The company has not said it is canceling Reignited, and its apology did not finalize replacement rules.
The original proposal was for a fresh-start character type—not a wipe of existing Veteran accounts. Its separate progression and economy were meant to offer newcomers and returning players a shared starting point, but players raised concerns about veteran progress, community division, interaction limits, and membership.

What is RuneScape Reignited?
Reignited was announced as a new permanent character type in RuneScape, the game also commonly called RS3. It is not Old School RuneScape, which is a separate game. Under Jagex’s October 3, 2026 proposal, Reignited characters would begin with fresh progression, separate hiscores, and their own economy. Existing players could keep playing as Veterans or create a separate Reignited character; the announcement did not propose erasing Veteran accounts. Jagex’s original announcement framed the new start as a way to help newcomers and returning players experience the game without the advantages and maturity of its long-running economy.
RuneScape creative director Ryan Philpott described Reignited as an “opportunity to relaunch RuneScape” in an interview at RuneFest 2026. He said: “We believe – going as far as to say we know – this is the right time to relaunch RuneScape in this way [and] show everyone how great a game RuneScape is again, after ripping out some of those egregious features.” PC Gamer’s interview coverage provides that context.

What did Jagex apologize for?
In its community post, “Reignited: Where We Go From Here,” Jagex wrote: “Let’s not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That’s entirely on us and of our own making, and it’s only right we open by saying sorry.” The post said the company was re-evaluating Reignited and exploring a “heavy set of revisions” in response to feedback. Jagex also acknowledged: “We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea. Not just in the execution, but how we revere your accomplishments, champion your legacy and ensure you benefit from every player who comes through the door.” The official update said every option remained on the table and promised to put proposals before players by the end of that week.
Jagex said it had heard concerns that Veterans could become less important, that Veteran worlds might lose population, and that a smaller community could become fragmented. It also cited worries that Veterans might feel “tainted,” that interaction restrictions would be frustrating, that Veteran-locked items and cosmetics could feel cut off, that players might feel pressured to restart, and that a separate character subscription would be unwelcome. These are concerns reported by Jagex, not established outcomes.
How did the original proposal treat Veteran and Reignited characters?
The following describes the October 3 proposal, not confirmed final rules. Jagex’s subsequent apology put key parts of the plan under review.
| Feature | Veteran characters | Reignited characters | Original cross-type rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Progression and hiscores | Existing character progression and Veteran hiscores | Fresh progression and separate Reignited hiscores | Separate character types |
| Economy | Mature Veteran economy | Fresh Reignited economy | Separate economies; cross-type trading was not allowed |
| Worlds | Could use shared RuneScape worlds | Could use shared worlds, with additional Reignited-only worlds | Worlds could be shared, but some worlds were proposed for Reignited only |
| Social play | Could chat and join clans or homesteads with Reignited characters | Could chat and join clans or homesteads with Veterans | Social features were allowed across character types |
| Grand Exchange | Could not access a Reignited character’s Grand Exchange | Could not access a Veteran character’s Grand Exchange | Cross-type access was not allowed |
| Boss instances | Veteran instances | Reignited instances | Characters could not share the same boss instances across types |
| Membership | Existing membership arrangements | The original plan included free members’ access for the first ten days | Jagex was reviewing the separate-membership requirement; revised terms were not stated in the apology |
The original announcement said Reignited would launch on December 2, 2026, alongside the Adventure Guide and the next step in remastering the early journey. Because Jagex subsequently said it was re-evaluating the design, that date and the listed mechanics should be understood as announced plans, not settled launch details.

Will Reignited split the RuneScape player base?
That is a concern raised by players, not a measured or confirmed result. The original design tried to combine shared worlds and social features with separate progression, economies, trading, and boss instances. That mix could let Veterans and Reignited characters meet socially while still keeping much of their play and commerce apart. Jagex said it was considering ways to prevent a lasting hard split between communities, but its apology did not specify the changes it would make.
Does Reignited reset existing RuneScape accounts?
No account wipe was announced. Reignited was proposed as a fresh-start character type alongside existing Veteran characters, not as a reset of Veteran progress. Jagex said it was considering how Veteran progress could remain intact and be represented, but had not published finalized revisions in the apology.

Do I need a separate membership for Reignited?
The original proposal raised a separate-membership requirement, which Jagex said it was considering changing. The announcement also offered Reignited characters free members’ access for their first ten days. The apology did not confirm the final membership model or say whether that introductory offer would remain.
Did Jagex cancel Reignited?
No. The cited update says Jagex is re-evaluating the proposal and preparing revisions; it does not announce cancellation. The post promised player-facing proposals by the end of the week, so the status may change as Jagex publishes further updates.
