In Zoom, computer recording saves a meeting to your computer, while cloud recording stores it in Zoom’s cloud for portal access. “ISO recording” is different: in production workflows such as ZoomISO, it means isolating participant feeds for separate production outputs. Cloud describes where a recording is stored; ISO describes how sources are separated and routed.
The terminology varies across platforms, so this comparison uses Zoom for its documented computer and cloud recording features, and ZoomISO as an example of an ISO production workflow. An ISO workflow is not simply another name for Zoom cloud recording.
What ISO recording and cloud recording mean
ISO recording: isolated sources for production
In production, “ISO” commonly refers to isolated sources or feeds. In the ZoomISO v3.0.1 workflow, individual participant feeds can be assigned to separate outputs. That can help a production team work with participant sources separately, rather than treating the meeting as one finished recording. ZoomISO’s documentation describes routing and capture modes; it is not a built-in Zoom cloud-recording setting. Read the ZoomISO v3 documentation.
Cloud recording: a hosted recording of the meeting
Zoom cloud recording saves meeting video, audio and chat text in Zoom’s cloud. Once processed, recordings can be viewed, managed, shared or downloaded through the Zoom web portal. A cloud recording is a hosted meeting recording, not automatically a set of isolated video files for each participant. Zoom’s overview of computer and cloud recording explains the storage distinction.

How the options compare
| Question | Zoom computer (local) recording | Zoom cloud recording | ISO-style production workflow (ZoomISO example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where does it go? | To the recording computer’s hard disk. | To Zoom’s cloud, accessible through the web portal. | Participant feeds are routed to production outputs; this is not described as an ordinary cloud archive. |
| What is it for? | Keeping recording files directly on that computer. | Centralized access, browser playback, sharing or downloading after processing. | Working with isolated participant feeds in post-production or a live production. |
| What files or feeds can it provide? | Zoom lists MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text for standard recordings. | Depending on settings, selected video layouts, audio files and chat text. | Individual participant feeds can be assigned to separate outputs. |
| What is required? | Zoom says computer recording is available with all accounts, subject to settings and device support. | A licensed user on an eligible Pro, Business or Enterprise account, with cloud recording enabled. | Appropriate capture permissions and a workflow configured for the production tool. |
| Ask yourself | Do I want files saved directly on this computer? | Do I need eligible hosted recording and later portal access? | Do I need separate participant feeds for editing or production? |
These categories are not mutually exclusive in every setup: a production workflow may route isolated sources while a separate recording workflow stores a finished meeting or other files. Check what the specific platform and ISO tool actually capture and save.
Can Zoom cloud recording save separate tracks?
It can save some separate components when you select the relevant settings, but that does not make it equivalent to an isolated video recording for every participant. Zoom lets an account configure separate video layouts—for example, active speaker, gallery view and shared screen—and choose one audio file for all participants, a separate audio file for each participant, or both. These are configurable options, not guaranteed defaults. Zoom says it can provide separate participant audio files for up to 200 speakers; audio from phone participants is combined into one file. See Zoom’s cloud recording settings.

Choose cloud recording for portal access
Consider Zoom cloud recording when eligible account holders need the recording managed through Zoom’s portal, with options to view, share or download it after processing. Select the layouts and audio outputs you need before recording rather than assuming every component is included by default.
Use an ISO workflow when production needs isolated feeds
Investigate an ISO-capable production tool when editors or live operators need participant feeds routed separately. Confirm the tool’s capture modes, output format and permissions for your exact workflow. ZoomISO v3 documentation describes capture permission modes involving Zoom computer-recording permissions and notifications or live-stream permissions and notifications. It also states that its recording capture mode does not itself record the call inside Zoom. Make sure participants and operators understand which application is capturing what.
