For a Java full-stack interview that includes Spring Boot, REST APIs, and relational persistence, prepare to explain how a request moves through a working application—not just define framework terms. Review Java fundamentals, Spring dependency wiring and configuration, API design and security, JPA/Hibernate mappings and fetch behavior, and how you would test each layer. The emphasis varies by employer, seniority, and project, so use this as a practical review map rather than a guaranteed question list.
What should you review for a Java full-stack interview?
Start with the concepts that let you reason across the stack. A strong answer usually names the concept, explains when it is useful, identifies a tradeoff, and connects it to a concrete example from a project or a small design exercise.
- Refresh Java collections, exceptions, object-oriented design, and concurrency basics.
- Trace a request through a Spring Boot application and explain configuration and dependency wiring.
- Design a REST endpoint with validation, a success response, a failure response, and access control.
- Follow the endpoint’s data path through the repository, JPA, Hibernate, and a relational database.
- Choose tests that demonstrate isolated logic, request behavior, application wiring, or persistence behavior.
- Rehearse a project story that includes a technical decision, its tradeoff, a bug or performance issue, and how you verified the result.
Documentation is a useful versioned reference, not evidence of which questions a particular employer asks. Oracle’s JDK 25 documentation and Core Libraries, Release 25 cover the language and libraries; use the Java version relevant to the role when preparing.
Which Java fundamentals are worth refreshing?
Be ready to discuss object-oriented design, interfaces and composition, generics, exceptions, collections, streams, immutability, and basic concurrency. Focus on behavior and tradeoffs rather than reciting API names.

Compare collections by the job they do
Oracle describes the collections framework as a unified architecture of interfaces, implementations, and algorithms. When asked to choose a collection, explain the requirements that shape the choice:
- Does the application need ordering, and what kind?
- Are duplicates allowed?
- Which operations are common: lookup, insertion, removal, or iteration?
- Is access shared across threads, and what coordination does that require?
There is no universally best collection; describe the relevant access patterns and constraints before choosing one. Oracle’s Collections Framework overview is a useful reference.
Explain concurrency in terms of safety
Prepare to explain what state is shared, how concurrent access is coordinated, and what can go wrong without that coordination. Relate the answer to a real need—such as protecting mutable state or avoiding unsafe assumptions about simultaneous work—instead of treating thread-safety as a property to add indiscriminately.
How do Spring Boot and Spring Data JPA fit together?
Spring Boot provides application structure and production-oriented conveniences. Its official overview describes standalone, production-grade Spring applications and features such as externalized configuration, security, metrics, and health checks. In an interview, explain how the application you built uses configuration and dependency wiring, rather than claiming that Boot removes the need to understand the underlying components.
Be clear about application boundaries
Be able to trace a request through the controller, service, and repository responsibilities. Explain where request handling ends, where business behavior belongs, and where persistence access is performed. Discuss dependency injection and configuration at the level of how your application’s components are assembled.
For configuration questions, describe how the application gets its settings and how you keep environment-specific values outside business logic. The exact configuration mechanism and profile conventions should match the Spring Boot version and project you are discussing.
Do not treat JPA, Hibernate, and Spring Data as synonyms
Spring Boot’s SQL Databases reference distinguishes their roles: JPA is an object-relational mapping technology, Spring Data supplies repository functionality, and Hibernate is a widely used JPA implementation. Spring Boot’s JPA starter brings together Hibernate, Spring Data JPA, and Spring ORM.
Spring Data can provide repository implementations from interfaces and method conventions. Explain when that abstraction suits common persistence needs and when a more explicit query or direct SQL access may be a better fit. The choice depends on query complexity and how much control the application needs; Spring also supports JDBC as well as ORM.

What REST API topics should you prepare to explain?
Practice walking through one endpoint end to end: a route receives a request, input is validated, business behavior runs, and the application maps the outcome to a response. A clear explanation should cover resource-oriented routes, request and response DTOs, pagination where relevant, consistent error handling, and how clients can evolve alongside the API.
- Show what valid input looks like and how invalid input is handled.
- Explain what the client receives on success and on failure.
- Describe how error responses remain useful to clients without exposing internal implementation details.
- Explain how authorization applies to the operation and its data.
- Consider idempotency and backward-compatible changes when they matter to the endpoint.
Keep protocol explanations precise: the project’s API contract should determine its method, status, and error behavior. Be prepared to explain the actual choices in the service you built rather than asserting that one design is right for every endpoint.
How should you discuss authentication and authorization?
Spring Security’s reference documentation covers authentication, authorization, and protection against common attacks, with support for imperative and reactive applications. Distinguish the two central questions: authentication establishes who a user is; authorization determines what that user may do.
In an interview, describe where the application enforces access rules and how they relate to the requested action or resource. Avoid presenting one authentication mechanism as universally best: the choice depends on the application’s requirements and environment.

What should you know about JPA and Hibernate?
Hibernate maps Java object models to relational data and provides query and retrieval facilities. The Hibernate ORM User Guide places it between the Java data-access layer and the relational database. Be ready to explain entity mappings, association ownership, cascade choices, transaction boundaries, and the entity’s lifecycle at a conceptual level.
Persistence contexts and units of work
Hibernate describes SessionFactory as a thread-safe, immutable factory and Session as a single-threaded, short-lived unit of work. The Jakarta Persistence counterparts are EntityManagerFactory and EntityManager. Understand the difference between transient, persistent, and detached entities, and explain how the persistence context and transaction scope relate to the operation you are discussing.
Fetching decisions affect database work
Fetching involves both when data is loaded and how it is retrieved. Be able to describe lazy and eager loading, recognize the symptoms of an N+1 query problem, and explain when a fetch join, entity graph, DTO, or projection might help. The appropriate choice depends on the data the use case actually needs and the number of database round trips it creates.
Do not assume annotations alone prove a query is efficient. Explain how you would verify the behavior using generated SQL and tests, while considering the amount of data transferred, the object graph required, and whether the persistence context remains available when data is accessed.

Which tests should you describe, and what do they prove?
Choose test scope according to the behavior being checked. A test of isolated business logic answers a different question from a test of HTTP handling or database mappings.
- Unit tests: check isolated logic without relying on full application wiring.
- Web-layer tests: check request and response behavior at the HTTP-facing layer.
- Integration tests: check that application components work together with the relevant configuration.
- Persistence tests: check entity mappings and repository behavior against the persistence setup.
Spring Boot documents general testing support and focused test modules. Its common test starter includes JUnit Jupiter and assertion and matcher libraries. The Testing Spring Boot Applications guide describes Data JPA tests that set up entities and repositories and roll back transactions by default at test completion. Check exact annotations and module behavior against the Spring Boot version used by the project.
How can you turn review topics into interview answers?
Use one feature from a project or a practice application to connect the topics. For example, explain how a client request enters a controller, how the service handles the business rule, how the repository loads or saves the data, and how the response and tests reflect the outcome.
For any technical decision, structure the explanation around the need, the choice, the tradeoff, and the verification. For example, if a page loaded more related data than expected, explain what behavior revealed the problem, how you examined the SQL, which fetching or projection approach you considered, and how a test checked the change. Keep the story specific to what you actually did; a clear account of constraints and verification is more credible than a claim that one pattern is always superior.
