When people say, It’s not just you, internet services went down due to Amazon outage, they’re usually reacting to a pattern: lots of websites, apps, and media services fail at the same time—often across different ISPs. That’s a classic sign of a dependency outage, not a single neighborhood line cut.
Amazon runs major infrastructure through AWS and related services like cloud computing, managed DNS, and content delivery. If one of those dependencies hiccups, it can cause failures that look identical to an ISP outage on your home connection.

DNS, CDNs, and dependency chains
Many popular services use Amazon-backed components. Examples include authoritative DNS, load balancing, content delivery, and storage. If those components degrade, requests can stall, return errors, or fail health checks—leading to widespread complaints.
- DNS resolution failures: domains don’t map to the correct IP, so pages don’t load.
- CDN delivery problems: the content delivery layer can’t fetch or serve assets, so pages hang on images, scripts, or video segments.
- Auth and APIs: login endpoints or backend APIs may stop responding, so apps show “can’t connect,” “server error,” or infinite spinners.
Why it feels like your ISP is down
Your internet connection is usually fine. What breaks is the path to specific services, which can look identical to an ISP outage because the browser can’t reach the destination.
Even worse, local DNS caching (often with 300-second default TTLs) can make the issue appear inconsistent: some domains fail while others keep working for a few minutes.

How to confirm it’s an Amazon outage (fast checks)
Before you reboot everything, confirm the outage signal. The goal is to identify whether the problem is service-side (Amazon/AWS) or local-side (your router, DNS, or device).
Check AWS Service Health and Status
Start with the most authoritative source: AWS Status. Look for region- and service-specific disruptions (for example, EC2, S3, CloudFront, Route 53, or API Gateway).
If you’re seeing widespread failures across many unrelated websites and apps, check the status page first—even if you’re not sure which AWS service is involved.
Check CDN/streaming providers and third-party monitors
Many user-facing services run on top of AWS. If AWS is degraded, downstream providers may also show incidents. Useful sources include service-specific status pages (for the app you’re trying to use) and independent monitors.
Recommended Free Tools
Try searching for the exact error message you’re seeing (for example, 5xx errors, DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN, or buffering patterns) and compare timestamps with AWS status.

Run quick local tests (browser, DNS, traceroute)
These tests tell you whether you have general connectivity or a failure reaching specific endpoints.
- Browser test: open 2–3 unrelated sites (not all on the same provider). If everything fails, your network may be the issue.
- DNS test: if only certain domains fail, it often points to DNS resolution or cached records.
- Route test: traceroute can show if traffic stalls near an upstream boundary (useful for advanced troubleshooting).
What to do right now: troubleshooting checklist
Use this sequence. It’s designed to quickly isolate service-side impact while still fixing common local causes.
1) Verify connectivity vs service reachability
Try loading a site that uses a different backend than your failing service (for example, a news site and a static page). If only specific apps fail, that strongly suggests an upstream dependency issue.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2) Fix DNS issues (flush and switch resolvers)
DNS problems are one of the fastest-to-fix causes that can appear during an outage window—or be triggered by it.
- Flush your DNS cache (instructions below per platform).
- Temporarily switch to reliable public DNS resolvers.
- Re-test the failing domain(s).
Common public DNS choices:
- Google Public DNS:
8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4 - Cloudflare DNS:
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1
3) Restart network gear correctly
Reboots help—but do them in the right order and give the network time to settle.
- Turn off or unplug your modem/router.
- Wait 30–60 seconds.
- Power on the modem first and wait for it to fully sync (often 2–5 minutes).
- Power on the router and wait for Wi‑Fi to stabilize.
- Re-test one failing app and one unrelated site.
4) Disable VPN/proxy and try a different browser session
If you use a VPN, it may route you through a failing egress point or rely on a DNS path that’s broken. Disable it temporarily and test again.
Also try an Incognito/private window to bypass cached sessions, cookies, and extensions that can mask the real connectivity failure.
5) Check device time, Wi‑Fi security, and captive portals
Certificates and token validation are time-sensitive. If your device clock is off by more than a few minutes, logins and API calls can fail in ways that look like a backend outage.

