automatic extraction, recall across executions, and deletion APIs. | The documentation available for this article labels the feature private beta and was last updated June 2, 2026. Do not assume general availability; verify access and current status. |
| Salesforce Agent Memory | Salesforce documents memories stored separately for each user and support scenarios such as resuming a case or continuing a multi-step return or dispute. | Required editions and add-on licenses vary by agent type. Conversational memory management requires adding the User Memory Management subagent; confirm the relevant edition and controls. |
| Microsoft Foundry | Microsoft’s support example describes remembering a customer’s name, prior issues and resolutions, ticket numbers, and preferred contact method. | Use the example as a documented product concept, not evidence of a particular production result or comparative advantage. Assess how the reference architecture maps to your system’s identity and lifecycle needs. |
The comparison is about documented capabilities, not measured resolution rates or customer satisfaction. The cited product materials do not establish a directly attributable outcome statistic for support agents with persistent memory.

Test the failure cases as carefully as the happy path. Use synthetic or appropriately controlled test data, and check that the system behaves correctly at each point where information is written, retrieved, updated, or removed.
- Returning customer: confirm that relevant prior steps appear and unrelated memories do not.
- Wrong identity or tenant: verify that a similar name, shared device, or semantically similar issue cannot expose another customer’s records.
- Stale information: check that an old address, preference, or unresolved status is dated and confirmed before use when it matters.
- Conflicting evidence: ensure that a later verified case update supersedes an older summary without erasing useful provenance.
- Malicious or false content: confirm that stored text cannot override policy, trigger unauthorized actions, or become trusted merely because it was retrieved.
- Customer control: test viewing, correction, disabling, deletion, expiry, and the documented behavior of backups or audit data.
- Extraction quality: compare generated memories with source conversations to detect invented details or missing qualifications.
Evaluate the system on whether it retrieves the right context, avoids leakage, preserves provenance, and handles corrections and deletion as intended. Do not promise a specific increase in satisfaction, resolution, or cost savings without results measured in the deployment where the agent will be used.
What depends on the deployment?
Memory features supplied by a platform do not by themselves settle lawful basis, retention obligations, or deletion requirements. Those depend on the deployment and jurisdiction. Set policies with the appropriate privacy and compliance owners, and make the product’s customer-facing controls match the actual data lifecycle.
