What Google’s Jacquard shutdown in April means
When a smart-fabric platform shuts down, the app and cloud services are typically the first to go. For Jacquard specifically, Google’s announcement pointed to disabling the Jacquard app experience and the backend functions that make the system “smart” beyond simple local behavior.

- In-app account authentication (logins that require Google services)
- Pattern storage, syncing, and server-side actions (anything that depends on cloud upload/download)
- Remote or background features that require server responses
- Any “paired” experiences that require continuous app-to-cloud communication
If a feature previously depended on “sending commands” through Google’s infrastructure, you should assume it will no longer behave the same way after April.
What will likely keep working
Some things may continue to function even after app shutdown, depending on the garment’s design:
- Basic onboard behavior that’s already stored on the fabric controller (for example, sequences or gestures that don’t require a live cloud check)
- Battery-powered operation if the device doesn’t require server handshake just to respond locally
- Local connectivity tasks (pairing and communication) if the app can still reach the device and doesn’t require a server token
Because details vary by product generation and firmware, treat “will keep working” as “may keep working” and verify on your exact setup.
Check your setup (so you know what you’ll lose)
Before April arrives, spend 10–15 minutes inventorying your devices. The goal is to learn what relies on the Jacquard app vs. what’s likely stored on your garment.
Confirm your hardware and app status
On your phone:
- Check whether the Jacquard app is installed on iPhone (iOS) or an Android device.
- Open the app and note any version shown in Settings or About.
- Record the garment/controller name shown during pairing (often visible on-screen during setup).
- Confirm the app can still connect to your device right now (even if features look limited).
If the app already shows authentication failures before April, prioritize export/record steps immediately.
Identify which features depend on the app
Use a simple test to categorize features:
- Works after you disconnect → likely stored locally or executed onboard.
- Works only inside the app → likely depends on app services, server sync, or a cloud command flow.
- Needs account login to even view settings → likely server-dependent.
This matters because you don’t want to assume you’ll be able to recreate everything later.
What to do before the Jacquard app is turned off
Think of this as “data preservation for a smart accessory.” Even if Google later provides no export path, you can still capture your configuration by recording it.
1) Capture your patterns, settings, and learned gestures
Go through every setup you care about while the app still functions:

- Open each stored pattern or mode (if your app shows a list).
- Record what each pattern does in everyday language (for example: “Tap once = notify me / gesture triggers action”).
- Take screenshots of the pattern screen(s), including any names, timings, and mapping info.
If the app supports saving custom profiles, make sure each profile is fully visible and unchanged at the end of your session.
2) Export or record anything you can’t recreate easily
Not every app shutdown includes a user-friendly export tool. So assume you’ll need “manual export”:
- Take multiple screenshots per configuration page (some pages hide advanced parameters behind tabs).
- Write down critical numeric parameters, such as sensitivity levels, timing values, or trigger thresholds—whatever the app exposes.
- If you’ve ever updated firmware through the app, note the dates when updates succeeded (you’ll recognize them later if logs are shown).
For physical wearables, “good enough documentation” beats “I’ll remember later.”

3) Make sure your phone can still connect locally
Even if cloud functions are going away, you may still be able to use local behavior after April. To maximize that chance, do a last successful connection:
- Pair the garment/controller again (or verify it’s paired) in the Jacquard app.
- Confirm the device is reachable on the same phone you use daily.
- Test the gesture/trigger you’ll care about most.
If pairing fails now, it’s usually harder to diagnose later. Fix it while the system is still live.
4) Document firmware and device details
Use the app’s device details screen (if available) to capture:
- Firmware version/build number
- Battery level at last test
- Device/serial identifiers displayed in About or Diagnostics
That information helps if you need support or if you later repurpose the textile controller for a DIY project.

