ISO/IEC 27017:2026 is the current edition of a cloud-security standard that adds cloud-specific guidance and controls to ISO/IEC 27002. It is intended for cloud service providers and customers across public, private, and hybrid cloud environments. The phrase “ISO 27017 certification” can be misleading: ISO describes 27017 as guidance and controls, while its certification guidance concerns optional certification to ISO/IEC 27001. A claim of 27017 certification therefore deserves a close look at the certificate, scope, and assessment scheme.
What ISO/IEC 27017 covers
ISO/IEC 27017 focuses on information security in the provision and use of cloud services. It builds on ISO/IEC 27002, providing additional implementation guidance for relevant controls and controls aimed at cloud-specific risks. The standard helps providers and customers clarify responsibilities for information, infrastructure, and operations that may be divided between them. ISO’s description of ISO/IEC 27017:2026 says controls should be selected in light of risk assessment and applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, and cloud-specific requirements; it is not a universal checklist to apply identically in every environment.

Cloud deployment models
The standard covers public, private, and hybrid cloud deployments. Private-cloud use can involve internal departments playing roles analogous to customer and provider, so the controls may need to be adapted to those relationships and the parties’ capabilities.

What “ISO 27017 certification” means—and does not mean
ISO’s current description presents ISO/IEC 27017 as guidance and controls. Its certification guidance describes third-party certification to ISO/IEC 27001, the requirements standard for an information security management system (ISMS). An organization can implement ISO/IEC 27001 without seeking certification, or choose certification to provide assurance to customers and stakeholders.
#1 Best Overall
The sources cited here do not establish a universally recognized, standalone accredited ISO/IEC 27017 certification route. That does not by itself determine what a particular certificate or assessment represents: ask the issuer or scheme owner to explain the basis of the claim. Do not treat alignment with ISO/IEC 27017 guidance as equivalent to a certificate for ISO/IEC 27001.
How to check a certificate or vendor claim
- Read the actual certificate and identify the standard and edition it names.
- Check the scope: which services, locations, and organizational boundaries are covered?
- Ask whether the certificate is accredited, and by which accreditation body; verify that the body and certification activity are relevant.
- Ask which cloud responsibilities and controls the assessment addresses, and whether it relies on a separate scheme or assessment.
- Check the evidence date and validity, then confirm any claimed standalone 27017 accreditation with the relevant accreditation body and scheme owner.
ISO explains that an accredited conformity assessment body can add confidence because an accreditation body independently confirms the certification body’s competence. Accreditation is therefore a detail to verify, not a substitute for checking the certificate’s named standard and scope.

How ISO/IEC 27017 relates to ISO/IEC 27002 and ISO/IEC 27001
| Standard | Role | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 27002 | Information security controls framework underlying ISO/IEC 27017. | ISO/IEC 27017 adds cloud-specific implementation guidance and controls. |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | Requirements for an information security management system. | An organization may implement it without certification or seek third-party certification; check the certificate’s scope and accreditation. |
| ISO/IEC 27017 | Cloud-specific guidance and controls for cloud service provision and use. | Do not assume that a claim of 27017 alignment means an organization holds an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate or a standalone accredited 27017 certificate. |
For context, ISO’s 2022 survey reported more than 70,000 ISO/IEC 27001 certificates in 150 countries and all economic sectors. That figure is about ISO/IEC 27001, not ISO/IEC 27017.
Current edition and where to find it
ISO/IEC 27017:2026 is Edition 2, published on July 27, 2026. The 2015 edition was withdrawn on that date. The IEC catalog record for the 2026 edition lists 39 pages and paper and PDF/ePub formats. ISO’s catalog displayed CHF 196 when checked; catalog pricing can change, so confirm the current price and edition with the seller before buying. Search for “ISO/IEC 27017:2026 standard” and verify the edition rather than relying on an older 2015 copy. The IEC record for ISO/IEC 27017:2015 shows its withdrawal.

The cited ISO material describes ISO/IEC 27017 as guidance and controls, not a blanket legal requirement for every cloud customer or provider. Whether particular controls or evidence are necessary depends on the organization’s risk assessment and applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, and cloud-specific requirements. If a customer, regulator, or contract asks for “27017 certification,” clarify exactly what evidence is required: the standard and edition, covered services and sites, and the assessment or certification scheme.