6) Test from another device or hotspot
This is the fastest way to confirm whether it’s local. If your phone on a cellular hotspot can reach the service while your home Wi‑Fi can’t, the issue is likely your router, DNS, or local routing—not Amazon.
Platform-specific steps
Follow the steps that match your primary device. Keep it simple: fix DNS, confirm time, and re-test the exact failing domain or app endpoint.
Windows
Clear DNS cache and re-test. If the issue persists, switch to public DNS in your network adapter settings.
- Press Win and type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt → Run as administrator.
- Run:
ipconfig /flushdns - Open Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → More network adapter options.
- Right-click your adapter → Properties → select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties.
- Choose Use the following DNS server addresses and enter
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1(or8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4). - Re-test the service.
macOS
Flush DNS using terminal commands, then switch DNS at the network level if needed.
- Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal).
- Run one of these (macOS versions differ):
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder - Go to System Settings → Network → select Wi‑Fi/Ethernet.
- Click Details → DNS.
- Remove current resolvers and add
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1. - Re-test the failing domain.
iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS)
Refresh the connection, clear DNS by toggling network, then re-test.
- Open Settings → Wi‑Fi.
- Tap the info (i) next to your network.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off, wait 10 seconds, then toggle back on.
- If DNS issues persist: in Settings → Wi‑Fi → Configure DNS, choose Manual.
- Add
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1. - Re-test the affected app or website.
Android (generic guidance)
Refresh Wi‑Fi, then update DNS server settings if your phone supports it.
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi‑Fi.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off, wait 10 seconds, then toggle on.
- Tap your network → Advanced or Private DNS.
- Set Private DNS to Automatic or configure a known resolver if available (some builds support hostname-based DoT).
- Re-test the failing service.
Smart TVs and streaming boxes
These devices often don’t expose detailed network tools. Focus on DNS, connectivity reset, and app restarts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Restart the streaming device (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on).
- Go to the device’s network settings → switch to DHCP (automatic) if you changed it recently.
- If your TV supports DNS entry, set
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1. - Close and reopen the affected streaming app.
- Try the same app on a phone to confirm whether it’s network-wide.
If it’s not the outage: distinguish local problems from AWS impact
Sometimes the outage is real, but your local network also has an issue (or you’re hitting a third-party service that’s independently failing).

Common local causes
- Bad DNS cache: stale records can cause intermittent failures.
- Router DNS forwarding bugs: custom firmware, ad-blockers, or filtering services can break resolution.
- IPv6 misconfiguration: some networks have broken IPv6 routes; forcing IPv4 can help.
- VPN DNS leaks: traffic flows through one resolver while connections use another.
Router and DNS routing gotchas
If your router advertises DNS to clients, changing DNS only on one device may not fix everything. For a quick test, compare results when you connect a phone to a hotspot. If hotspot works, suspect router-level DNS or firewall rules.
When services recover: what to wait for and what to re-test
Even after Amazon services stabilize, client caches can take time to refresh. That’s normal, not an additional outage.
DNS propagation and cache lifetimes
Many records use TTL values around 300 seconds (5 minutes), though it can vary by domain. Your browser, OS, router, and ISP DNS can each cache results—so failures may linger briefly.

- Rebooting only your device: if your DNS is broken at the router level, client-only changes may not persist.
- Assuming every failure is Amazon: outages can be coincidental across multiple providers.
- Overwriting DNS settings permanently: use public DNS temporarily, then revert to preferred resolvers once normal operation returns.
- Ignoring time drift: certificate and token failures can look like server outages.
Real-world symptoms by category
Outage symptoms vary depending on what part of the dependency chain is affected.
Websites load slowly or fail on specific domains
If only certain domains fail, DNS or CDN delivery is a likely culprit. Try flushing DNS and switching resolvers, then confirm with AWS status.
Video streaming buffers or won’t start
Streaming often uses CDNs. If the CDN can’t deliver segments, you’ll see repeated buffering or playback errors even with stable home internet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApps show login errors or can’t connect
API or authentication backend problems can trigger widespread failures. If the outage correlates with AWS incidents, you may not be able to fix it locally beyond DNS and network resets.

Game matchmaking fails, voice chat drops
Many games depend on backend services for matchmaking and session management. Even if the game loads, backend instability can cause lobby failures and voice timeouts.
FAQ
How can I tell if it’s Amazon/AWS versus my ISP?
Check AWS Status and compare the failures across unrelated services. Then test with a cellular hotspot. If hotspot works, your ISP/router is more likely to blame.
Will switching DNS always fix an Amazon outage?
No. If backend APIs are failing, DNS changes won’t help. DNS switching helps when the failure is resolution-related (stale records, broken forwarding, or cached bad answers).
Why do some websites work during the outage?
Because outages typically affect specific services, regions, or dependency paths. Different domains may route through different infrastructure or have cached content that still serves temporarily.
Should I contact my ISP if AWS is down?
If AWS status shows a broad issue and multiple services are failing, there’s often nothing your ISP can change. Still, rebooting modem/router and testing on a hotspot can help you confirm your specific line isn’t also affected.
How long can it take for things to come back?
Service recovery may happen in minutes, but your client caches (DNS, sessions, CDN caching) can make the problem linger for 5–15 minutes. Re-test after DNS cache clears and the app reconnects.
Bottom Line
Amazon outages can absolutely make it look like your internet is down, because many popular services depend on AWS components like DNS, CDNs, and backend APIs. The fastest way to reduce confusion is to verify with AWS status and then run targeted local tests.
If only specific domains or apps fail, focus on DNS cleanup, correct reboots, and disabling VPN/proxy. If failures span many unrelated services at the same time and match AWS incident reports, you’ll usually need to wait for the provider side to stabilize.