If the app won’t open or authenticate
Common symptoms:
- Login fails even with correct credentials
- App shows a connectivity/service error
- Everything loads blank or loops on an account screen
Try this sequence:
- Confirm your phone’s date/time is correct (automatic time on iOS/Android).
- Update the Jacquard app if the store still offers updates after shutdown (some apps receive “end-of-life” updates).
- Reboot the phone and retry pairing.
- If the error persists, stop troubleshooting authentication and focus on local/offline device behavior (if supported).
Once cloud auth is removed, no amount of reinstalling will restore server-based features.
If pairing fails but hardware still powers on
Symptoms:
- The app can’t detect the controller via Bluetooth
- You can see a device name, but pairing never completes
Try:
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on in settings.
- Remove the device from Bluetooth paired devices list, then re-pair.
- Test with the garment/controller near the phone (within 1–2 meters).
- Ensure the phone isn’t connected to too many Bluetooth devices (multi-device interference is real).
- Charge the garment/controller if battery is low.
If the app itself is dead but the controller still responds, you may still be able to use limited onboard functions. That depends on the device design.
If your device shows errors or stops responding
Common causes after shutdown include power issues or firmware states that only the app used to “complete.”
- Charge fully, then test the trigger/gesture again.
- Clear and re-pair if the app still has any local pairing workflow.
- If the controller supports physical reset buttons/steps, follow the hardware instructions you saved earlier (screenshots help here).
If nothing responds, you may be looking at a hardware fault—not just a service shutdown.

After an app shutdown, the value of the garment depends on whether it has onboard intelligence. If it doesn’t, you’ll need a different path.
Use basic device functions without the app (where supported)
Some smart wearables can do limited, preconfigured actions. If you’ve already configured gestures/patterns before April, test the garment right away after shutdown:
- Try the exact triggers you used before (gestures, taps, button presses).
- Verify what still happens when the app is closed.
- If the action is timed or sequential, confirm whether it completes without the phone.
When it works, it’s the closest outcome to “it still feels smart.”

- EASY CARE - The wrinkle-resistant fabric blend is machine washable and tumble dry friendly, ensuring your jacket stays clean and fresh with minimal effort, even on the busiest days.
Practical approach:
- Identify the controller’s interface (often Bluetooth or a documented module).
- Use a development workflow to test basic signals locally.
- Keep expectations realistic: not every shutdown-friendly device becomes hobby-friendly.
Even if you can’t reproduce Google’s original app experience, you may be able to trigger LEDs, buzzers, or other outputs.
Move to other wearables ecosystems
If your goal is notification, automation, or gesture control, you might get a better long-term match with established wearable platforms:
- Smartwatch notifications (iPhone + Apple Watch, or Android + Wear OS)
- App-automation using Shortcuts (iOS) or automation tools on Android
- Standalone smart rings/bracelets that don’t require a niche service to function
That won’t recreate “conductive smart fabric,” but it can preserve the everyday usefulness you bought the system for.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until after April to document patterns and settings. Once authentication breaks, the app may no longer show configuration screens.
- Assuming reinstalling fixes shutdown issues. Most shutdowns are server-side; the app can’t authenticate even if the APK/App Store install works.
- Only saving one screenshot per profile. Many apps hide parameters behind scrollable sections or tabs.
- Testing only when the phone is near. If the action requires stable local radio behavior, test at normal use distance too.
Jacquard app shutdown: FAQs
When exactly does the Jacquard app stop working?
Google’s announcement set the discontinuation for April. The exact day can vary by region and rollout, but you should treat April as a hard functional cutoff for app/cloud features and plan to finish preservation work before then.
Will my Jacquard garment still respond to gestures after April?
Possibly. If your garment’s controller stores preconfigured behavior onboard, some triggers may still work without the app. Verify by testing the garment without the phone right after the app/service changes begin.
Can I transfer my patterns to another phone or service?
If the app can’t authenticate or sync after shutdown, pattern transfer may be impossible. That’s why screenshots, written parameters, and any saved local exports (if available) are your best option before April.
Will updates to iOS or Android affect the shutdown?
They can affect app compatibility (for example, Bluetooth permissions). However, server shutdown generally dominates the outcome. Even on a stable OS, you should expect cloud-dependent features to fail.

Is there a refund option?
Refund policy depends on where you bought the product and Google’s and the retailer’s post-shutdown policies. If you want a refund, check the retailer return window first and then any brand-specific end-of-life program announcements.
Bottom Line
Google’s Jacquard smart fabric app shutdown in April is a classic “smart accessory lifecycle” moment: the app and server features will end, and you’ll only keep what your garment can do locally after the cutoff. Treat April as the deadline to preserve settings and test what still works without the app.
If your goal is continued smart behavior, decide early whether you’ll rely on onboard functionality, repurpose the hardware for a DIY build, or switch to a different wearable ecosystem that doesn’t depend on a single cloud service.
