Jagex removed the Dragon Slayer II trailer shown at RuneFest 2026 after viewers flagged a knight with six fingers and other apparent visual inconsistencies as possible signs of generative AI. The company apologized and said it was investigating. Jagex attributed the trailer to an unnamed external partner that had explicitly assured it generative AI would not be used; the partner’s production methods have not been independently established.
Why did Jagex pull the RuneScape trailer?
The trailer promoted RuneScape’s Dragon Slayer II quest and debuted at RuneFest 2026. Viewers pointed to a knight apparently shown with six fingers, along with other odd imagery, including footwear described in coverage as resembling modern sneakers. Those details prompted allegations that generative AI may have been involved, but visual anomalies alone do not prove how the trailer was made.

Jagex removed the video while it investigated. Alec “Mod Sween” Sween, a RuneScape community lead, addressed the issue in a Reddit statement, according to PC Gamer’s October 5, 2026 report. MMORPG.com also reported the removal and Jagex’s response.

What did Jagex say about the trailer’s production?
Jagex said an external partner produced the trailer and had explicitly confirmed that generative AI would not be used. The company has not named that partner in the available coverage, and the production process has not been independently confirmed.

What is Jagex’s generative-AI policy?
Jagex stated: “Our position is clear at Jagex: we don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf.” This is the company’s stated policy; it does not, by itself, establish what tools or methods were used to make this trailer.

What changes did Jagex announce?
Jagex said it should have caught the issues and could not simply shift responsibility to the external partner. It described this as its second recent generative-AI concern involving trusted partners, following a separate concern connected to its 100 Thieves clothing collaboration. The company said the incidents exposed a failure in its own review processes.
Jagex announced an overhaul of those processes and said it would work with and commission community creators to tell the Dragon Slayer II story to the standard expected for the update. The reported statements do not identify the partner, give the investigation’s conclusion, or set a date for a replacement trailer.
