What does the prototype look like?
CarExpert reported on July 27, 2026, that a heavily camouflaged Sportage prototype was testing in Europe. The outlet described proportions broadly similar to the current SUV, a more sharply raked windscreen, a tapering roofline and a glimpse of a larger central touchscreen. In a separate report dated September 4, 2026, CarExpert said a prototype had been spotted during hot-weather testing in Spain. It interpreted the vehicle as having a more upright, angular form, an apparent clamshell bonnet, a blunt front end and a tapering roofline. CarExpert’s July report anticipated a 2027 showroom arrival and referred to an Australian launch. That is the outlet’s expectation, not an announcement from Kia. The reports do not establish a confirmed reveal date, an official model-year designation or timing for other markets.

What the spy reports suggest
- Screen: CarExpert described a glimpse of a larger central touchscreen and assessed that it was “almost certain” to use Hyundai Motor Group’s Pleos Connect system. Kia has not confirmed the system for the Sportage prototype. CarExpert also reported the group’s target of deploying Pleos Connect across 20 million Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles by 2030; that rollout target is context, not proof of what is fitted to this vehicle. - Powertrain: CarExpert’s reports interpret a visible exhaust outlet or muffler as evidence that the photographed test vehicle has an internal-combustion engine. That does not identify its exact engine or establish the final range.

What Kia has confirmed about production models
Kia America’s official announcement concerns the US-market 2027 gas-powered Sportage, not the camouflaged next-generation prototype. Kia says most of that production range carries over. For 2027, the X-Line adds a standard panoramic sunroof and Smart Power Liftgate, and a new Road Rider Brown exterior color is offered. The announced starting price is $28,990 MSRP before a $1,495 destination charge; Kia says retailer prices can vary. These are US-market production-model details, not prototype pricing or equipment. Should you buy the current Sportage or wait?
The decision depends on whether you need a vehicle on a known schedule or are willing to wait for a vehicle whose details remain unknown. The announced US 2027 gas model has published pricing and equipment information; the prototype does not yet have a confirmed launch date, price, final design, powertrain availability or regional lineup.
