The Baldur’s Gate 3 quest commonly referred to by players as Find Imposter is one of the more detective-style moments in Act 3. Your job is to spot the wrongdoer—an imposter (doppelganger) masquerading as someone else—before the scheme locks you into the wrong fight.
Because the disguise mechanics are subtle, this guide focuses on practical detection: how to force the right dialogue, which checks matter, and which spells reliably expose the doppelganger.

What Imposter and Doppelganger Mean in Baldur’s Gate 3
In BG3, a doppelganger is a shapeshifting enemy that uses a disguise to pass as someone else. In the Find Imposter scenario, the “imposter” is the disguised target you’re meant to identify and unmask.

Your success depends on two things: you choosing the correct suspect path and you using the right detection tool (dialogue options, hard checks, or exposure spells).

When You’ll Get the Quest (Act 3 Context)
This storyline plays out in Act 3. The game pushes you into a set of investigative conversations where multiple people may appear involved, but only one is actually the doppelganger behind the scheme.
Because Act 3 contains multiple parallel quests, always start by reading your journal objective and using the map marker to confirm you’re on the correct “imposter” task rather than another investigation.
Prerequisites That Make Finding the Doppelganger Reliable
You don’t need a perfect min-max build, but a few practical resources dramatically increase your odds—especially if you’re trying to avoid repeated reloads.
Recommended party tools
- A character with strong Wisdom (for Insight) and/or proficiency in Investigation.
- Detect Thoughts available on at least one caster (or a scroll).
- True Seeing available (spell or scroll) if you want the most reliable unmasking method.
- High Perception/Insight gear if you’ve got it (rings, cloaks, or temporary buffs).
Practical preparation
- Make sure you have at least one spare spell slot on your primary detector right before you start questioning.
- Check consumables: scrolls for Detect Thoughts / True Seeing and any party buffs you rely on.
- Use an autosave + manual quicksave before trying a different suspect. BG3’s investigation logic can branch.
Fastest Ways to Discover the Imposter
There are five broad approaches. The best results usually come from combining one “soft” method (dialogue/Insight) with one “hard” method (Detect Thoughts or True Seeing).
1) Force the Right Dialogue Options
Many imposter encounters are structured so that certain responses trigger deeper interrogation or suspicion checks. Don’t stick to generic lines—choose the option that explicitly presses for inconsistency.
If your dialogue doesn’t progress, exit the conversation, reposition, then re-engage with the suspect. BG3 sometimes queues alternate branches only after reloading the conversation state.
2) Use Insight and Investigation Checks
For imposter identification, Insight is your “read the person” tool. Investigation helps when the game expects you to notice something off rather than just judge behavior.

Practical use: cast it on the suspect right before you enter a high-stakes conversation branch. If the target is the doppelganger, Detect Thoughts usually gives you the information you need to confirm and escalate.
4) Use True Seeing (Spell or Scroll)
True Seeing is the “stop guessing” option. When it’s available, it reduces the fog around disguises, letting you treat the imposter like a normal enemy rather than a mystery.
If you’re tired of failing checks, True Seeing can cut your iteration time down to a single confrontation attempt.
5) Apply Anti-Disguise Tactics in Combat
If your dialogue route doesn’t immediately expose the doppelganger, combat can still reveal what’s going on. Once you engage, doppelgangers often have telltale combat behavior that confirms their true identity.

Open your journal and confirm the current objective name and location pin. Act 3 has multiple “talk to X / investigate Y” tasks, so don’t rely on memory—re-check the marker before you test suspects.
Step 2: Identify Suspects and Run the Detection Loop
Pick one suspect and attempt a progression path rather than lightly checking everyone. Your goal is to trigger a confirmation moment (a hard check, a Detect Thoughts prompt, or a dialogue escalation).
- Approach the suspect and start dialogue.
- Choose the options that press for inconsistencies.
- When prompted for a check, use the character with the highest relevant stat (Insight/Investigation).
- If you have Detect Thoughts, cast it during the interrogation window.

Once confirmed, escalate fast. Keep a combat-ready character position and make sure your detector isn’t trapped in an awkward range disadvantage.
If the game transitions into a fight, commit to it—try not to “end the encounter” early with disengage actions unless you’re using a deliberate strategy for a particular boss phase.

Checks Failing at the Worst Time
If your Insight/Investigation checks fail, you can end up stuck in a lower-information dialogue loop. Reloading near the last autosave before the conversation attempt is usually faster than trying new lines forever.
Improve odds by swapping to the right character, drinking temporary buffs, or using inspiration if you have it.
Spells Not Available Because of Party Setup
Detect Thoughts and True Seeing are often the cleanest solutions, but they’re not always prepared by players. If you don’t have the spell, you can use scrolls—but you must have them.

Don’t assume you can cast them mid-conversation without considering spell slot economy.
Long Rests and Scene Changes
Act 3 investigation logic can shift when you long rest or move between areas. If your objective seems “stale,” reload to before the last big transition and reattempt the investigation loop.

If your investigation isn’t progressing, follow this order. It’s the quickest path to isolating the real issue.
Re-check the Journal Objective and Map Pin
Confirm you’re doing the correct quest stage. If the objective location doesn’t match your current area, your “imposter” attempt may be for a different storyline event.
Try a Different Caster or Different Ability Score
Many attempts fail due to the wrong character selected when the game asks you to roll. Switch to your best Insight/Investigation character, and don’t be afraid to make that swap mid-run.
Use Autosave Strategy Before Testing Suspects
Create a quicksave before you start interrogating a suspect. If you later find you chose the wrong branch, you can reload and move to the next target without losing 20–40 minutes.
Reset the Situation via Reload, Not Guess-and-Run
Once dialogue has moved the state forward, random wandering usually won’t fix it. Reload close to the last meaningful decision point, then try the decisive tool (Detect Thoughts or True Seeing) rather than only changing dialogue lines.
Alternatives: If You Don’t Want to Use Spell-Based Detection
You can still solve the imposter puzzle without Detect Thoughts or True Seeing, but you’ll rely more heavily on social checks and careful escalation.

Dialogue-first method
Press on inconsistencies and force Insight/Investigation prompts. If the game is configured correctly, your dialogue escalation should eventually compel the imposter to reveal themselves (or move the objective forward).
Combat-first method
If you’re confident about your suspect selection, you can skip some verification and move straight to confrontation. This is riskier if you misidentify the target, but it avoids repeated dialogue loops.

Do I need to use Detect Thoughts to find the imposter?
No, but it’s one of the fastest confirmation tools. If your checks keep failing, Detect Thoughts or True Seeing usually reduces the number of reloads dramatically.

Reload if the encounter feels wrong or the quest objective doesn’t advance. BG3 can punish you socially in ways that don’t always clearly show up until later.
Why do my Insight checks fail even when my character is strong?
Check your build state at the moment of the dialogue roll: temporary debuffs, party member positioning, and whether you’re rolling with the character you think you are. Also verify you’re actually on the imposter quest objective and not a similar Act 3 investigation.
Can I solve it without long rests?
Yes. Most players can complete the identification and confrontation loop by carefully preparing spells/scrolls and using quicksaves before testing suspects.
Will the quest still work if I switch party members?
Switching party members is often beneficial because it lets you apply the best Insight/Investigation or the best prepared caster. Just make sure you still have your decisive spell option available when you reach the confirmation moment.
