Start with Windows Update. If it does not fix the sound problem, identify your laptop’s exact model and Windows version, then get the audio driver from the laptop maker’s official support page. A driver that works on one laptop model is not necessarily right for another.
Before downloading: identify your laptop and Windows version
Write down the laptop’s manufacturer and exact model, along with the Windows version it runs. The model-specific support page is the safest source for a matching driver; do not choose a download just because its name mentions Realtek, Intel, or another familiar audio-chip brand.

Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance. Choose a package for the Windows version actually installed and your specific laptop model.

Try Windows Update first
Microsoft recommends checking Windows Update for available audio-driver updates. Install any relevant update, then restart the laptop and test the sound.

Search for a driver in Device Manager

Open Device Manager.
-
Expand Sound, video and game controllers.

Right-click the audio device and choose Update driver.

Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts.

Restart Windows if a driver is installed, then check whether audio works.

If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, that does not rule out a newer or more suitable package from the laptop manufacturer.
Download the model-specific driver from the laptop maker

Search for the exact laptop model, rather than a similar model or a broad product family.

Open the drivers or downloads section and choose the audio driver listed for your Windows version.

Download and install it using the manufacturer’s instructions, then restart the laptop.
Package names, versions, supported Windows releases, and installation steps vary by model. If you are unsure which listing applies, check the model number again and use the manufacturer’s own instructions rather than a third-party driver download.

If updating does not restore sound
Uninstall the audio device and restart
Save your work first. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device under Sound, video and game controllers, choose the uninstall option, and confirm. Restart the laptop; Windows should prompt to reinstall an audio driver. This refresh may restore basic sound, but it does not by itself confirm that the latest model-specific driver is installed.
Try Windows’ generic audio driver
In Device Manager, open the audio device’s driver update flow and choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. If offered, select High Definition Audio Device and follow the prompts. This is a troubleshooting option, not a replacement for checking the laptop maker’s package when model-specific support is needed.
Roll back a driver after a recent update
If the sound stopped working after a driver change, open the audio device’s Properties in Device Manager, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Windows only offers rollback when a previous driver is present.

If Windows cannot see the audio device
A missing output device can be a detection issue, not just an outdated driver. In Device Manager, show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes. If the audio device appears, check whether it is disabled and enable it if appropriate. Then, if needed, install the driver for your exact laptop model and Windows version from the manufacturer’s official support page.
If sound stopped after a Windows update
Check for pending Windows updates and restart the laptop. You can also try updating or rolling back the audio driver using the steps above. Microsoft’s post-update troubleshooting additionally recommends restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services. Rollback is only available when Windows has a previous driver to return to.
Mac laptop running Windows through Boot Camp
Do not use the standard Windows laptop-maker route as your only option on a Mac running Windows through Boot Camp. Apple says Windows support software (drivers) may be needed after installing or upgrading Windows, and identifies non-working built-in speakers in Windows as a reason to install the latest support software. Follow Apple’s instructions for downloading and installing Windows support software on your Mac.
